Marshall’s fall camp role call goes horribly awry with 10 signees missing

bueller

(/chuckle)

Marshall already has what appears to be a brutal 2011 schedule with games against West Virginia, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Central Florida, Houston and Southern Miss.

Now, they’ll have to go about it with a much thinner roster.

According to the Charleston Gazette, 10 of Marshall’s 29 players who signed a Letter of Intent to play for the Herd this year were absent from the preseason camp roster. Some of the no-shows are thought to be academic casualties. They are:

  • receiver Chris Alston
  • running back Steward Butler
  • receiver Levern Jacobs
  • receiver Conelius Jones (left the program after spring)
  • lineman Jamar Lewter
  • athlete DeAndre Reaves
  • defensive back Deontae West
  • defensive end Robert Mincey
  • JUCO lineman Colin Munro
  • JUCO defensive end Terry Franklin

Marshall was already operating through spring practices on a depleted roster, with head coach Doc Holliday working with as little as 40-50 players at times because of graduation and injuries.

Looks like my second favorite college football team is in for a tough year.  The thing that irks me the most is the fuel that this gives the jerks from Morganhole.  Just look at the comments below this article

Each fall I bleed two shades of green . . . Go  Herd!  GO OHIO!

Good one, Doc!

That other "Doc" was supposedly hired in Huntington because of his recruiting skills.  Makes one wonder.

Wow, not good for the Herd. Bad for on-field performance and also bad for publicity. If this happened in Athens, the athletics-bashers would be all over it.

By comparison, the only Ohio recruit not listed on the roster is Brad Spivey. And for those wondering, Temple has four recruits not listed on the fall roster.

Half a story that any effort would have revealed was really no story at all.
Only 1 of the ten was expected to enroll under scholarship in the fall.
Marshall is grey-shirting a bunch, and others will go prep or enroill as non-qualifiers.
One guy started last spring and dropped out to be closer to home.
Apparently one guy is still trying to get eligible and still at JUCO.
You can only enroll 25 anyway so the 29 was an impossible number to begin with.

You obviously havent been to Huntington in a good while or simply havent been there period.  We had a little problem with some Detroit area people coming down a while back but that has been taken care of for a while now. Huntington is a nice town and its finally back to growing again.

The guy writing that original article out of Charleston (Smock) obviously had no clue what he was talking about. In this article Chuck McGill has the "Facts" about the Herds roster in this two page article. Its a really good read:

http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/201108041513

"Coach Doc Holliday's Herd had its full allotment of 25 initial scholarship student-athletes report Thursday for the start of preseason camp, which begins today with a pair of split-squad practices.

Football Bowl Subdivision programs are limited to 25 initial scholarships per recruiting class (and 85 overall), and the two dozen and one who reported Thursday makes for an impressive list that is arguably more decorated than what media and recruitniks saw back in February on National Signing Day.

ESPN ranked February's class as tops in Conference USA and one of the eight best of non-BCS conference programs"

See you guys on the 17th. OhioCatFan, as the date gets closer I'll try and get in touch with you. I'll be coming up to the game and I'd like to stop by and say Hi. Hope all is well.

Go Herd!

WAM, c'mon man...I work in Huntington, and I'll defend it when necessary, but you're painting too rosie a picture here. It's not a complete "sh*thole", but that Detroit thing was more than "a little problem"...it was a crack-fueled gang war, complete with shootings in the middle of downtown. And if by "growing" you mean "getting a Roosters," then sure, Huntington is growing. But if you think any "growth" will be long-lived in the face of an anti-growth city tax policy and state regulatory scheme, you're kidding yourself.

Go Bobcats.

You obviously haven't been OUT of Huntington in awhile? A "nice town?" It's the most obese city in the country. Last time I was there (2 years ago) the people were some of the rudest I've ever met. Also, it is NOT growing. It lost 4.5% of its population in the past decade and has been losing people since the 1950s.

A Gallup Poll? So people think that Evansville is the fattest? I don't know what you are referring to in regards to reality TV but I'm talking about this:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27697364/ns/health-health_care/t/w-virginia-town-shrugs-being-fattest-city/

I take that back. I had no idea there was a reality show but this article mentions it:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1263142/Burgers-big-dustbin-lids-coffins-need-cranes-obese-children-having-heart-attacks--supersized-US-town-causing-Jamie-Oliver-despair.html

Even the brits know you're fat.

In the end Huntington (~50 percent) has a much higher obesity rate than Evansville (~38 percent). The reason it didn't make it into that Gallup poll was probably because it's not a large enough city. They probably kept it to cities above some arbitrary number (maybe 100,000?) to keep the study manageable.

Honestly, what purpose does it serve to have this discussion? I'm quite sure if Jaime Oliver went to visit Athens county schools he would discover similar obesity problems and stubborn behavior. So why pick on Huntington?

You're right. My apologies to WAM. I'm sure you're very happy in Huntington. I have just harbored a dislike for Huntington for awhile. Like I mentioned my only experiences in Huntington have been poor ones.
