Sucessful season?

After the 1-3 start, we were hoping to at least get a bowl bid. Now, we're a game away from Detroit.

My question; how will you measure this as a sucessful season?

A) lose to kent but still make a bowl game
B) get to the MAC title and bowl game
C) Win either MAC title OR bowl game
D) (to quote Major League) "win the whole ______ thing"

To put into perspective what all of this would mean:

1st MAC title in 42 years
1st Bowl win... ever

And a little icing on th cake... we are at an overall winning percentage of .492. 18 wins and we surpass .500 as a program. All of this can be done while Frank is still here.

I'll take "C" for $1,000, Alex. We haven't won a MAC title in 42 years and have never won a bowl game, so doing one or the either makes this a successful season to me. Just making it to the MAC Championship doesn't do it for me anymore.

For me personally, winning the MAC Championship is most important. We can't push forward to being a well-respected program unless we can beat our own. There's a lot of excitement right now for Ohio Athletics and it would be great to give these fans another MAC Championship to be excited about.

This question begs another question mentioned in another thread. Is Ohio better off from a national perspective by winning the MAC and playing Troy, for example in the Little Caeser's Pizza Bowl, or from a national visibilty point-of-view losing to Kent next week (heaven forbid!) and playing a Big 12 school like Iowa State in the Compass Bowl and winning that bowl game? Yes I believe in winning every game you play, etc. That's not the question.

The question is, are we better off playing in a non MAC-affiliated bowl against a BCS member conference team and beating them? Which one gets Ohio more recognition nationally?

Yes Love I know the schedule is a black hole from a draw perspective but we need to own our own level / region first. I also believe that our potential increased fan base would respond better to winning than it would to big names...At least at this stage.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression they would all be televised the same.

Regardless of it, we play conference championships to win them. If we start being king of the hill in the MAC, maybe we can get those Iowa States to come to Peden.

I want a MAC Championship too. The bowl appearances are nice, but don't mean much to me personally in comparison with winning the MAC.

Yes, this season is already a successful season. No doubt in my mind.

Will it become a truly great season in Ohio football history? We'll see.

C will be a successful season.
D will be a highly successful season.

Winning 11 games in a season will be something no other Ohio teams has ever accomplished. Winning 10 games will be something that only two other Ohio teams have every done -- 1960 and 1968.

Below is a quick and dirty spreadsheet that I put together with season winning percentages. I did a quick scan of the record book and put the data into the spreadsheet. I could have made an error or two. If you find one, please let me know and I'll make the appropriate correction. This spreadsheet includes total winning percentage including any post-season play. Any season with a .700 percent winning level or better is included. Frank has yet to make the list because his 9-3 regular seasons were both follow by two post-season losses. Hopefully, this is the year that string will be broken. BTW, most of Peden's schedules included at least one opponent from a "big-time" program -- lots of games and several wins against the likes Illinois, Indiana, Purdue and similar level schools. For what it's worth, here's my table:

Option A will be very disappointing.
Option B is alright, especially after how bad we looked to start the season.
Option C is what was expected going in and still should be the standard. I will take either win, though of course a MACC win is way more prestigious.
Option D was the dream scenario with the potential coming into this year and still is, but not expected.

replicating last year's record and results is a success. More than that (MACC and/or bowl win) is greatly desired. If we beat Kent but lose the MACC and a bowl I'll be dissapointed but not in a Temple fan 'ZOMG the sky is falling!!1!' type of way. We're making a significant step in a long journey.

Step 1 for this program was to become consistently competitive in the MAC. We're doing that.
Step 2 is to dominate the MAC. We can't do that until we start winning the MACC.
Step 2.5 is winning a bowl. any bowl. against anybody. I'll take a pizza bowl against a coachless .500 Marshall team.
Step 3 surprise a quality opponent in a bowl win (Utah in Vegas for example)
Step 4 increased strength of OOC and steal some quality wins.

Maybe my expectations are a little lower, but I think any winning season is a successful season, so for me this is already a successful season...especially when there's a W next to every game against a MAC East opponent.

Now, if the question is how to measure success the rest of the way, I'd go for the MAC title. We've been there twice now without the prize, so being there is great but getting it is success. Ask a Buffalo Bills or Minnesota Vikings fan which they would rather have; four Super Bowl losers or one winner.

MAC Title helps recruiting the most. Winning your conference is the way you get the stud QB or RB that will consider the MAC in order to start as a Freshman. Being the best among your peers, coupled with the atmosphere in Athens will make it the top destination in the MAC.

Getting to back to back bowls is a historic accomplishment. Winning back to back east titles also would be tremendous accomplishment. A MAC title would be the ultimate goal. Winning a bowl game would be second to that up winning both a MAC title and the bowl and finishing out 11-3 and perhaps ranked in final AP poll would be something really special that only the 1968 team did. We haven't won 10 games since 1968. That would put this team at the top of all-time Ohio team in history if they can close the deal. Even getting 8 wins and a bowl with all the key injuries and slow start is a huge accomplishment. This team really showed some character this year. They were left for deal after 4 weeks. After losing to lowly Marshall and 4 poor showings to start the year the team slowly put the wheels back on the train each week and got a little better each week. Right now this team can feel that they are on the verge of accomplishing something special. 5th bowl appearance in Ohio history and perhaps 3rd MAC East title wrapped up in 6 days.

Already successful but winning the MAC would be huge for this program. Having watched the progress from day one since Solich came aboard I can say I am impressed by the slow and steady growth. Time to step up though and bring the MAC title to Ohio.

Agreed. Ohio's 3rd MAC East title this year also ties Miami for most MAC East titles all time at 3. Marshall won the first 6 MAC East titles but they are no longer a MAC school. This would have to be a good selling point for recruits. Toledo leads the MAC West with 5 overall titles in that division.
