Prospects of Temple in Big East

I noticed that some Temple recruits are thinking that the school will be in the Big East during their careers at the school. I had not heard that such a prospect was coming anytime soon. Does anyone know what is happening with this?

Could just be a pipe dream of the Temple faithful, recruits, coaches and fans alike. Doesn't really speak very highly of the Big East though, if they are back to re-cycling schools they had previously kicked out. I guess in Temple's mind though they have probably accomplished all they can in the MAC. They have won how many MAC championships? I've lost count myself.

I've seen stories about this too. Perhaps it explains Temple's high number of early committments. I've read the question is how big the Big East wants to be, whether to expand to 10 or 12. It has seemed they really have looked to Conference USA for possibilities. I just don't see how that would really make the Big East a better conference, however.

If this does come to pass, it'll make my UCONN friend very happy! (She's been a bit depressed lately about her alma mater's prospects after TCU joins the league. If temple were to rejoin the BigE, it'd assure 1 team that all the current members will be better than)

I really don't see this happening. AQ football is all about money, which generally means attendance. Cincy had the lowest average attendance in Big Least football last year with just over 35,000. TCU averaged 42,000 in a 44,000 seat stadium. Temps' average attendance was 20,515 (although they would point to the 32,000 for the Villanova game to argue they could draw better out of the MAC and to the expected sellout for the PSU game to show what "big-time" opponents would do, even though both arguments rely on the opponents filling a big chunk of seats). Until they can draw like TCU does, any move to an AQ conference would be highly speculative.

By the way, I loved this quote from Wikipedia about the Al Golden Era at Temps: "In 2010, the Owls lost a crucial game to Ohio University which would have given them a potential MAC championship."

Big East bound?? I would bet against it. They are "big time" in their minds but in reality they bring nothing to the table for a BCS conference desperately seeking respect.

Yes Temple is looking to join a BCS conference. Is it the Big East? No one knows what if anything has been discussed but nearly 9 million dollars in improvements to the football facility are being planned so hopefully something is rumbling.

Please don't compare attendance figures with BCS schools.. Temple has to sell MAC schools coming to Philly If Big East schools came the attendance figure would be different..

30,000+ student body not including its regional and international campuses

300,000 alumni living within market
a 100 year history of football
an on campus 10,000 seat basketball arena
access to another 19,000 state of the art basketball arena
a top 7 all time team in NCAA basketball wins
access to one of the most storied basketball arenas in the US

Football Jim, if you're angry, jealous and unemployed, I can understand. But, if you really believe what you wrote, you're plain old rock-dumb. If thats the case you might even be unemployable in Wash DC too....

I was just trying to find old attendance numbers.. The actual Big East Years were probably 15k to 20k but I think in the mid 80's they at least averaged 30K....

If you are talking about Penn, maybe. Villanova has a student body of about 8,000 with a stadium capacity of about 12,000 and if thats putting folding chairs on the track.

Why exactly is Temple's OCC men's basketball schedule going to lead the big east to re-evaluate their decision to kick temple football out for being laughingly non-competitive?

Um, no. I don't think Temple was even in the top five most attended games last season.

And there's no indication the Big East is looking to expand in basketball. We're talking football. And you can be as selective as you like discussing the facts of Villanova, but they're already in the conference, giving them a huge in Temple doesn't have.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, the Temple game snuck in at #5 last year. The Owls drew 3,500 less than Buffalo. Maybe Buffalo should be in the Big East.

I don't remember who it was (and I'm too lazy to go searching for it), but a couple of months ago didn't one of these Temple posters actually try to make the argument that being in a major metro area like Philadelphia was a disadvantage as far as football attendance goes?

Yeah, I believe that was MH55, saying that because Philadelphia is such a large metro area, there is so much else to do that it detracts from their attendance and that's why Temple's average home attendance was only about 1,000 more than Ohio's. (And if you minus the Villanova game in which at least one-third of the attendance was from the "away" team, then they'd have had a lower attendance.)

Now he says what a big advantage it is because that's what's convenient for the particular argument he is trying to make.
