Congrats on the win. I am an avid CFB fan and LOVE the MAC playing on the weekdays. Without offense intended, I like most college football fans would never think of watching Ohio-Miami (Oh). on a Saturday, but I absolutely look forward to it on a Tuesday. The MAC has provided all of CFB a ton of entertainment this season and I can only imagine it has done good things for the league. As a fan of CFB, I've watched every weeknight Ohio University game, and as an applicant to the University, I've been cheering for the Bobcats.

Now on to my next question. I learned today of my acceptance to the College of Business as an undergrad. I am from Michigan and am looking to go out of state for college. OU's campus is a big draw for me along with their undergrad b-school that I've found to be both highly ranked and respected. However, I'm wary a lot of what I hear about life at Ohio University. It seems that Athens provides little in the way of entertainment for students which has pushed them to drink like perhaps no other school in the country. Don't get me wrong, I've spent many weekends in a drunken stupor during my HS career, but I'm looking for a meaningful experience out of university. I want access to parties during college but I don't want my college to be consumed by it. What am I to make of the reputation that Ohio University is drinking school with a drunk student body? Also, as a state school, will it be hard for me to adapt as an OOSer? I know at MSU all of my friends have stuck together and met no one - I don't want that in college. Did you hang out with your HS friends in college or what?

Thanks to all those willing to help... go win the MAC!

Fight On! (I'm as avid as a USC fan as it gets)

Uhhhh....no.

You make new friends at Ohio.  We are as cultured or uncultured as you want to be.  Big cities are close.....rural isolation a stone throw away. Your success or failure at Ohio will depend upon your attitude.  Have fun...or not....the choice is yours.

Pretty much if you look for things that are entertaining then you'll find it.  There's several coffee houses in Athens, on of which is open past midnights and has live music occasionally.  There's also an ice rink on campus with several recreational facilities.  In town there's a hookah bar (among the dozens of other bars and coffee shop).  There is also a cheap movie theater -$10 tickets_ (with not that bad of seating) near Walmart on E. State Street and an even cheaper one (if you have a car) up near Nelsonville -$4 tickets-.  If you are a fellow nerd then every fall and spring there is Humans versus Zombies.  Pretty much it all depends on the group you fall in with because I partied but not that hard and still had a great time.

The opposing team sucks!

I can tell you from personal experience that I went to OU from NE OH and had 5 close friends from HS go with me. By the end of my 4 years I can say only 1 of those is still what I would call a friend. By the end of my sophomore year I had a whole new group of friends and by senior year I had made a legitimate 20 friends who at any time I can call my best friend.

I too graduated from the CoB from the sports admin undergrad program and can tell you the faculty and staff are fantastic but I'm sure you are viewing all schools with faculty that stand out. As mentioned above the experience is what you make it and there are plenty of clubs/organizations/intramurals/religious/volunteer opportunities that you have an opportunity to explore yourself and become the person you want to be. Alcohol and partying isn't everything at OU though that is what is portrayed the most to the country. I graduated with friends who enjoyed going out and drinking wasn't always involved.

The best piece of advice I can give you is visit the campus, talk to the faculty in person, and try and leave without saying yes to that acceptance letter! I know I couldn't do it

Most of the people on this board are obviously going to be biased. We loved our time in Athens... some are still in Athens years after graduating. But go out and look at the alumni association's Facebook page. You'll see the same passion for the place. You will almost never meet an OU grad who is lukewarm about the school. They talk about it wistfully, return often, and have a deep connection with the place. Believe me, that connection does not come from partying. You can do that at any school. I lived in international dorms and met kids from all around the world. I went mountain biking in the beautiful state parks. I enjoyed the constant cultural offerings. I loved my classes. I loved the small town, small campus feel with the cosmopolitan nature of a large campus. And yeah, I drank a good bit of beer. I'm a fairly old bastard to someone your age, but I still return 1-4 times a year, making a four-hour drive from Cleveland. My wife attended a different university, and she loves going to Athens as much as I do. In my experience, the only people unhappy in Athens were the ones who couldn't stand being 75 miles from a "big city." Those people tend to transfer, and that's OK. No place is for everyone. If you lived in Ohio, however, you'd see that our graduates are more vocal, more proud, and more in love with their alma mater than anyone from any other school in the state. If you like the academics, campus, and atmosphere (and you don't mind being a bit remote and having a true residential college experience), I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I went to OU in the '70s -- when the legal drinking age for beer was 18 -- but I'm sure it's not changed much since then.

