I thought it might be fun to project which 5 first year players are going to make their presence known this season. Frosh (RS or true), JUCOs, Transfers, etc... are all up for grabs. Here are my choices in no particular order:

1.) Jamaal Tarrent - I could have gone the easier route with Kozak but I'll go out on a limb and choose Tarrent instead. He looked to be on the field a bit in the spring game and with our losses up front I expect he'll play as a reserve.  Also, we rotate dudes in and out a lot on the defensive front in general.

2.) Mose Denton - It seems like the reaction thus far has been pretty good to his performance. We lost a few guys from last season in the defensive backfield (is Kenny Jackson gone for good?) so Mose may be expected to contribute from game 1.

3.) Anthony Grady - The last few years we have been recruiting several fast and slightly undersized linebackers. Jovon Johnson and Jelani Woosley also fit into this category. To get some more speed onto the defensive side of the ball, I expect we'll see some of Grady this season.

4.) Derek Roback - Based on what we've seen thus far, it seems that Roback is too gifted an athlete not to find his way onto the field somehow. He seemingly has the potential to be an excellent pass catching TE and should make it on to the rotation regardless of our current depth at the position.

5.) Derrius Vick - Complete wild guess, but I'm hoping (praying) that this guy is the obvious favorite for QB when he arrives. He's fast, athletic and has a decent arm. Not to mention he is tall enough to see over our lineman.

Honorable mention: Beau Blankenship, Chase Cochran, Landon Smith, Bryce Dietz, Antawn Crutcher

Tarrent is in an area of need so he definately would be in my top 5.

We need a pass rusher and Kozak might be the best one we've had in a while.

RB has recently been a "snake bit" position with runners mia for reasons ranging from grades to injuries to off field problems.  I'm not a psychic but I would be surprised if we didn't lose someone.  Therefore Blankenship may become a difference maker because of need.

This is a great thread. Very interesting to see what people think on this topic.

Here are my five first year difference makers:

Kyle Kozak, Beau Blankenship, Jamaal Tarrent, Derek Roback, Andrew Bennett

Also expect Crutcher and Kyle Hammonds to get on the field as true freshmen.

If we have five first year guys who make a significant difference, well, combine that with who we project to have back and we will be ranked.

Guess I have to adjust my thinking. Have always thought of difference makers as LB or NK types. Teams who have five on the whole team will be champions.

Mike, I hope you are right about Chase Cochran. If so, given the other WRs returning Landon Smith should redshirt. Chase and LB should be deep threats and the shorter routes will require blocking fools with good hands.

Five new guys on the OL that will either push the incumbents or take their jobs.  No more Kent or Troy manhandling of the line of scrimmage.

We have relied too much on a shifty Theo Scott and Boo Jackson luckily zigging when they needed to zig and zagging when they needed to zag in avoiding too much pressure.  I want to see big holes for the running backs and clean pants on the QB's who are able to step back in the pocket and count to 4 alligator every play for 14 games in 2011.

Happy Easter and you folks down along the river good luck!
