I hope not. Because the only direction we can go is down to I-AA or FCS or whatever its called now.

People keep saying we should leave the MAC, so I have to ask this question. Where would we go?

Unless the perceived quality of the program (recruiting, quality wins, butts in the seats, etc.) improves to the point where the Big East would consider us, there is no where to go. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't explore options. The world changes. If the Big 12 had imploded last year like everyone thought it would, the conference landscape would have been shaken up enough that maybe there would have been an opportunity to move somewhere new and better (from both quality of product and profitability perspectives). Just because it didn't happen then doesn't mean it couldn't happen in the future, and if it does, we need to be prepared to be in the best position possible.

There are some issues with the MAC but I think you have to compare where the league was 15 years ago with respect to TV exposure and access to bowl games to where it is today and where things could be in another 15 years. Based on some of the moves made over the last year (including this UMass thing), the gap between the MAC and the best non-BCS conferences (MWC, CUSA) has decreased and the MAC has furthered the gap between it and the SBC and WAC. This is going to help the MAC in the pecking order when it comes to bowl games, sagarin ratings ect. I'd feel differently about the MAC if it had just lost 4-5 schools to the Sun Belt or something where we getting left behind and out of the shuffle but that is not the case.

I'm not saying we shouldn't keep our options open. But wouldn't the options have to make us better off? I assume a move would also include a step up in competition. And since we're not exactly dominating where we are, how would we do in a tougher conference? And what would a move, say to the Big East, do to our travel budget? I'm all for doing what's best for our prorgrams, but what would make sense for us?

Uncle Wes, I think one could argue that the MAC has gotten weaker visa a via C-USA in the last decade. I can remember a year not too long ago when the MAC was 5-0 during the regular and bowl season against C-USA. Recently, we haven't done nearly as well.

There are two ways OU can get the attention of larger conferences: schedule more Big 6 schools and beat them; or whip the living tar out of all the MAC opponents and smash the bowl opponent. This season offers a place to start. If they go 13-0 this year with a 14-point average margin of victory, they'll get noticed. Even 11-2 with 9-0 in the MAC and win by a 14-17 point avg would help. But they need to do that sort of thing 3-5 years in a row to be taken seriously by the bigger boys. OU's enrollment isn't that much smaller than WVU or VATech, and Athens is similar to Morgantown and Blacksburg in size and rurality. So it's not impossible for OU to move up. They just need to show that they can compete with the big guys or at least have outgrown the MAC.

We are not going to the Big East. People need to put that dream to rest. I agree, we cannot wait for an opportunity, but rather we need to prepare for it. If/when the Big 12 implodes, it is going to impact Conference USA, which could open slots for Ohio and a few others. Let's begin to form an alliance now. Let's schedule home and homes in football and basketball with the likes of Memphis, UAB, Tulane, and UCF - in addition to lower end BCS schools (and also give up the pipe dream of getting Bama, PSU, etc to Athens).
