I can't quite get a handle on how this went. Did most of the students actually make it to the game? Were some of the students (as was mentioned in a previous thread) actually trashing our own team? Was this worth the effort or perhaps should something else be worked out for future bowl trips?

Thanks!

I think most students made it to the game, albeit many (include some "chaperones") were in an inebriated state. All of us were getting frustrated as the game progressed and people took their frustration out in different ways. Some left the game (or at least the stands) to go drink more. Others were talking trash about anything and everything, including the team, Troy, Troy's band and other fans.

Lack of sleep from partying Friday night, alcohol and frustration were not a good combo. I know one guy on our bus actually got kicked out of the game and went back to Bourbon Street. It took forever for him to make his way back to the bus and when he got on he tried to start fights with everyone around him. The chaperone was pretty close to kicking him off and leaving him there.

I think there were a lot of students who went just to experience New Orleans for cheap. I'm at every game and I saw a bunch of students who I've never seen at Peden. I heard many saying they'd rather spend another night on Bourbon than go to the game. I also heard this disturbing conversation between two girls on the bus heading down:
Girl 1: "I wonder when the football team came down?"
Girl 2: "Wait, the football team is coming too?!?"

Yes, that really happened. And no, she wasn't joking.

The bus trip was decidedly a mixed bag.  Perhaps because of the short turnaround, it was pretty disorganized.  Chaperones were pretty disinterested and hands-off.  Communication was at a minimum, so we didn't know why we were stopping sometimes or why we had to sit in a parking lot for 30-45 minutes for seemingly no reason.  Having to stop 25 minutes from the city in order to wait an hour just so we could all arrive at the same time sucked, especially because it helped make us two hours late.

What really ticked me off was on the return trip.  We had been driving for 8 hours nonstop and they made a driver switch outside Louisville.  After about 10 minutes, people started getting off the bus because, hey, we were sitting there for so long and there were restaurants all around.  Apparently there was a planned food stop about 20 minutes after the driver switch (why not combine the two?).  If this had been explained to us, I think we would have been fine with it.  Instead, one of the marketing people decides to start yelling at us like little children, complete with finger pointing, to get back on the buses.  This did not go over well.  That sort of behavior is simply unacceptable.

As Youngstown alluded, it was pretty easy to tell who was there purely for NOLA.  The scene at the Superdome was pretty ugly; many of them had never been to an Ohio game before.  They didn't know the chants, didn't know the traditions, didn't even know to take hats off for the Alma Mater.  Some were so drunk they passed out in their seats.  One girl drunkenly fell and busted her face up.  Some berated our players, their players, their band, and even some of the O Zone.

But the festivities were pretty great and the Hilton was a phenomenal place to stay.  It was a good idea.  Next time, it needs better planning.

And I'm still waiting for Optimist's rant.

20% of the world are dumbasses.  Don't let that 20% impact your outlook.

Ohio University has what, 20,000 students on the Athens campus?  That means a good 2,000 of them are complete dumbasses.

Concentrate on the 80% who are wicked cool.

Don't be too hard on Ohio69's miscalculation.  He was being distracted at the time trying to supervise the 20% of the employees in his office who are dumbasses.

(BTW, it's hard to ignore the 20% who are dumbasses.  They seem to make their presence known in a way the 80% can't match.)

Stop it, Pete! Now!  BTW, love the image of one of my all-time favorite BB coaches (even though his choice of a college to play for and coach totally sucks!).

Jeff, watch your tongue if you're headed for the Convo!  And consider "silly butts" in future posts.

Started thinking today about former Temple Coach Chaney's confrontation with Calipari and that got me all fired up, Pete!  So I threw caution to the wind and said that three letter word...

Interesting note I almost forgot about: despite the ad touting free wifi, and being told outlets would be available on the buses, neither of these things proved true.

Yeah I was disappointed to find that out. I feel like a total d-bag complaining about a $40 trip that provided me with my only opportunity to go to New Orleans and watch the game, but I still don't like being lied to. The no outlets or wifi kind of sucked. They shouldn't have advertised it unless they were 100 percent sure the buses were properly equipped. Thank God I had a fully charged iPod and others had some DVDs to watch.

Also as Dragon said, the number of stops we made was ridiculous. The itinerary called for three stops on the way down. We made seven. Every one of the stops seemed extremely disorganized. We never knew if we were allowed off the bus or not. Our chaperone usually told us to not get off just so we could get back on the road sooner, but it seemed other chaperones didn't follow orders and let everyone off at every stop. It took forever to load everyone back up, especially if we stopped at a gas station and everyone went in to buy snacks and drinks. That's why Dragon's bus had to wait so long at the Louisiana rest stop less than 50 miles from the city.
