On Donte's long TD run, there was a flag thrown for sideline intereference on Ohio at the very end of the play.  There were two dip$hits standing on the Temple sideline around the 5-10 yard line that apparently are responsible for that penalty.  Once the call was made, they bolted into the tents behind the endzone and disappeared for the rest of the game.  I hope Solich gives them an absolute reaming if they are able to be identified.  How does this happen?

(BTW, they were wearing black clothing if that helps identifying them)

The sideline interference call was around the 50 and on the Ohio side. I thought one of the refs ran into Solich. The refs dropped another flag at the goal line for taunting on Harden. I think the other refs talked him out of that one.

So that's what it was.  We saw those two run to the tents.  But nobody could figure it out and I received some texts that the TV guys were clueless as well.

I was also told that Donte Harden definitely fumbled on the kickoff after Temple tied it 14-14.  I went home and watched and I agree that he fumbled.  Goes both ways on calls like that in this conference I guess.

Well, after the shafting we got at Beefs, we deserved a few bad calls to go our way.  Make up calls?

I remember this from 1995 when Joe Gieck the Virginia Director of Sports Medicine tried to trip the Viginia Tech player on the last play of the game.  Can't miss with the orange pants.

The guys that ran away were OHIO's ball boys, you could tell they thought sheepishly that the sideline interference was on them.

Or.. you know.... they were running into the TD club to go catch the Extra Point like they do after every single TD?

Ted, thanks for the explanation.  I assumed the penalty was for Donte leaping unnecessarily into the end zone.  Even though they said "sideline interference."

They might have been doing that too, but I saw one of the guys faces.  He was like 5 feet from me as I was in the Touchdown Club seats thanks to Alan Swank and he had a very sheepish face as he ran over behind the post.

There were two flags on the play. One flag was around the 50-yard line on the Ohio side. I didn't have a great look at the TV but it appeared as though a referee on that side of the field ran into Frank. The second flag was at the goal line where Harden dove in. The ref clearly threw it after the dive. There was a lot of discussion among about 5 refs surrounding that flag. I think an argument could be made that since players were chasing Harden that his dive was permissible. Addazio was going nuts over that flag being picked up. But they obviously enforced the sideline interference call on the ensuing kickoff. I hope to watch it off DVR tonight and see if it was Frank who contacted the ref on the Ohio side.

Had the celebration call stood, where would the ball be placed, down/distance etc?

15 yards from the spot of the foul. Assuming the foul occurred at the one, Ohio would be 1st-and-10 from the 16.

From NCAA,org:
Taunting rule takes effect this fall

This will be the first year of the rule change regarding unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, which will be treated as either live-ball or dead-ball fouls. Previously, all fouls of this kind were treated as dead-ball fouls.

The change means, for example, that if a player makes a taunting gesture to an opponent on the way to scoring a touchdown, the flag would nullify the score and penalize the offending team 15 yards from the spot of the foul.

Penalties for dead-ball misconduct fouls (for example, unsportsmanlike behavior after the player crosses the goal line) continue to be assessed on the ensuing kickoff or the extra point/two point conversion attempt.

I believe the new rule is the 15 yard line.  Not sure about this, but that's what I recall and what all the knowledgeable people in my section were saying.  This brain trust is seldom wrong about anything.  We are all legends in our own minds.

If this wasn't taunting, I don't know how they could have called a dive taunting

the taunting rule is very clear in that it indicates some sort of communication taking place, be it verbal or nonverbal

Why was that taunting flag not enforced? Every other college game I've watched this year it has been.

because there was no taunting. Harden had two defenders within 5 yards and was certainly justified in diving for the pylon. It's not like he turned around and did the Nestea plunge.

I thought for sure that the TD was going to be nullified, but the replay shows a Temps player who had given up the chase about two yards behind Donte, even Donte really couldn't have known that he was clear for the TD.  Since he began his leap at the 4, I think the ball would've been placed at the 19.

Glad to see Solich lecturing Donte on the sidelines afterwards.  He did the same thing with Dion Byrum after he got flagged for taunting on his first TD INT vs. Pitt in '05.  Then, the TD counted but they kicked off 15 yards back.

Donte said he heard them behind him and he was going for the TD

Is my memory bad, or what?  I thought that Dion's taunting penalty was after the pick-6 in the previous week's Northwestern game.  I thought I remembered him in both instances in the Pitt game crossing the goal line and then calmly placing the ball on the ground in a very restrained manner.  Perhaps, I'm mixed up here.  Are you sure Pataskala that this happened on his first pick-6 in the Pitt game?  I'm not disputing your memory, just saying that it conflicts with mine. If more than one other person remembers it as you do, I'll concede that you're right.

I agree with you, and your memory is bad.  :)  I remember it being Northwestern, and it not being ruled an interception, but a fumble recovery for a td.  Wasn't it an option play gone awry behind the line of scrimmage?

What, Mike, I don't get no credit?

Yes, now that I think about it, the play was kind of a fumbled pitch that Dion just picked right out of the air.  It was still a pick-6 but not technically an interception.  Same result.

For some reason I remember it being in the Pitt game, but I haven't found a penalty called on either TD.  Could be he showboated a bit, but not enough to get flagged, and Solich called him aside.

The pick in the NW game was ruled a fumble recovery because it was a pitch that went behind the QB.  NW was running an option play and the QB telegraphed his pitch to the trailing RB.   Dion read it beautifully and grabbed the ball in mid-air.  He was halfway to the end zone before anybody on NW knew what was happening.
