Things have gone downhill since their Orange Bowl appearance.  They are now 119th in the Sagarin Ratings, 28 spots behind Wofford.

Wow.

I knew they were having a tough year. I never thought I'd see that kind of vitriol towards Grobie. Hope he can turn things around.

He is very well liked, but they are really down on the assistants including Lobo.  The Catch 22 is Grobe's Loyalty on one hand to his assistants which frustrates the football side of the Wake fans, but then again it reminds them of why they like Grobe as a person.

They have gotten away from the run game during the Skinnner years and now they don't have much of a line or identity on offense.  Tanner Price the freshman QB may be a real talent in the future, but is struggling right now.

On defense, they don't have the talent they did a few years ago and are playing pretty soft in coverage.

With what he's done in Winston-Salem Grobe will have the backing of the administration until his contract runs out. Its one of the lowest tier BCS jobs around. He is signed under contract until 2016 so he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Guess he should of taken that UVA or UT job when he had the chance.

of course- He lost his DC- Dean Hood about the time it all started to slide and  Probably going to get yelled at for this comment but, the Wake down hill slide started when he hired KNORR!

This is the only really bad season he's had since he's been in Winston-Salem.  He should get a few more years to get things back on track.  He's done a great job at Wake.

But not going on 4th and 1 on the other side of the 50 doesn't sound like Grobe.  Don't remember that happening when he was at Ohio.

I think Frank might be ready to retire in a few years. And if that time happens to coincide with the people of Winston-Salem tiring of the Jim Grobe show... well... maybe you can go home again.

Works for me.

He took us from the depths of football hell to something that actually resembled a football program.

The dude left us high and dry with Knorr. He basically killed my football experience in Athens (I graduated in '04). He should not be allowed to return.

Had he done that, and then had a bad year, he'd be vulnerable. Because he stayed where he has built a lot of support, it will take more than one bad year to cost him his job.

Grobe did no such thing!  Tom Boeh made that hire.

As I remember it, Grobe's parting shot was to recommend Brian Knorr for the job after not offering a position at Wake.  He may not have made the hire but his hands are all over it.

Still, that doesn't matter to me as far as his returning (fat chance); he is nothing but a class act.

That was only window dressing.  Boeh actually offered the job to two other Grobe assistants before he turned to Brian.  This was an example of Tom not understanding a sport and coaching, a lot of sub plots at this time, but none of them for this tread.

Look, after the way it turned out I was the original anti-Knorr.  But at the point we hired him, I think there was unanimous approval on this board of the Knorr hire.  By all counts, Brian Knorr is a fine man and an intelligent man.  It made sense to think that he would build on what Coach Grobe started.

Anyone OHIO person who wouldn't be happy to have Grobe here (I'm not in any way advocating for removal of current staff) is off-base.  It began again with Grobe.  Those were fun years.

I agree on all points with Monroe.  The Greg Gregory hire seemed to make sense with his option background, but that did not work out.  However, Gregory opened some doors into his hometown of Richmond (and Fork Union) and we have had a lot of players commit to Ohio from this area even since he left the program.  Taj Henley, Mark Parson, David Miller (OL), Justin Fitzgerald, Skylar Allen and the Tatum brothers just to name a few.

My neighbors son plays against Fork Union this weekend so I might have to check out the legendary program.

While I agree with you in theory, I don't think you turn your back on what Solich has been able to build here over the last 5 seasons. And what I mean by that is as he nears retirement, you've gotta hope that Frank is more than just one man and he's grooming the staff as a whole and someone specifically on this staff to take it over and continue to build the program up.

Continuing to build on what has begun > Going in a new/different direction

Going back to Grobe would be a completely new/different direction in my book, and I would hate to see us lose the momentum that we've built over the past 5 seasons.

No argument or position taken on that thought, HeHate.  I'm totally fine with the current staff.  My comments were merely about how I feel about Grobe.

We were fortunate with Grobe and we are fortunate with GotFrank.

Sage wisdom. Buffalo had the chance to continue building on what Gill had put in place, but, decided not. Ohio need just hope the Solich train remains on the tracks for some years to come. It won't be the shiny rah, rah deal but they won't be out worked or out coached.

How many conversations have you had with Grobe and/or his wife about his personal and family goals?  He's not your standard "b flat" coach-for-higher-to-the-highest-bidder type of guy.  Having said that I think it's highly unlikely that he would come back here.  First the timing of his firing at WFU and Frank's retirement would have to be perfect. And, that in itself is unlikely.  Then, we'd have to decide that we wanted to make a major change back to a different style of football rather than build directly on what Frank has put in place.  I don't think that's likely either.  Like many on this board I really like Grobe, and part of me would really love to see him back in green and white.  My realistic side, which I often suppress, tells me that for the reasons enumerated the return of Grobe to Ohio is a real long shot at best.

OCF, answer me this.  Ohio football is not just coach Solich, there is an entire staff.  If coach Grobe were to return, would he keep the curent staff who are now on the downhill side of a decade at Ohio?  I would really cringe to see these Ohio coaches who have done the lions share of fixing Ohio football kicked to the curb.  Really a nonissue since coach Solich is more likely ot stay for 100 wins at Ohio than retire.  JMHO

Bcat2, ideally if Grobe were to come back he'd keep a lot of the current staff.  However, that's not what usually happens in cases like this.  Coaches always seem to want to hired their own guys.  I would suspect that, in the very unlikely event that we are faced with this issue, Grobe would try to keep one or two from the current staff and then bring in some of his recently fired staff from Wake.  Actually, though, my major point in my prior post was simply to take issue with wellstoncat's statement.  When Grobe was our coach I had the opportunity to talk with he and his wife on more than one occasion about career goals and I think I have a good idea what makes the man tick.  If things do sour at Wake for Grobe, and Doc Holiday has a short tenure at Marshall, I could see Grobe going to Marshall because of his family ties to Huntington, but that also would require some very unlikely timing.  In short, if Grobe leaves Wake and takes another job I would fully expect that to be his last head coaching gig, unless he runs into a very distasteful situation.

and seriously we are talking about this why?

If you know Jim Grobe you know he will probably play golf every day when he's done at Wake and enjoy his wife Holly and his grand kids.
