It's nice that the MAC is held up as a postive example in this case. It indicates a genuine interest in amateurism as a foundation for its sports programs.

We're in some pretty good company on that list IMHO.

We unfortunately take our amateurism to the extreme in many ways. Like Ball State having the softball team change clothes in a parking lot because they can't provide a locker room. Or Ohio getting rid of administrative support for many sports. So much for the "learning workshop" or whatever it's called.

What it tells me is that Joe Pa's contribution to college football is vastly underrated. Not only is he the winningest coach ever in 1A, he also has the cleanest record. I read today that PSU is self-reporting a minor infraction because Joe Pa happened to stop by the weight room for a few minutes while some players were working out -- something he's not supposed to do until fall practice begins. Wonder how many programs at any level would self-report that.

I also noticed that two or three of the "innocents" (NWern, Stanford and maybe BC) focus more on academics than winning. Less pressure on coaches equates to cleaner programs.

And what does that get those teams? A big trophy? Increased TV exposure? Maybe you missed the last two trips to Evanston Illinois, but there were more people in a South Side Ghetto Bar than at the game. He'll even Oregon is having things surface about the past year, and they aren't 6 months removed from their run.

Joe PA has zero relevance in today's game, he'll his own alumni association has asked him to retire.

I love winning and I dream of being in a BCS game someday (will never happen because we simply don't have the fans) or making the Final Four, but any of that would be completely tainted if we were caught in a scandal or had no one graduate.

We complain about losing games that should have been won. We complain about few butts in the seats. We complain about lack of enthusiasm in the fan base. We even complain about the troubles at downtown bars. But at least (so far) we haven't had the kind of pall that has hung over "Buckeye Nation" the past six months and will be there for years.

I can't speak knowledgeably about Northwestern and BC, but I do know that at Stanford there is plenty of pressure on coaches. Indeed, Stanford hasn't been very patient with coaches who don't win big. (As I recall the school ranks first or second in all-time NCAA national team sport championships.) As to football I do believe it likely that Stanford has been spared some player behavior problems because of its adherence to its academic standards.

A friend of mine's son graduated from Stanford last year and got drafted into the NFL.
Stanford montiored his academics from the time he committed.They made sure he knew they didn't want a Senior Slump.
They were also up front with him about his choice of majors.
He originally wanted to go Pre-med.They told him that, even though he came from one of the best Catholic high schools in N.J.,with his grades and S.A.T. scores they didn't think he could handle both football and a Pre-med course load.
He took their advise,majored in Business and graduated in 4 years.

UCLA 107, Stanford 100, USC 93 and next is Oklahoma State 50 and Texas 48.
