Reverse pass complete for TD, check.  Reverse hand off good for 9 yards, check.

Why no wildcat?  A few games ago Kent's better than average defense (held Miami to 9) knowing he was going to run couldn't stop him before he sprang for enough to move the chains a couple of times.  Certainly he could dump a few short passes to a tight end dragging while the defense is scrambling to cover Brazille long or flying to the ball to stop Bates from tucking it for the run.

This offense lacks imagination.  Bates should be getting more touches than 2 in 2 losing games.

It was wonderful to see the pass over the middle to the rambling tight end, better not try it more than once in a couple of weeks though.

On a positive observation the pass play to Harden was beautifully designed and executed and plays like that are what we should see more often.

I couldn't agree with you more. He is arguably the best athlete on the roster and needs a chance to show that and make positive plays.  It appears that our passing playbook consists of 5 yd out-routes and bubble screens galore so why can't he catch some of these balls and make a play?

What would Charles Barkley do?

Some Bobcat players tweeted after the game about the disappointing lack of use of talent that the team has even with the injuries. Looking back at the game this team looks nothing like the machine that performed against Marshall...and I mean the play calling has soured..the tempo has slowed to a crawl. Hopefully they will correct this and win 5 in a row.

Players tweeting that they are unhappy with game strategy is not a good sign.  Time for seniors to put an end to that and to start leading.

My only guess on Bates is that he is not earning touches during practice.  The coaches have no other reason to shun him.  It wouldn't surprise me that his practice effort if lacking after seeing him cop a major attitude while doing some extra reps with the wide receivers coach in August.  Hope it's not true...that's certainly not going to get him to the NFL.

+1 on both fronts.

Now that the half back pass is out of the bottle, Phil at least needs to be in the backfield more often to make defenses think about it.

As far as his place in the possession passing game (cause that's all we have), we already have a plethora of talented receivers who aren't seeing the ball enough as it is.  Thompson and Dunlop to name two.

Part of this is due to the defense not getting the ball back for the offense. Here's a look at plays per game so far. Throw out the Kent St. game because that offense can't get of its own way and you can see that the offense is getting fewer touches since the Rutgers game.

Ohio Opponent Ohio's Score Points per play
NMSU 77 64 44 0.57
GW 72 60 30 0.42
Marshall 85 63 44 0.52
Rutgers 59 78 26 0.44
Kent St. 83 69 17 0.20
Buffalo 72 80 37 0.51
Ball St. 61 78 20 0.33

Do you mind showing this to SBH?  He's at the game but he's missing the turning-point items.  Instead of pointing to a couple of incompletes, he should see stats such as our offensive plays per game dropping.

He's missing that we are listless.  On tube I saw Beefs and Ballie.  Had guests over so I only saw about 3/4 ov Ballie with sound on for just a few plays.  If you saw the first half of those games and thought we were going to win, what stadium were you in?

Try this re the Ballie:  no pass rush, guys trying hard but few tackles for losses, trouble bringing guys down when we hit them the first time or behind the line of scrimmage.  Or, how about Balls converted 12 of 22 third down attempts on us.  Sorry; if you give up 12 third down conversions, then you have little chance of winning.

Offense hits on big plays but isn't sustaining/dominating.  Fan support..home field advantage/intimidation?  No.

Yes, but the defense started the game 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, then gave up a long fg drive. Our possessions, unfortunately, were 4 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, then we finally started to move the ball. Again, our D took their lumps in this game, but they gave the O every opportunity to pounce and get a lead early. This was such a missed opportunity. If Ball State is playing from behind, they're changing their gameplan. They don't get to just methodically pound us and keep converting 3rd downs. They end up having to throw more and farther downfield than they're comfortable doing.

Also, we've played four home games. In three of them, our offensive performances could bore one to tears. That doesn't help fan support. That doesn't cause the students who were there to share the experience with the other students who found some excuse to skip the game.

Monroe - I'm not complaining about incompletes.  My problem is completions to opposing players, combined with fumbles.  Turnovers cost us the game.  Frank stated that after the game.  Maybe you need to enlighten him, big manz.

Party naked!

I agree with that. If the offense had built leads at Buffalo and against Ball St., it would help to make the opposing offenses more one-dimensional and benefit the defense. Still, it just seems like every loss gets blamed on play-calling/offensive performance. With the state of the D, it seems like the offense must play a near-perfect game to win. I think most of the blame has to fall with the defense.

Why would you think they are going to correct it now. They haven't done so for the last 3 games!
