Bowl Situation -Cats are in!!

OK, I stayed up until 1 am to wait to see Fresno State come from behind to beat Idaho. I will buy a Bulldog hoodie at Foot Locker this week, because their win eliminated Idaho from to "round of 70."

In other words, Ohio is IN. At least I think so...unless:
For some crazy reason a bowl chooses to take 6-6 Western Michigan or Mid Tenn St. (must beat FIU next week)
Arizona State wins in Arizona next week AND the NCAA gives them an exemption (they have 2 wins against i-AAs)
Washington beats Washington State AND Oregon State beats #1 Oregon - don't see both happening.

I don't know where the Cats will go. I'm just happy they're going!!!

Here's how it unfolded...

The PAC 10 could have one, but now it's a little cloudier...
Cal is 5-7 OUT following their loss to Washington. Goodbye Bears.
Wash is 5-6 after beating the Bears. They host Wash. St. next week - win and they're in.
Ore St. 5-6 -- Getting clobbered by Stanford, it's a loss, next week...#1 Oregon. Bye bye Beavers.
AZ St. 5-6 -- need a roadie at AZ next week and NCAA waiver (2 W's vs. AA teams - but PAC 10 needs another team)

These SEC team can take the other two bids.
Tennessee 6-6 -- IN after beating UK this afternoon.
Georgia 6-6 --IN, defeated Ga. Tech tonight

The rest are less likely to become eligible...
Cincy - 4-7 -- OUT after losing to UConn
Houston 5-7 -- OUT, loss at Texas Tech
Idaho 5-7 - OUT, lost to Fresno St. tonite

I think you've covered it pretty well. If we want a bowl, we better hope for no upsets. It's possible though-Houston and Idaho would be my top candidates-but neither is likely. I think 3 will qualify from the Sun Belt-would one of those be picked before us-wouldn't think so, but proximity might be worth something to a bowl committee.

BTW, one site I saw mentioned Arizona State getting an exemption if they win out-not likely since they play Arizona-even though they would be 6-7. Haven't heard of that before, but if enough teams qualify without them, it probably won't happen.

If we really want to go, pray for Tenn, California and Georgia to lose, then we'd have several possibilities for sure.

Az St is 5-6 and has just one game left. They would need an exemption because they played two 1AA teams this year -- Portland and Northern Az.

Also I think MAC officials would require that all the 8-4 MAC teams get bids before Western.

And, regarding Arizona State, you are correct. Apparently the could get a waiver if they beat AZ next week. They'd be 6*6 (they did beat 2 AA teams), but the NCAA will provide a waiver because the PAC 10 may have an empty bowl tie in.

Actually, the Blue Potato Hot Potato Bowl (aka Smurf Turf Bowl) pays better than either of the other MAC tie-in bowls. Or more accurately, they actually pay something. And, there's no ticket guarantee needed, at least according to what I've been able to glean from the always accurate reporting of the pundits on this board.

Right now, it's looking like there might be 70 bowl eligible teams (or 71 if Georgia beats Georgia Tech). Things look good for Ohio. Western Michigan would be an obvious odd team out if there is 71. We'll know a lot more when all the Pac-10 and WAC games get played tonight.

The game in Boise pays the most upfront money of any MAC tie-in or any possible at-large landing spot. The reason that CUSA left the game in mobile and the MAC stayed is the MAC was willing to accept less money at the time than CUSA under the glorious leadership of Rick Cryst. The new commish so far has done a good job with the Boise money and the secondary agreements. Last time around the SBC boxed the MAC out of secondary tie-ins with the compass bowl but not this time around. The way the MAC by-laws are worded is that Little Ceasars has the #1 selection but after that the bowls are free to choose who they want.Given the MAC tried to have ranked Ball State match up with Boise State I exoect to see them try the same thing with NIU. There is no doubt in my mind that NIU is going to be ranked next week and will likely rout Miami in the championship game. That would make for a pretty good matchup of 2 ranked teams.

That was big. The SBC only has 2 bowl eligible teams and only 1 school yet has a chane in MTSU. MTSU has to play on the road against the SBC #1 Florida International so a win isnt likely there. My guess it will probably be then be Louisville vs. Toledo in the Little Ceasars Bowl as ND is positioned to take one of the Big East bowl slots this year.

I love the idea of playing Boise State in the Humanitarian Bowl. Boise would feel down by playing in that game when they could have been playing for it all, and we'd feel lucky just to make a bowl after the crap-fest that was Kent State. They'd have nothing to win and we'd have nothing to lose. That's how upsets happen.

The bowl situation in the PAC-10 is crazy this year. Starting at the top with Boise State and LSU losing today Stanford effectively clinches a BCS game through the top 4 rule. The PAC is sending 2 schools to the BCS. The PAC has 6 bowl tie-ins but its only going to end up from anywhere between 3 and 5 bowl eligible teams MAX this year. Most likely it looks like 4 bowl eligible out of the PAC with Washington qualifying in the final game. That would normally be 2 bowl openings to cover PAC teams in the Las Vegas and San Franscico Bowls however with the PAC placing 2 in the BCS the Sun Bowl is also projecting to be open. The Sun Bowl would be against the ACC #4 and that is looking like an 8-3 NC State team. Its a highly unusual situation to have such an attractive bowl open. My guess is that 6 or 7 win Army would fill that slot but how about the Bobcats? That would make for an interesting story to see Ohio return to the Sun Bowl for the second time. Ohio would still earn a MAC level payout from the Sun Bowl as a MAC school but it would make for an interesting matchup.
