Not surprising.  Fully warranted.  It will not impact the penalties from the NCAA.  He will not be the only head to roll.

Does this mean that the state of Ohio is losing its best pro team?

No.  Just the coach of the best pro team in the state.  Sadly, they could still beat the Browns and Bengals after the suspensions are served.

Even though I think his resignation was the right thing to do, I really have mixed feelings about Tressel.  I think he is probably a good man who got caught up in the arrogance of Big 6 programs.  In this instance, he put his principles aside to protect star players -- something no coach should do.  I wonder if he would've done the same thing for second or third stringers.  And the players' actions, at least, didn't deserve protection.  After all, it's not like they sold the stuff to get necessities (food, clothing, rent).  Who the hell needs a tattoo?

And this may be the tip of the iceberg.  Unfortunately, Tressel will likely be the fall guy for Smith and the others who should really be going.

he did the same thing at Youngstown State, so I don't see this as getting caught up in a Big 6 thing.  It is just a Tressel thing and an OSU thing.  They can now take their rightful place in the Vegas, USC, Bama, Auburn, FSU, etc. role call of the guilty.

Just a question to anyone out there that might know!  I heard on the radio that FB players at OSU receive a stipend of $12,400 if they live in off campus housing to pay expenses and if they are there over the summer an additional $4,000.00 is given.  Do our FB players receive a stipend for living off campus?  I assume this would also apply to all athletes!?  Just interested in knowing for my own sake.

I'm fairly sure this is standard.  If a player lives off campus, they get a stipend equal to either the average cost of living in the town, or whatever it would have cost to keep them in the dorms.

I am sure there is much fire where this smoke exists.

But the shame of it is many at OSU and their fans will make Pryor out to be the villain when Tressel is guilty and dug his own grave.

The stipend is equal to the amount of living in the dorms with a meal plan at the out of state rate, which is the maximum allowable.  Not all sports are equal, but in any sport where a full scholarship is awarded this would be standard practice.

The guy has been a dust ball of trouble following him for years.  Puts out a great front though.

Just a question here, when everyone is guilty is there still a crime?  There seems to be no shame in this for any of the big name programs.  Sanctions do not seem to dim fan support, ticket sales or merchandise.  Offenders are welcomed back with open arms.

Yes, a bowl suspension might affect recruiting on some level but as has been dicussed here ad nauseum, the financial hit from that is not as big as it seems either.

Probably have a lot of people call me crazy here, but I think its time to get out the ol' TV ban stick again.  Get the conference to pull a prorated portion of their TV money for football from their distribution each year, too.

Agree, not only pull TV money, but pull their games from TV - if they can not be on TV, recruits will shy away.  If they can not be on TV, the cable channels and networks lose money because ratings drop (theoretically) and advertising dollars are reimbursed.  TV then has a vested interest in keeping programs clean.  Couple this (loss of TV money and exposure),  with loss of scholarships and the penalty becomes severe.  Of course, ESPN, the Big Ten Network (and conference), the new Texas Network, etc would have to buy into this - like they would put their ethics ahead of money.

Actually that might be the way to reimplement the TV ban for a modern era. The reason that TV bans are no longer really issued is a feeling that they punish Team A's opponent (we'll call them Team B) for Team A's transgression. If you denied Team A their share of the TV money (or some portion there of) it starts to hit them where it counts, without affecting Team B

Colin Cowherd said that this has a "Frank Solich vibe" to it regarding where Tressel goes from here because of his age, he's not an NFL coach, and most likely no BCS team would hire him.

Tressel doesn't need to make money, but at 58, I'm sure he will find something productive to do.  It may very well not be in coaching.

Interesting that Solich's name has come up in connection with this. In my informal, unscientific poll of osu fans at a family cookout yesterday, almost all of them said they would like to see Solich as the new coach.

I think TS was indicating it seems possible Tressel lands at a non-BCS school, not Solich landing at OSU.

Yeah, I know. I was just throwing out a Solich-related thought since someone else mentioned Frank.

David Ridpath, Assistant Professor of Sports Administration at Ohio University, was part of the panel discussing the Jim Tressel situation on ESPN's Outside The Lines today.

The best monetary solution to all of this is to have OSU forfeit their football budget for a few years to the other state universities. Afterall, the state is in a budget crisis.
