Bill Connelly does great work on college football statistical analysis at FootballStudyHall.com. He published target rates and catches for all receivers through 5 games: http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2011/10/4/2468064/data-sharing-targets-and-catches-through-five-weeks

Below are the stats for Ohio receivers. These are based upon stats in the play-by-plays so I'm guessing the Leftwich stats really belong to Bates. Just for giggles, I checked out Mohamed Sanu. He's been targeted on 69 of the team's 159 targets (43.4%).

Offense Player Targets Catches Yards CatchRate YdsPerTarget Team Targets Target Rate
Ohio LaVon Brazill 36 24 332 66.7% 9.2 157 22.9%
Ohio Donte Foster 19 12 134 63.2% 7.1 157 12.1%
Ohio Riley Dunlop 16 12 172 75.0% 10.8 157 10.2%
Ohio Ryan Boykin 14 13 88 92.9% 6.3 157 8.9%
Ohio Phil Bates 13 9 138 69.2% 10.6 157 8.3%
Ohio Bakari Bussey 11 6 56 54.5% 5.1 157 7.0%
Ohio Jordan Thompson 11 8 94 72.7% 8.6 157 7.0%
Ohio Donte Harden 8 5 58 62.5% 7.3 157 5.1%
Ohio Mario Dovell 6 3 68 50.0% 11.3 157 3.8%
Ohio Jerry Gross 5 2 15 40.0% 3.0 157 3.2%
Ohio Landon Smith 5 2 16 40.0% 3.2 157 3.2%
Ohio Beau Blankenship 4 3 19 75.0% 4.8 157 2.5%
Ohio Tyler Futrell 4 2 33 50.0% 8.3 157 2.5%
Ohio Zac Clark 3 2 27 66.7% 9.0 157 1.9%
Ohio Octavius Leftwich 2 1 8 50.0% 4.0 157 1.3%

It's pretty good how well the ball is spread around. That's a lot of guys with catches.

Sanu's numbers are incredible. He's also caught just shy of 50 percent of Rutgers' completions, so you could make a case maybe they should try to get the ball to him even more. Passes thrown to other receivers are less likely to be completed even though it's somewhat of a surprise to the defense when it's not thrown to him.

This is great data! Sanu has the fifth highest Target Rate in the country. Boykin's Catch Rate is 3rd highest.

My guess is O. Leftwich is really Bates.

I like the way the ball is spread too, but as the season goes on I can see Brazill's numbers separating from the rest of the pack. Tyler likes to key on him in certain situations. Defenses are going to start recognizing that and adjust accordingly, we will have to do the same.

Personally, I would like to see Mr. Dunlop with more targets. His catch rate is second only to Boykin's. You could argue his is actually better because a lot of Boykin's are dump offs and swing passes. Dunlop is catching the ball down field in traffic, which is what we need a lot more of IMO.

I think it's interesting looking at these stats that one would have a hard time figuring who are WRs and who are RBs.  That flexibility and wide range of choices of targets has to keep defenses a little off guard and guessing.  That's a very good thing.
