It's the freaking ball.

I'm not in the least bit kidding.  Two years ago we led the nation in takeaway margin.  That's a huge statistic.  Can make up for a lot of other sins.

Here's hoping we don't turn it over when we have it and we're ball hawks on defense and specials.

Turnovers are important, but I think the most important things are good old fashioned blocking and tackling.  Can't win consistently without executing the fundamentals flawlessly.

Agree 100% Monroe.  Take care of the ball, force turnovers, and you are going to win.

I've seen crazier things happen.

That is clearly why we lost the Kant game and a chance at NIU in the MACC last season, as I painfully watched on DVR recently.  I believe ten fewer INT's (which isn't a stretch) and even in fumbles v '10 will mean at least nine wins this season.

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

That is all true, however, think about how many missed stops we have witnessed because linebackers and defensive backs have been too focused on trying to force a fumble by slapping at the ball instead of wrapping up the ball carrier.
Blocking and tackling.  That's the ticket!

Disagree.  Even though I live in Los Angeles, I've seen almost all of the 'Cat games over the last few years.  I haven't seen us missing that many tackles because of ballhawking.  Nothing of significance.  Have you seen many--any?--threads or comments on here about that?

Of course nuts and bolts blocking and tackling is important.  But think about turnovers, special teams plays and penalties.  Compared to the basics of routine plays, these three facets are small in number.  But over-exaggerated in effect.

It's all about the ball.

It's all about the ball.

Rodman got it; can't score without it and the oppo can't score if you have it.

It's all about the ball.

Be the kings of no-turnovers and creating takeaways.

It's all about the ball.

A thread started by Monroe and titled "The most important thing" is the very definition of the word oxymoron.

If you read Phil Steele's magazine, he makes a pretty compelling case that Turnovers=Turnaround. Teams that take better care of the ball are more often than not the teams at the top of the standings.

Agree, but it's not necessarily cause and effect. Good ball control may also be a simple characteristic of winning.
