There'll be a football reference in a second that will make this somewhat topical, but I've noticed a remarkably distressing lack of "court awareness" about the actual academic process of this or any university from far too many vocal posters. Yes, I understand this is an athletics-related message board, but we're talking about university athletics. And for so many people to be so utterly confused about academia, the day-to-day lives/responsibilities of professors, etc., is really depressing. I'm not saying you need to respect them, which many of you clearly don't; what I'm saying is that at baseline you should understand them and what they do and how much they truly have to deal with. And I don't even mean the vocal few who are taking anti-athletic views. I'm talking any of them, because they get lumped together so often/easily. If the number of posts misunderstanding academia were paying season ticket holders, there'd be enough to fill five Peden Stadiums.

I always find it hard to empathize with people and groups who complain but offer no solutions. Unfortunately, when it comes to OUr faculty that's what often gets an airing on this board.

I understand and respect your plea but I'm not sure I understand your assumption.  It's true that often the negative talk here is of faculty who want to diminish, if not destroy, athletics, but I don't view that as an attack on academia. We disparage a lot of coaches, teams and players here, too, but I don't think we intend to demonize their collective pursuits.  It's about individuals and individual circumstances.

Bobcat JH,

You've been a poster here for a long enough time to recognize:
                   1. Many of our posters are experts on everything
                   2. Many have no problem expressing their ignorance (me included)
                   3. Miami does indeed suck

Of those three only one matters and I think we can all agree on that.

Relax and read the threads.

+1 on this. As a PhD student, it can be quite frustrating to read some of the misinformation on this board. It's sad that many people that attend college leave without an understanding of what a professor is and what their responsibilities are when they aren't teaching. As a TA, I've learned that the students have no idea that I am taking other courses, doing original research, etc... I'm just the guy that grades their homework. Most people on this board fit into this category.

-1 for over generalization.  Did they teach you in your research methods classes anything about doing the proper level of investigation before drawing broad conclusions?  Also, most scholars know that it's much safer to qualify assertions when one is using a "seat of the pants" research protocol rather than something more objective -- like a content analysis of a random sample of posts over a specific time period or fitting certain objective criteria.  Perhaps you should have said something like: "From my observation, it appears to me that at least some folks on this board occasionally forget that college professor have job responsibilities beyond the classroom."  Now that's probably a true statement, which might apply to your humble correspondent every now and then, though I was once myself a tenured professor.  That was a looong, looong, looooooong time ago!

The only three rules for posting on bobattack....so long as 'Miami' is understood to include 'kron, kents, beefs, and temples.
