I can't remember OU ever receiving votes in a top 25 AP or Coaches' poll before...is this a first?  Also, it would be nice to see NIU move into the top 25 prior to the MAC Championship Game, setting up the possibility for our first ever win over a ranked team.

after what I saw in michigan yesterday I don't think northern would have much problem beating them. That defense is awfull. We would give them all they want also.

sad but true story - OHIO snapped some awful losing streak in the fall of 1993.  Then started receiving votes in the coaches poll - clearly it was a joke, but they were receiving votes for like two weeks.

In the modern era, Grobe's 1997 team from what I remember climbed as high as #30 in the voter polls starting 8-1 before crashing to end the season. The 2006 and 2009 teams received a token vote or 2 prior to the MAC Championship game. Ohio winning out beating a ranked NIU in the MACC and a bowl win sitting at 11-3 probably will land the cats in the top 25 and IMO the best Bobcat season ever. Better than the often referenced 1968 10-1 team that lost to Richmond in a bowl game that played Dayton and William & Mary in the non-conference schedule.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Good call, I'd completely forgotten about that.  Sad but true, indeed.

OHIO finished the aforementioned 1968 season (10-1-0) ranked #20 in the AP poll and #18 in the Coaches poll (released prior to the bowl game). We had risen to #15 (AP) before falling to Richmond in the bowl game.

I went back and looked and neither the 2006 or 2009 teams ever received votes in the AP or Coaches polls.  We did receive votes in the Harris poll both years, though.

even with our anemic OOC we might have been 1 missed 2pt conversion and 2 Turnovers to Toledo inside our own 5 yrd line away from being in the top 25 at 10-1.

NIU in waiting at 26 in all 3.  Just a single vote shy in the coaches poll.

Who thought after going 1-3 we could finish the season in the Top 25?

Right now beating Kent State is the only thing that matters.

Time to take care of business one game at a time.

And when was the last time the football team and the men's basketball team showed up in polls within the same 7-day period?  Groce's Guys got 3 points in the AP Poll that came out Monday (the day before the Oakland game), to tie Maryland and Utah St. for 43rd.

That is kind of a random list up there. Dream Conference? NIU is close to top 25 in a media poll but has a long way to go in the BCS standings if this Sagarin ranking is any indication of where they stand in most computers. Ohio would be lucky to crack the top 25 in a media poll at 11-3 with very few votes so far.

The Sagarin numbers are a lot more realistic than the beauty polls, which go out of their way sometimes to cast "politically correct" votes in favor of the top teams in non-BCS conferences. Ohio would not be favored against teams ahead of them in the Sagarin poll, so should they realistically be ranked ahead of them?

From sagarin:
60     Temple
75     Ohio University

I think that if we were to line up for this game again we might just be favored

Im pretty surprised by the votes.  I thought maybe if and after we beat Kent and move to 9 wins, we'd pick up a few.  Now I am thinking if a few of those teams in front of Ohio lose this week and we take care of business in Kent, we might slip into the 20s.  Meanwhile, I think NIU is on their way to being ranked after next week which will be cool to see for the MAC Championship game.

I don't think the Kent State win is going to impress voters too much. Maybe up to 10 votes in each poll. NIU should be ranked in the media polls though won't make the BCS top 25 because of computers. Its the BCS top 25 ranking which is annotated by outlets as a teams ranking so the general public won't be aware of NIU's media poll ranking. Its also time the major outlets stopped reporting the AP poll rankings as they don't calculate into the BCS formula and have a sole purpose now of influncing the Harris and Coach's vote.

Hold on, I'm about to jack this thread all up... I apologize in advance...

I'm just curious, but why is this team usually considered to be the best?  I find it really interesting how whenever we talk about the great teams, this group is usually considered #1.  Now, before I get too far gone here... I love that team.. .I'm friends with several members from it and it absolutely ranks in my top 3...Also, not saying you're making that statement Wes, but just a comment on the general feelings I've seen on here...

But, in my opinion the 1960 National Small College Championship team would have to be ranked #1.  They went 10-0 but didn't play in a bowl.  Minnesota won it all in the big division that year and there was an article in Sports Illustrated about the Bobcats and how they could possibly beat the Gophers that year.  I think the fact that so much was made about the '68 team making our last bowl game before 2006 has taken them to the top in the minds of most.

If I were to rank them I'd go:

1960: 10-0
1929: 9-0 (outscored opponents 305-7... that's not a typo...305-7...How would you like to be the guy who gave up that TD?  In fact, from '29-31 Ohio went 24-1-1 and outscored opponents 704-53.... That's unbelievable... I don't care what era you played in... No wonder we play in "Peden" stadium...)
1968: 10-1

Now... if the 'Cats win out this year they would be a solid #4 for me...

Anyone notice that , while it will be short lived due to our basketball loss to Oakland, both football and basketball have votes for top 25 in the AP poll. Anyone know the last time that happened?

I think NIU has a shot to be top-25 in the BCS if the chips fall their way.  A loss or two in front of them, and hang another 50+ point night on EMU, it seems plausible.  Don't forget that votes in the Coaches and Harris polls make up 2/3 of the poll numbers.  NIU would be 26th in the BCS standings this week.

Also, don't forget that Sagarin is just one of six computer rankings, and the overall ranking isn't what is used in the BCS rankings.  Additionally, i've been tracking those computer rankings with respect to Ohio all season, and Sagarin has consistently had us ranked lower than the other five (and the highest and lowest get tossed).

FWIW, Ohio would be 37th in the BCS standings if they completed them out to everyone who received a point.

Thanks for the stats. It makes me feel better about our chances of a win over a top 25 BCS standings school.
