Just got an email to order HC tickets.  First one is $5, additional tickets are $10.  Homecoming just sold out.

Seriously? We just made plans to be in Athens for homecoming for the first time in many years. Even got a hotel room reserved. Now we're sold out of the game?  Wow.

The tickets aren't sold out, yet, it's just at those prices it will sell out.  A family of four coming to the game was looking at $120 in tickets - now they're looking at $35.

More discocunted tickets?  You'd think our athletic department is flush with cash.

There is no chance this adds enough extra butts in seats that normally wouldn't be there to offset the loss in ticket revenue due to the lower price.

This is just a plain old dumb idea.

I disagree.  With a 3:30 start and this game being on tv, these cheaper tickets will get folks out of the bars and down to Peden.  A $30 ticket wouldn't do that.

I'm not saying that this promotion is a good idea.  But what's the marginal cost for, say, another 2000 seats in the stands.  Let's assume that 1k of these tix are sold at $5 per and 1K at $10 per--avg price of $7.50.  So $7500 more revenue..against what marginal cost to provide for 2000 more attendees?

It could be argued that we'd be better not reducing the cost of the tix...which, for instance, could bring in 500 more fans at $30 per...so that's $15,000.

It's a balancing act.  I tend to favor that we get off to a great start and, in the two weeks before homecoming, push that as a reason to buy tix, regardless of the price...as we keep on slamming big W's.

How bout we never charge 30 bones a pop until we're a TCU-level program?

Wow, that's a crazy good deal. But, if I had already purchased my tickets at $30 a pop, I would be VERY upset. They have to be careful with these sorts of things.

I offer myself as an example to the contrary.  I'm a Miami grad who happened to move to Athens for work.  When I saw I could buy season tickets to a D1 program for my entire family for less than a hundred bucks, of course I jumped on it - even though it's the rival school of my alma mater. (I know, admitting this will make me real popular around here, I get it.)  And although I'm going to be keeping my mouth very quiet on 11/22, on four other Saturdays and one other weeknight I'm going to be in the stands supporting my home town team.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Jim Schaus and crew have studied this pretty carefully and determined there's a financial upside.

Bucho -- good to hear.  We need more like you.

SBH -- but ... I thought everyone on here knows way more than OU Athletics folks.....

I dig the homecoming tix price.  Even though I'm paying way more for my Tower tix....

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

Also a perception upside.  Since this is a tv game and it's homecoming, the last thing you want to see are empty seats.  At these prices you've eliminated the financial reason to stay home or in the bars.  The 3:30 start is an unknown if the parade starts at 10 like normal.  That's an extra 90 minutes of time between parade and game - an extra 90 minutes to lose interest or find something else to do.

I must be the only one who has a little faith that the Bobcats come into this game at 5-1 or 6-0.   With that record and decent weather I think the game sells out or very nearly does at $30 a ticket.  We've not been in that position in 40+ years so none of us know for sure what the crowd will look like but since Homecoming is almost always the most attended or 2nd most attended game to the opener, it's nearly guaranteed to be over 20,000.

If we fall flat on our face out of the gate and attendance looks like it will drop go ahead and discount tickets to get more people in the stands.   Give the guys a chance first!

Al, was there a limited time offer on this thing?  I have less of an issue if it runs until the season starts.

We want to be big time FBS football, let's act like it and charge for it.

What this tells me is that the ultimate goal is attendance, not revenue. There is no possible way to justify this financially...the numbers don't add up. You have to sell SIX TIMES as many tickets at $5 to break even with the $30 price. This will certainly bring more fans out, but not SIX TIMES as many.

That's not to say that there's anything wrong with valuing attendance over revenue. In fact, I'd say it's a good move to create a better atmosphere on Homecoming.

Or, it could be about building revenue over the long term by increasing attendance in the short term. Get butts in the seats for the Bobcats' magical 14-0 season featuring first-time ever MACC and bowl victories, and said butts may be hooked for life.

Kinda like the tobacco companies did it, and they're not hurting for cash.

The philosophy of selling cheap tickets to sporting events often is rooted in getting as many people in the door and figuring once they are in it will help concession sales. Schaus is familiar with how promotions are done in pro sports and i think we have to trust our judgement here with a 21,000 average for home saturday games in 2009. This will lead to greater revenues and parking. It will pump more money into the local economy via hotels and dining out.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

It will be nice for it to be absolutely packed. And I don't think there will be as much of a loss in revenue as some think when you add in concessions, parking, merchandise and those kinds of things.

The promotion runs until October 5.  I'll even go out further on a limb here and predict that you'll actually see scalping for this game.  Buy them now for $10, the walk up crowd will be looking at $30, sell them for $20 and make a tidy profit.  Who ever thought that there would be scalping at an OU game.

As for the 21,000 average in 2009, those were Tom Boeh numbers.

I'm talking about the 21,000 average for the four saturday home games in 2010.

Seriously I don't know about that. The numbers in this case were probably pretty accurate for the first 4 saturday home games. Boeh numbers are more of a factor later in the season when 11,000 crowds are forged to 15,000. Homecoming was almost 22,000 last year as reported. There is no reason why we shouldn't be able to put 25,000 in the house for these games and a solid 18-20k for midweek action.

There really is no purpose to buying season tickets anymore. I could see 6 home games for $30, instead of paying the face value + my OBC donation.

Seriously, it's completely ridiculous that the loyal season ticket holders are the ones that are getting the financial shaft with these ticket giveaways.

Let's be honest, the only reason to buy season tickets is to ensure your place in line when all these big attraction programs come to town.

Do I really need to buy season tickets to watch Gardner Webb and Norfolk State? Pretty sure I can walk up and get myself in on the cheap if I want.

I guess I needed them for UCONN a couple years back? NOPE. Those were $5 as well.

This really is crap and I'm sick of paying an extra couple hundred dollars when the general public is getting everything at depressed prices. There's just no upside for me to keep doing it.

The important thing is for everyone to complain.  Concentrate on the immediate impact on you.  It's all about you.  It's not at all about enjoying the ride.

I simply cannot believe that you were not consulted or allowed to make this decision on your own.

By "you" here I mean you, not someone else.

The whining here is what matters.
