Clicked over to your streaming game after watching the Owls feast on the Cardinals. I really appreciate the free streaming but why doesn't it work consistently? Has the MAC streaming ever worked consistently? The pic was clear but it ketp dropping, and your game was even more difficult.

Anywho, my comment is about MAC Officiating. It is terrible. Admittedly, I only saw portions of your game. Firstly, I thought the "horse-collar" was more of an unsportsmanlike or late hit. I didn't think that was the correct penalty but I thought some call should have been made. Didnt see complaints about PI on some of your receivers.

My beef is with the indecision. MAC refs dont make calls. They just stand there looking at each other. fThe late drive for Buf was a fiasco. The very poor spot, they missed it by a yard a half. Then after fixing it, it took 10 mins to figure out the down. The goaline stand was ludicrous. I agree with Solich if he complained. Just spot the ball. When Oliver finally scored, he took 2 or 3 steps into the end zone with the ball before he lost it. How many officials are on the field that need to have it verified by replay?

I think college officiating in general has gone downhill, and the culprit may be the replay review.  It seems like the refs are willing to make a bad call in favor of allowing a play to continue knowing that it will be overturned on review.  Problem is, for most games they don't have all the camera angles needed to fully review it.  And although I agree with the need for the horsecollar ban, it should be reviewable; plays develop too fast for these old-timer refs to really see what happened from 15 or 20 yards away.  I agree that the MAC refs seem to have more than their share, but you see it in other leagues, too -- even the AQs.  And at least the MAC hasn't yet had a fiasco like the WAC's 22-minute review delay from a couple weeks ago or the extra point in the Toledo-Syracuse game.  The refs are people and they're bound to make mistakes, and that's what reply is supposed to correct.  But I think it's contributing to the problem.

I have a problem with the horsecollar call. I guess it makes sense when it is clearly a flagrant attempt to cause harm. In this case, the tackler was in a headlong pursuit. The QB attempted to evade the tackler by ducking. As he ducked, the tackler reached out for him, and happened to grab him by the upper back of his shoulder pads.

In my opinion, this, by definition, was not a horsecollar because the tackler did not have a hold of his collar. But beyond that, what is a tackler to do when his target ducks at the last minute, exposing only his back as he tries to evade?

This is a call that requires refs to be more discretionary. Was the tackler trying to cause harm? In this example, absolutely not. And the penalty was hugely significant in the outcome. The refs became part of the story of this game, and that alone is unacceptable.

+1

Very well stated, RF.   Let me only add that the QB was still looking for receivers and attempting to pass until the was shoved out of bounds.  If he hadn't been shoved he might have completed a pass down the sidelines.  He did have a little bit of jersey or even shoulder pad as he pushed the QB out of bounds -- but there was no attempt to injure, just to get the QB out of bounds.  This was a great defensive play and one that in no way deserved a penalty.

Thanks for the analysis MH55, and I completely agree with you.  MAC officiating this year for football has been absolutely horrendous.  I still don't think they know how to use instant replay correctly.  I was at the game yesterday, and immediately after the 90 yd TD, i received a text from my friend watching the stream.  It simply read "i think he may have stepped out."  The fact that he sees this, and the replay official see no need to even spend a minute to look again with the referee to double check that the correct call was made.  And then you review the TD when Oliver is clearly in the end zone, before the ball comes free?  Seriously?  Some of the things in this league truly amaze me.  P.S. Congrats on the win yesterday.
