I guess I must be out of touch with reality but after reading the results of the poll (4 to 1 in favor of this), I'm truly confused.  If I was a school board member I would instruct our superintendent to make sure that this doesn't happen.  This makes a mockery of the whole situation.  Unbelievable!

It has nothing to do with what he's done at Ohio State. It's all about what he's done for high school football.

"Nemec said much of what Tressel did for high school football players went unnoticed. He said when former Roosevelt player Benny Cowgill lost an arm to cancer, Tressel invited him to Youngstown State to learn placekicking. When Roosevelt lineman Ryan Anderson was diagnosed with cancer last spring, Tressel had his players join him in sending more than 90 hand-written notes of encouragement to Anderson."

I thought the same thing when I heard it on the radio this morning.

Is Bernie Madoff Day is the following week?

So I guess it's o.k. to lie and cheat and embarrass your employer as long as you do enough good things?  I don't buy it and you shouldn't either.

Not saying I agree. Just giving their rationale.

If that's true, then great... I'm sure he's done some good things for lots of people, but isn't the timing a little interesting? Of all the times and all the years and all the coaches they can honor, they choose Tressel now?

I would say the timing is geared to support the man at this time for a reason. Don't forget, the family has been big in the Ohio Coaching ranks for 60 years.

I will never understand the blind worship of TOSU football.

I will enjoy another excuse for ESPN - PTI to rip on TOSU for another 60 seconds.....

This has nothing to do with OSU, it is the High School Coaches Association, no affiliation with OSU.

You need look no further than the fact that the majority of the posters don't know the difference between they're & their or your & you're to understand the blind worship.

My take on the Coach responses is that they're all afraid to burn the A&M recruiting bridge...

...and don't even throw "there" and "yore" into the mix. It only gets worse if they need to cite a site that happens into their sight, though they occasionally choose correctly between to, two, and too.

I can think of no better way to burn that bridge than to honor a guy who, at the end, brought O$U dishonor, disgrace and punishment (couldn't think of an appropriate "dis").  If they want to honor what he and his family have done for  high school football, name a humanitarian award or something after him and his dad, but don't pressure coaches into honoring him on the field.

Well said.  I sent an email to the superintendent of the Solon school system (that's where the instigator of this crazy idea is the head coach) asking him to squash this crazy idea.  I'll let you know what he says if he writes back.

Attaboy, Al.  I applaud your actions.  That's twice in one week we've been on the same side.  Oldkatz had heart flutters and palpatations at the GWC board meeting when we voted together in the minority. This will probably cause him to have a severe anxiety attack and fear that the end of the world is near!

Al hold your breath on that one, the Superintendent is not putting anything into this, and has ZERO influence over this issue, and hopefully he will not waste taxpayer money on even responding to your request.

BC, why would answering Al's letter be a waste of taxpayer money?  The superintendent is a public employee and Al is a citizen of Ohio.  Seems to me you are taking a very high-handed approach here.  Also, to say that the superintendent has no influence over his head football coach is disingenuous, to say the least.  Sometimes I think you just like to hear yourself spout off.  Many times you have great insight and wisdom, but there are times when you just seem to be playing a game of one-up-manship.

Solon is behind this? That explains everything.

Solon is not behind this The OHSFCA is behind this, this was voted on by the membership, all 700+ member football playing schools voted for this. The coach frm Solon is neither an officer or Regional representative.

High school coaches wish to honor a man whose disgrace is illegally and unethically enticing a select few high school standouts to remain enrolled at his football school for the purpose of smashing other (presumably less talented) high school kids into submission in an amatuer athleic contest while simultaneously destroying the college careers of his charges?
Nice job, fellas!  Obviously there is an endless supply of sleazy HS coaches waiting for their chance.

The thing is that they (like everyone else) know it wasn't just Tressel that was in on this and as such they see his "forced retirement" for what it is...The last step in project A&M CYA...This is a ring kissing gesture...

The OHSFCA has nothing to do with this.  It is sponsored by the OTAA - Ohio Tattoo Artist Association.  I agree with many of the statements above.  Tressel is a teacher first and a coach second.  And the lessons he has taught the high school coaches are truly priceless.  He has taught them that winning is everything, even if you have to cheat to get there.  He has taught them that is okay to lie to their governing board (and perhaps their own school).  He has taught them to ignore their governing board when reprimanded and told their behavior and attention to issues is unacceptable.  He has taught them that keeping a player eligible to be on the field is more important than teaching right from wrong.  He has taught them that a driving player is a happy player.  He has taught them that boosters are a friend, even a partner.  And he has taught them that emails never really go away.

Perhaps they will take the honor a step further and all wear a stick-on tattoo of a heart with "Tressel" written inside of it.
