Our next 3 competitors in the MAC East have lost quality HCs, Montgomery (Miami), Golden (Temple), Martin (Kent). Ohio has all 3 at home next year so a run at the division title looks promising to say the least.

Haywood's star seemed to rise exceptionally fast, based on his short body of work as a Head Coach. While I acknowledge his accomplishment in winning the MAC Championship, it seems his resume has been possibly overenhanced by the Miami wins over Temple and Northern Illinois. As we well know, we throttled them in Oxford this year and the remaining Miami wins up to the Temple game were less than impressive. BG certainly had their shot at beating them in the Fog and an absolutely wretched Akron team wasa fourth down conversion from knocking them off. As an OC at Notre Dame under Charlie Weiss didn't Charlie take the play calling away from Haywood on a couple of occasions? Not wishing the guy any ill will, just surprised PITT gave him the job without much Head Coaching experience. But again it's Steve Pederson and his own track record of jettising and hiring Head Coaches is nothing to hang his hat on.

While I'm obviously not sorry to see Haywood leave Miami,it bothers me
when any coach leaves his team in the lerch before a bowl game, especially
if they take a large part of their staff with them.

To me,if a coach trully cared about their team and their program they
would coach them through the end of the season.

The teams play their hearts out for the coach and then get left in the cold.

Doesn't the NFL have a rule about interviewing/hiring coaches during the season/playoffs?  Wonder if the NCAA could do the same.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

A lot is overblown when it comes to recruits bolting. They may lose some, especially those from Texas, but they could gain some like Toledo did when they stole our verbal Molls. I'm sure Miami will hire a good coach.

Plus  when you look at their  commits they have a plethora of cornerbacks.....a position that we have one  commit from  already and it is not necessarily an area of need.

We won't need to steal anybody this year.

A kick to the gut MAC teams seem to take on a regular basis.  While this obviously speaks volumes for the coaching pipeline it also leaves a sour taste in my mouth regarding as few specific coaches especially when they completely abandon their teams during what is usually a rare bowl opportunity for the particular University.  I know it's partly the nature of the business but I can't bring myself to believe it would be an insurmountable task to build your new staff and still bring your former team (the major reason you even have this new opportunity) through their bowl.

Haywood's star may never be shining brighter and I am assuming he felt he had to take the opportunity. I think the stability that Frank has set up at Ohio makes this program even more attractive to recruits in the next couple of years and will continue to strengthen the growth of the program.
That being said I am sure Miami will hire a capable coach.

I think Shane should get another chance. I think he learned lots the first time and will do much better this time.

Ted,
I'd like to agree with ya....but not sure I can.

I've followed Shane for years as he and I graduated from the same HS. He was a few years behind me but knew him and always enjoyed seeing him be successful as both a player and a coach.

Had a hard time feeling that way while he was at Miami though....lol.

Seriously,
He took over a pretty full cupboard when Hoeppener left and was not able to sustain. Idoubt he ever gets another shot unless with a bottom feeder mid major or FCS(D1AA or whatever the hell it is) school.

Hope I'm wrong on this one.

Haywood has to look out for himself first and foremost. Part of the problem is that signing day is approaching rapidly and Pitt needs a head coach who can go out and recruit right now to keep in place the top level kids they already have as well as try and get the kids on the fence. Another problem is the stupidity of Miami's bowl date. There is no way that bowl game should be that late. Absolutely absurd.

This happens too often at MAC type schools that have some success.  Even though it may keep a coach or two away from signing with a MAC school the conference should require a specific clause in every coach's contract and that is if they leave before the end of the season they forfeit all of their pay for the prior 12 months.

Let the BCS schools pay the ransom if they want a coach bad enough.  The MAC's student athletes suffer from losing coaches during bowl games.  If this is all about the student and a coach like Haywood leaves than make him pay for it.  These overpaid guys who preach to their recruits and to their parents how they are always looking out for the student/athletes are full of sh-- and should put some skin in the game.  It is a nice way to rip some cash out of the big boys as well.

Al Golden did it when his team's season was over--he can leave with his integrity intact, the other two not so much.

This is not a MAC issue but an industry wide issue.  The job is 24/7/365 and I can give you an arguement why NO time is a good time to leave/retire

Haywood is getting a million bucks, quite a raise from 364K, he did win the MAC The redhawks had a lot of injuries early in the season. They finally got a new QB and their Oline intact. Haywood is very experinced at big programs. ND Texas, LSU

That is about the way I figure it. 364k in Hamiliton County, Ohio is a handsome sum. You can pretty much have any kind of house you want. With Bush tax cuts and low interest rates, man life has gotten a lot better in the MAC. Ten years ago most MAC coaches were making 90k, just enough to be comfortbale with a big family.

Having followed Shane Montgomery's career since his high school days, I was stunned at his total lack of success as the head coach at Miami. He had been a winner at everything he did up until then.

Yes, it's nuts that the football system allows recruiting and hiring of coaches before their season ends at their current schools. The Michigan AD when asked about the status of Rodriguez said that no decision will be made until Michigan's "season" has ended. Therefore to him the season includes the bowl game. If the closeness of National Signing Day is the problem, then move it back a couple of weeks. The system has strict rules on recruiting of players. There is no reason it can't do the same when it comes to coaches.
