BTW, my wife takes total credit for Mr. Hershey's gridiron prowess. She had him in an English class last year, and says she lectured him on the fine points of both kicking and hurdling would-be tacklers. She wants extra pay as a part-time assistant football coach. Are you listening, Frank?

I like reading the box score and seeing 0 punts for 0 yards for the whole game.
The one that he did get off was pretty decent, but the running into the kicker penalty made it moot.
I love seeing this guy leap over players to get the extra yard, but please, we do not need to lose another player due to injury.

edit: Just saw the video in the highlights on OhioBobcats.com. He was in the air for an extra 5 yards, rather than just 1 or 2.

If you saw Miami's place kicker get injured, you know why that worried me. But wow, did Akron ever fall asleep on that snap. Nobody was even looking at Hershey!

"The Hurdle" was the Play of the Day without a doubt. That play was the end of all enthusiasm on the Akron sideline. You could hear the wind being sucked out of the entire team; similar to the giant sucking sound one hears near Oxford most of the time.

Only thing that could possibly make that play / pic sweeter would have been if that were Manley looking up from the ground...

I'm with Jughead though...I love the enthusiasm but that scared the crap out of me...

You see an injury risk, I see a playmaker.

5 keys to football.

1. Having a QB who plays on the kickoff unit.
2. Having a kicker who goes down the field for the tackle instead of hanging back.
3. Having a DT who doubles as a FB on the goal line.
4. Having a WR who played QB in HS to bring in for the Hail Mary.
5. Having a punter who can hurdle people, twice.

If you have all that, you've got a championship team.

Maybe my memory is faulty, but I think I remembered hearing something last Spring that Hershey has the green light to run any time he thinks he can get the first down. That's the whole point of the Rugby-style kicks - to spread the field and create opportunities.

I actually called this fake. I was sitting at about the 50yd, 30 rows up, told my old roommate, "I wouldn't be suprised if Frank fakes it here. The defense would never expect it."

Roommate says "no way, its too long of a conversion and their in their own territory."

Sure enough, 27yds, a leap, and first down later he's high-fiving me and asking how I knew that.

This was not a called play by Frank. It was a decision made by Hershey on the field as he sprinted to his right to make the kick and noticed a clear field in front of him. Frank said, as others have affirmed, that Hershey has the green light to make this kind of decision. I remember another, not so successful, decision of this sort by another kicker back in Grobe years. It was against the Evil Empire, and I believe (from memory) led to the go ahead TD by A&M. That, too, was not a called fake but a player decision because the PoisonNuts had left someone unguarded and it looked like enough space for the conversion but it failed. I like coaches who give trusted players this kind of decision making power -- even when the result is failure. I also, BTW, don't like the relatively new rule that let's coaches call TOs from the sidelines. I like to keep as much of the game as possible in the hands of players. I guess it's just another example of my old-style approach.

Somebody said Solich has given him the go-ahead to call his own number if it looks like he can pick up the first down. Going back and watching the video (like 100 times!) I noticed that appeared to be the case here. If you watch the 3 guys who were blocking for him, they look up to find the ball in the sky, then turned around when they heard the crowd and didn't see the ball. The blockers looked just as surprised as Akron.

Hell, if we were playing this at Miami(OH) where the suckage drains the air of all sound, Hersey could have ran it another 20 yards before anybody realized he didn't punt the ball. I think the crowd noise was what "tipped" the Akron players on the field off to the fake!

I remember watching the replay and its crazy how only like 3 players for Akron rushed at all, two of which quickly turned after they see the snap went fine and the third turns around as soon as he sees Hershey roll right to 'punt'. I mean not one player on Akron's side was within 10 yards of him or even paying attention to him.

Its funny too because I had someone ask me about the 'weird' roll out punts and I explained to them the different kind of kick that comes from that style, as well as the possibility of the fake aspect of it. I mean the different kick alone is worth it because you get a great rugby roll kick from it which can get you a lot of extra yards if the other team can't field it.

In the Pizza Pizza Bowl I was sitting in the end zone near the 110 with the Bobcats headed away from us and early in the game we had to punt. Marshall's right side two rushers fained a rush and peeled back after two steps and the left side was as wide open as the right side was for Akron on Saturday. I told my friend to look at it the next series when we had to punt again and the very same thing took place. Of course it is much more difficult for a right footed punter who veers to the right to see what the left side is bringing. It would seem that the films should have picked up Marshall's tendencies to rush in that manor and a big play in the first half of that game may have changed the outcome.

I'm a happy fan when there is a high percentage opportunity like Hershey took against Akron and as other posters have said it should make other teams be honest in their schemes. Take what they give you.

Definitely looked like Hershey did it on his own. Very smart play. The fact that he's an athlete--speed, agility--and not 'just a punter' makes his efforts that much more credible. He got downfield in a hurry. Your average punter plods along and probably makes that first down (it was so wide open) but not in any other case. Hershey is a great threat with the leg or the legs.

James Harrison should have to hand walk that pittance of a fine to the NFL offices so it can be donated to helmet advancement research. His recent statements regarding not knowing how to play the game under the new rules are an embarassment. Please do us all a favor and follow-up on your suggestion that you might walk away from the game before you permanently injur someone.

MAC or no MAC...That guys is one serious DB (and no that doesn't stand for Defensive Back).
