The school's all-time leader in TD passes is at your disposal . This is the guy who has led us to victory each of our eight wins. Your senior QB who bleeds green, in his last game as a Bobcat. And you don't start him?

No disrespect to Phil Bates. He's a heck of a runner, but he is no passing threat. The offense is not inventive, and we do not move the ball.

The fact that Boo had three TD passes was even more sickening. We had the capability of competing with this team, so I don't want to talk about our defense. I knew Troy was going to score a lot of points, and if Ohio could have beaten them in a shootout, we would have called it a great game. You can say the same thing about the basketball team's loss.

Someone owes Boo a fat apology.

Something tells me Mr. Bates earned his chances. I do understand what the coaches wanted to do, run the ball, run the clock, play keep away from Troy. Mr. Bates earned his chance to see if he could make that happen. His interception was not underthrown, I thought the receiver slowed on the route. LB would have been still running with it. Next year. Stll need to be bigger stronger and faster. Still work to be done. As MonroeClassmate pointed out, this has happened to OSU at the hands of Florida, this has happened to Florida at the hands of Nebraska, this has happened to Nebraska at the hands of USC. It happens, learn from it and get better.

It didn't help Boo that he had little to no practice time this past week.

It's not like Bates looked good with all that practice.  At least Boo moved the ball every time he was on the field.  That was obvious from the 34 yard TD strike on the first series.

Boo was better than Bates last night, for sure.  But clearly Troy's defense was in prevent mode the 2nd half.  And even at that we had trouble moving the ball.  No one played well offensively last night for Ohio, other than Paul Hershey.

Starting Bates over Boo was the dumbest move I seen in years from Bobcat coaches. There had to be some kind of disciplinary reason for it, otherwise we have the worst coaching staff in the history of Ohio football.

What was the official reason/explanation for Boo's "benching"? I saw in the AP article it was for missing some practices to clear up some academic issues. What does that mean?

Just back from NO.  Had a nice time and will post some more later but here is what I really do not understand...

OK, the game plan was to RUN the ball with Bates at QB so Troy would have the ball less.  Well, when your first possessions end up in nothing and the other team is rattling off points in every possession, don't you realize you are in a shootout and need to adjust?  Don't you realize that at 24-7 or 31-7?  It's hard to believe sitting at that game that you would think a running QB gave us a chance to win.  Having a game plan is one thing but sticking with it when it is leading to failure is plain foolish.

As others have said and most on those board have seen, Boo gives our offense options.  In my opinion, he gave us the best chance to compete or win and for whatever reason we decided not to use himuntil the game was out of hand.

I have also said on this board more than once that six years into a program, you should be developing some 4 year QB's.  Seems like the best QB's in Ohio are still going to any school but Ohio.

Good night!

I'm clearly vocal on Bates not being ready.  But when he was on field along with Boo and used as a 'jet sweep' option, that seemed to open up the field for us.  Anyone know how many times we used this look in the last two games?

Not saying it should be used as our standard offense.  But it did seem to make defenses have to react to us..instead of leaving us in our easy-to-guess base offense.

Very well put Slavin....has this coaching staff ever heard of bubble screens, wide receiver screens, or just a plain screen,,,maybe a slant or two...this coaching 101 when the other team is bringing the house.....this was the poorest coached game that I ever saw.....

Boo didn't start because the staff wasn't even sure he would be eligible to play . You want to blame someone blame your senior QB who couldn't/wouldn't make sure he had his house in order. One can affect an entire team

As others have said, the game plan was to run the ball a lot. Also as noted, it wasn't happening. That was disappointing. Most teams have ran the ball quite well against Troy, but we couldn't. I don't think this was a bad game plan to try to use Bates often as a runner. I thought this would be the case, and I didn't think Troy would be able to stop it, but obviously they were quite prepared.

Frank is kind of stubborn when it comes to game plans. He's talked before about coaches not having enough patience and abandoning their game plan too soon, and then things just get worse. I think everyone pretty much is in agreement, though, that in this case, he probably stuck to the original too long when it wasn't working.

That seems plausible--kind of what I suspected might be happening. Still doesn't explain our defensive melt down. Giving up 38 in the first half pretty much nullfies an offensive tactic based on a running, ball-control scheme.

For what it's worth, I heard exactly the same criticism of Bill Hess back in the day.

It remains beyond my comprehension how anyone saw this (us) as a team capable of running the ball consistently.  We struggled with the run offense all season and the yards we did gain usually came on big plays, a la Bates around the corner, option, etc.  I distinctly remember where we sat after the OOC sched and Toledo - our running game was non-existent.  Same at Kent.  I simply do not get it.  Nice idea, though.

We should have a better running game next year IF:

*Harden can play all year.

*the offensive line improves and doesn't digress.

*they play Boykin.

*newcomers like transfer Blankenship and true freshman Hammonds provide some depth.

Doc, why do you think we didn't run Boykin more this year?  I know he had that one crucial fumble, but overall I thought he brought a lot to the running game.  Once he got up a head of steam and even a small hole to run through he was very hard to bring down, often dragging tacklers with him after contact for additional yardage.  I remember some saying that he didn't block well on passing plays, but you'd think he could be "coached up" to improve in that area.  Was there, perhaps, some discipline issues?  I thought as the season progressed we'd see more and more of Boykin but it actually went the other way.  He practically disappeared.  One of the many mysteries in my mind about the 2010 Bobcats.

I would sure like to know if BOO's academic issue was the reason why he didn't play much in the first half.
My mind says that was the reason. There is no other explanation. After all, when he did come in for Bates due to an equipment issue in the 1st quarter, he threw that TD and the game was tied. That alone should have solidified his position.
I don't know if we will ever know what the reasoning was but it would sure answer 1 question.

I have been wondering this all year... I can't figure it out... if it was the pass blocking then put him in only in running situations... we didn't seem to have much of an issue tipping our hands as to whether we were running or passing when we rotated QBs in and out almost exclusively for run or pass situations...

Not seeing more of him may have been my biggest disappointment of the season...

Hopefully we get a good look at him next year...

I doubt there are many coaches that know more about what is a great running back than coach Solich. He was a special one himself and coached some of the best while a position coach at Nebraska.  Probalbly want to defer to his judgement in this area.
