The Dallas Cowboys are already in the NFC East so I guess it only makes sense for Texas Christian to be in the Big East. Right?

I have a feeling that all of this conference swapping and realignment will be about as successful as new coke was.

TCU was the unwanted stepchild of the old SWC and wanted to be in the Big XII. Being a private University and with Baylor already in that conference they had no shot at being asked. They seem to want to be in a BCS conference so bad that they are not looking at the long term implications. TCU better hope to sustain their recent success in football or this move will prove to be an unwise one.

ARE YOU KIDDING? They are guaranteed a minimum of $2million a year in bowl revenues from conference sharing even if they never attend another bowl game.

Once you're in a BCS conference, you're set. Whether or not you're good doesn't matter, because your conference is guaranteed the BCS payday. Minnesota has sucked for years. So has Indiana. They've brought in almost $3 million every single year to NOT play in a bowl game.

It is projected that TCU will actually SAVE travel dollars for their overall athletic program.  They were always traveling to the west to compete in their conference.  Easier and cheaper to fly to the Big East markets.

Didn't see this coming at all.  Wow.  I understand the previous post, but it still seems an odd alignment geographically.

As opposed to the current conference they're in?

I've heard their academics hold them back, but I don't know enough about the university or the academic equation to give that perspective any credence.  You would think the Big "12" would be an interesting fit.

A lot of the rationale for the Big East expansion has to do with the Big Ten going to 12 teams. For one its going to be increasingly difficult to compete with other BCS conferences on a 7 game conference schedule when all the other leagues are moving to 9 conference games. Further by adding TCU to the Big East and likely Villanova in football the Big East is protecting itself against ND leaving for the Big Ten. I'm glad to see that TCU was able to get an all sport offer from the Big East instead of football only like they did with Temple.

BCS shools are not all set, in fact TCU is now going to be forced to up their ante and commitment in real dollars and be competitive in facilities, salaries, clothing, equipment and the likes.  Many BCS schools struggle with this even though they are in the BCS.

Keep in mind Boise has been playing out of their mind the last couple of seasons. This year was their one chance to slip into the national title game riding a 24 game winning streak. Think Toledo or Miami Ohio in the 70's with those long winning streaks. They were just as good but never had the ability to back it up in major bowl games like Boise State. TCU is betting that Boise and Nevada will fall back to earth shortly and with the PAC expanding the long term prospects for the MWC are more in line with CUSA than the Big East or another BCS conference. Boise isn't getting into the PAC anytime soon. The Big XII might consider BYU at some stage but Boise is even that much further from Big XII country.

TCU has some very deep pockets for athletics and are spending 100 million dollars to renovate their stadium.

TCU is betting that Boise and Nevada will fall back to earth?  Uh, what about TCU itself?  Prior to Coach Patterson's arrival, TCU had been a perennial doormat.  What are the Frogs' prospects after Patterson's departure?

I know of only one D-1 program that has kept winning despite coaching changes.  Yep, it's our younger but bigger sister in Columbus.  All other programs have endured down periods - i.e., losing seasons - when not blessed with coaching stars.  Think LSU, Alabama, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Washington,Syracuse, Pitt, etc.

It's real obvious that geography is no longer a factor in determining conference afiliation.  The airlines will love it!  The charter bus companies, not so much.  Regional rivalries are getting trashed right and left.  The WAC could and should disappear as a FBS conference.  One wonders when the shoe will drop with the underfinanced conferences and teams will start bailing out .  Stay tuned and hang on to your hat, it's going to be a rocky few years.

College football in large part is extremely cyclical. It takes equal parts talent, veterans, good coaching, and a favorable schedule to be very good in any given year. TCU is extremely smart to strike while the iron is smart and get their automatic bowl bid as the current system stands. TCU would have ran roughshod over the Big East this year and unless that conference picks it up even an average TCU team will be able to compete in that conference.

Right. TCU is no flash in the pan like Marshall or Rothlisberger era Redchicken. TCU has been on the rebound for 25 years ever since the SMU death penalty. Overnight it made TCU the more competitive football school but the results didn't show when the Frogs were overmatched in the SWC. They won the SWC title in 1994 in the second to last year of the league. Dallas-Ft Worth is one of those football markets like Miami, Fl  or Pittsburgh that is always capable of producing a top 25 college club on the backs of local talent. That team largely because of historical circumstances for Dallas-Ft Worth is now TCU. They are being realistic about the future of their program too, they are actually downsizing their stadium from 48k to 40k. They know they'll be just another Pitt or Louisville for the Big East football conference over the long haul with 8-4 type seasons more the norm. They are up so high now though in all aspects as a program that with the BCS label I can't see SMU or North Texas over taking them in the local recruiting scene.
