Has there been any consideration to move Phil Bates from QB to RB?  Or at least to some type of slash/wildcat?  I'm really not looking forward to him under center for >10% of the snaps.

He is a great athlete. I would love having him as a running back and get a shot at the pros,  or even as a wide receiver. However, I wonder if he wasn't promised the quarterback job? Hope not.

Obviously not the job. Perhaps the oportunity to play it out at QB. Still like Bates at QB with a better OL and established threats deep, middle and short. QBs are like coaches they get better as the team around them improves.

I think Phil is a bigger threat at the QB spot in a wildcat; running, throwing, option etc.  At RB, he becomes another one trick pony.  Makes opponents game planning very difficult

Considering Ohio is not an option team, I think having our starting QB have a quarterback rating of around 12.3 is a huge mistake.  I'm not sure where to use Phil, but under center for the majority of the snaps would be incredibly painful to watch.  I cringe just thinking about it.

if Bates is our full time QB next year all opposing defensive coordinators should put 11 in the box against us. I dont think he could hit a wide open receiver with no defender.

I to will find it hard for Frank to stay with Phil unless his passing accuracy improves. Frank will not make decisions long term that will hurt the team. Let's remember he has taken a long term approach to our program and now that we have won 8 games for 2 consecutive years he won't chance a step backwards.
Even with what appears as an easy shcedule for next year he will make the right decisions.
The entire starting O-Line is back next year, great news for our QB situation, not to mention our best offensive player.
Frank stated many time that Phil was not playing a full strength this season and just maybe that was part of the cause for his play not being all that great. If it was his legs that were the problem, that may have impacted his speed, which could would have greatly impacted his performance.
Spring practice will be interesting to see and hear Franks comments.

Didn't we win 9 games last season?

Bates has not yet shown it, has not played at a level that gives one to believe that he can throw it.  Either he develops or we go to option B (which should integrate his running/wildcat skills as was done reasonably well in the middle of the season).

We need to develop or find or whatever some impact players.  Didn't have a single one this season--no one who made his mark over a good number of games.  Can rise no higher without a good number of such studs.

We need to get used to playing at a MUCH higher level.

Losing to Toledo, stupd cow, kents, Troy--not acceptable.

He might not be able to hit an open receiver, but he did hit Franshaw a couple of times when Franshaw had a defender draped all over him, including as I recall for Bates' only TD pass and Franshaw's only TD reception of the year.  Still, 9 for 23 with 3 INTs isn't going to convince anyone that they have to defend the pass.  He's strictly an option QB (and does it well) and unless he does a lot of work between now and Sept, that's what he'll be come fall.  I'm afraid it will be up to Tettleton, Snyder and Roback to find Brazill, Dunlop, Thompson and the rest next season.

I agree with most of the comments here.  I'm worried about Bates as QB next year, and I think he is better suited to RB or for use in Wildcat (we should call them Bobcat) formations.  I'm a little afraid that Bates may be one of those guys who plays better in practice than he does in game situations, particularly in the throwing department.  I'm also worried that what I understand is Frank's close friendship with Bates' father might cloud his judgement a little bit.  On the other hand, Frank isn't going to stick with something that doesn't work for the long term.  I'm hoping that in the Spring game we'll see either Roback, Snyder or Tettelton step up and be the very clear winner. My bets are on Roback. But what do I know? According to some on this board my football IQ is zero, so probably not much.

Didn't Iowa State convert him to outside Linebacker? With his athletic ability, that position might be his best shot at the NFL.

All this speculation is useless until at least the Spring game, then we will at least have seen Bates go against Tettleton and Snyder and thus will have a much better understanding of who is doing the best and who the coaches' seem to favor.

Wide Receiver

See... that's where I think his money could be made. With his bulk and ability to break tackles, I think he would be an excellent slot receiver. Possession receiver who's still a major deep threat.
