I don't really mind that, they put out a lot of great students and occasionally actual Hollywood movie actresses

That commercial is usually followed up with another one, but from the point of view of the student who filmed/directed it which shows off the video production school...which is one of the better ones in the country from what I hear.

I didn't see the normal follow up commercial.  In fact, I think both schools only got 1 commercial during the entire broadcast.

I concur that each school only appreared to get one commercial.

If we're going to do a theatrical commercial, why no Pipper cammeo? (that has the dual benefit of of pushing OHIO AND the HTC

This made me LOL.  Not sure the dramatic all caps subject matches the reason for it.  Or maybe I'm wrong and the nation is abuzz this morning with the non-HD spot ran last night.

The problem is it wasn't just in SD, it was in 16:9 SD, which means it only took up 56% of the available screen space.

And if you were watching it on an SD TV, it only took up 42.2% of the screen!

I'm certain that no one but you really cares. What was more of an embarrassment was the empty stadium at the end of a close game. The weather was nice and most of the students are a 15 minute walk from Peden, plus it's the biggest game of the season and on national TV.

+1

I'd personally like to disown as future fellow alumni any student (except in rare circumstances of some actual emergency or sickness) any student who left at half-time.  This shows me that half the students waving their thundersticks in the first half were full of phony-baloney school spirit and thought the bar scene was more important than cheering on their team in the second half.  That's truly pathetic.  As others have said on here before, we need to do things in our orientation program and in other creative ways to instill some school spirit in these folks.  One thing that I found strange was that at the Akron game that clinched the MAC East title a few years ago (in much worse weather) there was a decent student turnout for a "white out."  Virtually all of the students stayed for the whole game.  As I recall this game was in or near finals week.  The turnout that night was not as good as the first half last night but during the second half the student side still looked 70 percent full with very little attrition.  Why the difference?  Also, as has been noted here on numerous occasions, virtually no one left the Pitt game even into the OT period.  Again, why the difference?  These were all big games with lots of pre-game buzz.  I'm truly baffled, and somewhat depressed, about this leave at half-time phenomenon.

Did anyone catch the student's name? Not sure if I heard it correctly, but I think I recognized her last name. Any confirmation would be appreciated.

OCF-I am with you.  I just don't get a walk out of the biggest most electric game of the year on National TV.  And we wonder why we get no respect?  It does start from day 1.  Someone needs to start turning the mentality around.  The question is:  How do you change the culture?  It seems to be getting worse.

Thanks, Cory.

I wasn't sure, but I thought I heard "Burkley" (or something close to that) while half listening and half grading papers. While there have been numerous Burkleys go through Ohio University over the past 4 decades, the most recent one graduating this past June, the student in the commercial is not a relative.

I figured since she is obviously a pretty good student (since she got in the commercial).

I sorta agree. Can't we promote some academic programs with some intellectual heft? But I guess thats not what the kids are looking for; with their iphones and their twitters and what nots! Damn kids and their short attention spans. God forbid they learn how the technology they use actually works!

I could keep going but who cares, we just beat Temple on national television. So instead, I invite you to imagine your own Paul Graham nonsense rant.

For some reason that's not too difficult!

It does seem to be worsening, and not just from the standpoint of student enthusiasm. At last year's home game against Buffalo, there were dozens if not hundreds of kids running around the stadium for the entire game, especially on Victory Hill or whatever it's called. Last night was oddly different. We were in the Victory Hill area as Ohio scored two touchdowns on that end of the field late for the win. It was very exciting - more compelling than the Buffalo game - and Victory Hill was almost completely empty. The crowd to watch the 110 afterward was tiny.

It was warmer last night than at the Buffalo game. Really a pretty nice night. The Buffalo game of 11/4/10 was also on TV but was on a Thursday rather than a Wednesday. Both were school nights. I can't explain this difference in fan support. It really does go beyond the students, though, and at least the students who were there were making some good noise for the duration.

As a proud graduate of the Ohio University School of Theater I was delighted with the spot.  It would have been even BETTER in HD.

Thanks for your insights, PF.

But, please don't lump all of us old farts together.  Jeff McKinney and I were up on every third down yelling in his case and pounding thundersticks in my case (getting over a cold and my yelling ability was a little under par last night).

"some intellectual heft"...Sounds like you are ready to pick a fight.

At my three almas I was in journalism, law and business, so far be it from me to be touting intellectual hefl.

But I have had the privilege of visiting nations where higher proportions of students are enrolled in engineering, science and technology curriculums.  Examples include Singapore and Korea.  So, yes, I believe that longer term our nation could suffer competitively because of the relative dearth of students in those techy disciplines.

Of course, as a budding computer scientist I wouldn't mind some hot STEM action but it doesn't have to be. Perhaps instead we could have Steve Hays reading Ulysses to a local sparrow in a beautiful meadow. Actually, I think I'm on to something here...
