From Facebook and Miamihawktalk.com

"Head Football Coach Michael Haywood announced he will make a donation to the Residence Hall OR Greek Chapter with the highest percentage of attendance at the Homecoming Football game. The reward of $2500 to go toward your respective Community Council or Chapter Philanthropy...

(Is this even legal per NCAA?? Is this a normal thing for Head Coaches to do ..seems to me to scream desperation...

How would a residence hall accept a donation? What would a residence hall do with the money?

$2500 would be a nice down payment towards cleaning and repairs following a Miami Greek Life formal.

I suppose I don't see how this is any different than when Tim O'shea offered to pay for a raffle-winning student's textbooks.

Absurd, but legal since the word "donation" is used and going toward a "Community Council or Chapter Philanthropy"

It's one thing when the marketing department offers the incentive, another when it's your head coach. I'd be interested to know if this is directly coming from his pocket. If so, you're right on with the title of this thread.

That's a pretty hefty dontation though in any case...  wow

Ha I know Brown Hall could have used $2500 the year I lived in it as a freshman...

Will OZONERS or Bobcat Attackers be counted. Seems like in previous years these were the biggest groups.

Too bad Fiami has to resort to gimmicks and promises of a hefty "donation"...a "donation" to what may I ask..haha we all know that is a JOKE..they could give 500 bucks to the Red Cross then spend 2000 on a kegger...who thought of this great idea and on HOMECOMING NO LESS..isnt Homecoming supposed to be already packed out?? I'm just curious is to if this is LEGAL per the NCAA...

Hats off to Coach Haywood for putting his personal capital behind his product, we can't even get our coaches to join the OBC (which means ANY donation to ICA, even their own sport!).

If you try to post the word "Roethlisberger" at MHT, the screen will end up displaying something that expresses the moderation team's general feelings about him.

Love and honor to Miami!

To trigger it, however, you have to spell "Roethlisberger" correctly.  I think independent study credit may be available at OU-Chillicothe for those of you who manage.

And, for the record, while it's not great that we need our coach to pony up a charitable donation to get students in the stands, I give our athletic department and Coach Haywood full marks for trying something innovative to capitalize on the enthusiasm we're starting to re-generate around football

Best personal regards,
DG

Does MUM teach how to use punctuation? ;)

But DG, I agree it is a great thing that the coach is doing whatever he can to drum up support. Using his cash, or otherwise. Miami, especially, where hoops and football are a not-so-close second and third to hockey. I wish our coaches & marketing folks would keep working towards doing whatever it takes to have a big student turnout at each game. Props to Miami's HC.

JCW, are you talking about Solich, or all of the coaches? Because I see a handful of coaches on there. Just curious what direction you were throwing stones.

The list speaks for it's self.  Not just this years but the archived list of the past years as well.

It apparently didn't do much good.  The official attendance was 17,000 but you can count on maybe 12,000.

For a homecoming I was expecting more to come home. Pittiful crowd for a big event. I guess Ohio being the older school makes for more returning alumni.  Although I do not recall seeing many returning from the class of 1804 at our homecoming last week.

Yes, I definitely feel that our 1804-1810 classes were making their presence felt at our homecoming while Miami missed out on alumni from those years.

Come on, guys, it was the Class of 1897, one of the greatest in Ohio football history, that had the real impact on Homecoming this year.  Go Chrysanthemums!

Note: Chrysanthemums was the unofficial nickname for the '97 team; way before the day of Rufus and legendary mascot fights.

Let's keep that quiet. I'm afraid this might create a push to change the mascot back to a potted plant thus avoiding further embarrassment to the university in having an actual humanoid mascot.

Well, did you ever consider that the active ingredient in many anti-lice shampoos is derived from chrysanthemums?  This would seem the perfect mascot in that it could provide the necessary medicinal compound for de-licing all the Bobcat faithful after a trek to Oxford or a Peden or Convo encounter.  Got to consider all the angles . . .
