What's the best guess for who our throwing quarterbackwill be next year. Bates can not start with the arm he has,the one throw I saw against Temple was in the dirt. Wasn't there a transfer from ND and what other hope do we have for next year. Sorry but being in South Carolina makes it tough to keep up with all the speculation.

It depends on development and who knows maybe even recruiting. It would be a major surprise if we landed a juco QB like Boo who could come in and start so that one is way out of the box.

Bates could improve on his throwing and passing decision making. He didn't look half bad in the spring game.

Tettleton played some last year....but like Bates he's known more as a running QB.

Kyle Snyder may be a redshirt freshman next year (let's hope he keeps it this year) but Frank has said that if Boo went down that Snyder would have been #2 this year. If you watch the kid throw you'll see he has the best arm of the returning QB's.

The Notre Dame QB transfer is Derek Roback from Waverly and as JC has pointed out he may end up at tight end. He has tight end size and is the second best QB athlete next to Bates...but only Superman is a better athlete than Bates.  It depends on how and if he develops and how the others pan out. If he's not any better than Snyder or Tettleton then he may be moved. Like Bates this year you can't have an athlete of his ability riding the pines.

Stay tuned.

My money is on Kyle Snyder next year, with Bates in an expanded wildcat role, or just moving to wideout.

I'd also expect 1-2 true freshmen in the recruiting class, so when all is said and done there will be 4-6 QB's to choose from, all of them with some ability. Among that group I'm confident that someone will rise to the occasion.

If chucking passes five yards short to a receiver 12 yards away  disqualifies someone than Theo would have never gotten back off the bench.  An earlier thread showed that all Bates needs to do is get to something like a 55% completion ability and he'll be sufficient especially combined with his running abilities.  With power running and a stout defense avoid those game changing interceptions.

Bates will be the 2011 starter if healthy and if you want to bring in another passer type for a series or couple of plays than it will continue to pressure how future teams prepare for the Bobcats.

It would be nice to see Bates improve his arm and accuracy to become a better passer, however I keep hearing from people that Snyder is maybe the best pocket QB on the team.  So it may all come down to how good our line is and how effective our RBs are to determine what kind of QB we need to succeed.

Snyder starts unless Bates improves his throwing immensely--not saying he can't but he'll need a lot of reps.  Bates on the field a fair portion of the time.  Need a thrower given our O-lines pass blocking and the fine receivers we have.

Bates also must learn to not lose yards by trying to extend plays when the first hole isn't there.  He's done well and we've used him well in situations.

Roback to linebacker, if not q.b. or t.e., given that size and speed?

I believe Roback was a safety at Notre Dame, but isn't the whole reason he transferred so that he could play QB? If he wanted ot play LB or Safety he could have just stayed at Notre Dame.

With all due respect to our returning options...I am still holding out hope for an impact freshman QB next year that can play alongside Bates.  If not that, I would like to see Roback get a shot.  We could have a solid team next year and the biggest question mark is if we can replace Boo (maybe a tie for if we can replace the D-Line).

I have confidence that we'll be fine at qb next year with the lads who are on our roster.

It's the D-line that will determine our fate.  If we get guys who stop the run at our usual standard and who can get the pass rush, we will be good.  Gotta have that pass rush from the front liners.

D-Line first team for next year doesn't concern me, but they will need to develop some depth.

With all the younger QB's on our roster 3 that are freshmen (1 redshirt, 2 true), getting a QB will be a challenge.

My guess goes to a similar situation to this year with Kyle winning the standard QB role but the rotation with Phil being more level than it has been this year.  There''s a reason he was a Big 12 recruit to begin with...And a reason he looked so good in the Spring Game...He's a true dual threat that dealt with injury this year just like Boo did early on.

2005 STATS: (10 Games) - Bates threw for 1,207 yards, 13 touchdowns, and five interceptions in completing 74 of 149 pass attempts. He also rushed for 623 yards and eight touchdowns on 32 carries.

2006 STATS: (11 games) Bates threw for 1,766 yards and 18 touchdowns; rushed for 623 yards and nine touchdowns.

I trust coach Gdowski. I expect them to go with experience and to scheme to the strengths of their starter. Given the returning OL I do not think there will be anything too cute.

I mentioned this in another thread at the beginning of the season, but I don't believe that Frank has ever started a QB he recruited out of HS since he got here.  I believe the last four year QB to even start a single game at Ohio was Austin Everson.  Since then, only transfers have started: there's been Bower, Scott, Jackson, and Bates.  I don't believe (but could be wrong) that Brandon Jones or Josh Febus ever started a game.  So I think that there is a strong likelihood that Frank could look towards the JUCOs for a QB for next year.  It definitely would not surprise me.

TRIVIA:  Who is the only player recruited by Frank to throw a pass in four separate seasons as a Bobcat?  See if you can get the answer without cheating and looking it up.

I would think Taylor Price throwing off those reverses would be the answer.

Those throwing numbers for Bates are better than I would have guessed.  We seem to use him with the thought of running first and foremost..and almost only.  Can't recall many times when he's just faded back, surveyed the field, planted and thrown it.  A qb on OUr team who's going to see the field predominantly has to be able to do that--look at OUr receivers and O-line! .

I've been critical of the use of Bates and his hesitancy at points but I'd love for him to show and develop his passing side.  Hey, if we put it on kents like we're capable of, we should let Phil play significant time and air it OUt.

If Ohio puts it on Kent as you say, we will see Bates, but, it will be to run the clock. I don't think coach Solich would ever be a part of passing down field with a big lead. Mr. Bates has time yet with coach Gdowski to become what we all want for him. It would be cool if Bates could sniff what coach Gdowski accomplished in his one year of starting, his senior year, when I believe he was known to be the "running" threat. See the link and read the 8th para down; http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gdowski_ge...

- I'm not willing to write off Phil Bates as the full-time quarterback next season.

Funny things happen when guys become seniors. They suddenly get it. If you had told me that Austin Everson would ever be a proficient DI quarterback when he first began playing, I would've said you were crazy.

If Bates puts in the film work and gets acclimated with the talented receivers Ohio has, he can be a fantastic MAC quarterback.

- Plus, as craptacular as the MAC is currently, you can beat the bottom of the conference with a running game alone. It's just a few games where they'll need to throw it more than 20 times in a game.

- Looking at the quarterback stocks, it's almost as if Solich recruited with a platoon system in mind. Tettleton seems destined to be the Phil Bates of the future.

Bates will be the man next year. Count on it. Also count on him working out the kinks in his throwing mechanics and becoming an adequate passer.

Hanging in there!
