Senator Balderson stumbled around on a couple of occasions but it was nice of him to recognize the team. I saw Jordan Thompson mingle around a little before the assembly got started, overall I think they all enjoyed the experience.

Don't we all feel better when they say a prayer appealling to the deity of your choice. The same closed mind attitude that has the guy referring to us as 'buckeyes.'

When I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio was not a red state. Let's all get narrow.

Ah yes, Balderson. The same guy who called the Zanesville animal incident the number one story in the history of Ohio. Great representation we have.

Is this your attempt at revision of history? Ohio votes for republican president in 1952, 1956, 1960, 1968, 1972, 1980. Only clear D win was Johnson in 64 and coming off Watergate Carter won by just 11,000 votes in the state and in 1948 incumbent Truman won by just 7,000. Can you say Governor Rhodes? So when you were a kid in Cleveland was Ohio a Red state or not--what is your non-Cuyahoga County evidence?

Your memory is obviously clouded by the Cleveland papers. Did you ever step in to Lake, Geauga or Medina County when you were a kid? The only D's elected in those counties were for dog catcher--probably pretty similar to about 70 of the 88 Ohio counties during your youth.

I take these slights far harder than most, and maybe I'm poorer for it. But it's a tenet* of journalism that started in Don Lambert's news writing class that I've extended to most every facet of daily proceedings:

If you misspelled a proper name on any given assignment, you received an F.

And Lambert's explanation was simple. You may have created the most beautiful sentence ever written, but in that spelling error, you have diminished every other facet of your work. The proper spelling of a name is among the simplest facts to verify. People will happily spell their name for you as many times as it takes to get it right. The failure to get it right in print is a tremendous lack of respect to the subject.

And although I'm not writing professionally, I apply that standard to daily life. How disrespectful is it for me to commonly misspell the name of my employees, or prepare invoices to customers with the name of the store wrong? And how badly does a vendor want to have a business relationship if he won't take the seconds necessary to spell my name.

It doesn't matter than mine isn't an easy name. What matters is that when I get mail addressed to "Pete Shotoe", it is clear that somebody hasn't taken the simplest initiative to learn the most basic thing about me.

So forgive me if I'm salty when a PA announcer calls the school I hold dear "Ohio State" or a state representative in chamber calls its team "the Buckeyes". It's been made obvious that those people have not take the initiative to learn the most basic of things. And that I find offensive.

*And I receive an F for misusing the word tenent in this space. Shame on me.

Attention to detail matters. I think it often make the difference between success and failure in life. A mistake like that is not excusable. His entire talk was written down, so either he cannot read or he cared so little about the topic that he did not prepare for it. I am a little surprised that McDavis didn't lean in and correct him.

He did say bobcats a sentence or two after the mistake. Maybe someone else wrote it and he didn't proofread it before presenting.

Oh well, now go out there and win some more bowl games until they can say our school's name and pronounce the name of our head coach right.

President McDavis did a good job representing our university as always.

In regard to the Senator, first of all you NEED to get the name of the team right. For God's sake. Second of all, he mispronounced Coach Solich's name. That tells me two things. First, he isn't a Bobcat fan (meaning if I ever move back to Athens I know not to vote for him). Second, he didn't even take the time to confirm the pronunciation of the names of his guests.

Sloppy.

Annoying.

Something you may not know:

This representative just visited OU student senate a few weeks ago. He complimented OUr university, and seems like a very good guy. Maybe not the most competent, but he still took the time to visit Athens and speak to the student body.

At the student senate meeting, he spoke to us about the Zanesville animal story and how they are banning wild animals in residential homes. I made sure to ask him "are you telling me that i cant own a live bobcat?" He cracked up. He's a very down to earth fellow.

You know what Frank Solich likes most about coaching in the MAC? While he gets older, his coaching competition stays the same age, man.

I know Senator Balderson. He is a good guy and I am sure he is not happy with his mistake. Every one is capable of a slip of the tongue......
