Why in gods name are there 8 D1 football schools in the state of Ohio? Isn't it about time that someone gives it up and focuses solely on hoops? I'm looking at you Kent State!

It would be great for the Bobcats if one or more of these programs just went belly-up. Is there are chance this could happen? Are some of our in-state rivals dealing with the same athletic existentialism that we are?

Bottom Line: Go away Kent State! Stop beating us when you have nothing to play for. No one shows up to your games and your stadium could be sold nicely for scrap metal. And maybe take BGSucks with you. Oh, and give us all of your best players.

Hate to burst your bubble Paul, but since OU last won a MAC title, Toledo has won 8, Miami 7, BG 4, Akron 1 and Kent 1.  Seems like we're the only one with a zero of the MAC schools in Ohio.  Hopefully that will change this year.

We need the merger of Kent and Akron to form Kent Regional/Akron University - KrAkron.

We need Toledo to realize M*A*S*H* is pretty much forgotten by Generation Text and just meld into the NAIA. Klinger would approve.

Bowling Green? Take the money and dominate D1-AA. Evidently winning will increase attendance and excitement as has been espoused by the gentry here.

Miami (OH) [USA] can stay because herpes is forever.

Ohio's a football state; look no further than the location of the NFL Hall of Fame. Unfortunately we have had very few nationally successful programs. Outside of A&M, no one else has been able to step into, and remain in the spotlight. We don't compete like the state of Texas, California, or Florida because of the unnecessary drain of resources and fan support all these programs cause.

I want the Governor (Kasich) to step in and merge the programs mentioned in the posts above. It is his place because they ultimately impact the tax payer by remaining a critical risk to the academic bodies they represent. And as most of us know "the people" are willing to go no-holds-barred when they feel we're in an "economic crisis".

I'd love to see Kent/Akron and BG/Toledo merge from the outside looking in...But can you imagine that if you were a fan of one of those schools?  Imagine that Miami was nearby, say in Logan or something...We would hate them the same if not more, then one year we are told we are merging with them?  Yuck.

Merging those schools is perhaps the worst idea. They are not only unique institutions, but they have character (if we like it or not) that defines part of this state. 8 DI schools, lest we forget to throw Dayton and YSU in there as they aren't FBS schools. Bottom line is, we need to recruit better as a confrence and get more recognition. State has made their mistake and it will only help the MAC.

There once was a school of thought that the MAC schools were held down by A&M's refusal to schedule us.  The logic is that Ohio (the political entity) could be the next Texas or CA with a host of balanced DI programs if only A&M would defer, spread the wealth and the spotlight.  Well, defer they did and we still can't pull close to even.  We have no one to blame but ourselves.  The MAC has two shots again this year.  Could this be it?

This is an entirely frustrating response. Saying that A&M is finally sharing the spotlight and spreading the wealth is like locking your little brother up in a dungeon for decades and then searching for vindication when he can't take down you and your suit of armor. All the MAC schools play them on the road, as if it wasn't already an uphill fight.

UD doesn't give out scholarships. They are a glorified D3.

They still play DI football, granted no scholarships, but they are DI. Maybe they would up the ante if they had a chance.

Part of the problem here is keeping good Ohio players in Ohio.  I went through the Michigan and MSU rosters and found 46 Ohio kids on those two rosters alone.  That's enough for a whole team.  Just about every Big Tedozen school has 10-15 Ohio kids on their roster; so does ND.  I know you can't keep em all here, but if only half of them wanted to stay in Ohio, the state's MAC teams would likely be doing much better.

We will get by.

I agree, and Ohio should be able to recruit well with PA, WV, and KY as per our location, even VA perhaps.