First, the "party school" moniker gives everyone the impression that everybody hits the bars every night or there's a party in every dorm every night.  I never found that to be the case.  Weekends got to be pretty wild, but that's probably the situation everywhere.  Fact is, there was (and probably still is) a fair amount of studying that goes on during the week.  About the only "partying" that happened during the week was one of the "teas" sponsored by one of the school organizations.  Those were usually pretty mild.

Second, don't worry about finding friends.  I had never been to the OU campus when I started there in the spring of '70.  I didn't know anybody there and I was pretty shy.  But I soon made friends, and not just from Ohio -- NY, Jersey, and elsewhere -- some of them were classmates and others were roommates and friends of roommates.  Some of them I still keep in touch with today, though not as much as I'd like.

Third, OU is what you make of it.  I like to joke that there are only three things to do in Athens on a Saturday night: get drunk, get high or get laid.  But there are other things happening too, and some don't cost a lot of money.  OU has an excellent theater program (you may have seen one product on the OU commercial they show during the ESPN telecasts) that puts on several performances during the year.  The same holds true for the music school.  And there are concerts at Mem Aud and the Convo, all types of sporting events, intramural athletics, movies (although you'll need to drive for those) and lots of other stuff.

I have a nephew who started at OU in August.  Haven't heard much about him, but what I've heard has been really good.

OU is one of those rare places where you can get a great education AND have a good time.  But like I said, OU is what you make of it.  It's up to you -- not anybody else -- to make it a great experience.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

You'll love it at OHIO.  OHIO's remoteness makes it very unique which lends to it's label of "Party School".  There are no cities within 45 miles of Athens.  Therefore, there are no commuters.  You will live four (or five, or six) years of your life seeing the same people in class, in your dorm, in the cafeterias, uptown, at weekend parties.  Socializing is one of the great experiences of OU, but the inclusion of drinking isn't necessary to enjoy that experience.  It's been labeled a "Party School" for decades...but it's really because of the uniqueness the campus' seclusion from the outside world that creates the opportunity to socialize with your classmates and develop lifelong friendships.  You are almost in a position where you have no choice but to socialize and meet new people because everyone in your freshman dorm will be in the same position as you in terms of not knowing anyone.  To the degree that socializing interferes with your school work is something that you have control over.

The other key is to immediately get involved with campus groups that interest you.  It is a large campus and there will be interest groups that feature activities you enjoy.  Intramural sports, arts, politics, fraternities, radio/tv, band, music, religious, etc.  Gives you a great way to meet more classmates, develop relationships and are activities that aren't focused around drinking.

My sisters went to Toledo and OSU...they are far closer to my OU friends than anybody they went to college with at their own schools.   Schools in big cities have commuters...you don't see same people in your class because they show up and go off to their own lives...the bars/nightspots have locals mixed in with other students...it's not the family experience you'll get at OU.

I've never once been drunk in my life and I could always find something to do. There's something for everyone in Athens.

I graduated in '77 and was heavily involved in student government.  So, I might be different from you in a number of ways!

I didn't want to go to OU.  During freshmen year, I applied for a transfer to Syracuse and enrolled there to start my sophomore year.  But then...I realized what I'd left behind and hitch-hiked back to OU.  One of the best decisions of my life.

OU is a 'party school' because it is a small, very closely-knit college town.  You don't need a car.  You'll make friends with people who'll have a car if one is needed.  You'll find a community in which people don't care at all about your status, your family's wealth and the like.  They will engage you for who you are.

So, you will get a great classroom education and a great real life education.  Ohio University and Athens, Ohio are an incredible place to attend college.

Slight disclaimer:  My two brothers are alumni, one of my nephews is a senior and another nephew will probably be a freshmen next fall.  So, my family is not stupid;  they are O H I O.

Plus there's 9-3 with the MAC title game and a bowl game and prospects for next year very bright...as well as rising hoops and field hockey and volleyball.

I couldn't imagine a better place to grow up.

And, your colors are Green and White.  They are not USC red (maroon?) and yellow.

Graduated in 2006 and as long as you aren't a complete urban lifestyle person you can find a niche.  As a freshman more than likely you will end up in a freshman only dorm, in those cases you tend to almost gravitate completely as a whole floor; you'll have some cliques within it but it still is pretty funny to see a group of 15 guys deep going out to party.  Intramurals are really fun at OHIO if you are into that, can always get into Student Senate or many of the other student groups on campus.  Plus if you just visit OHIO in the spring the female scenery alone will convince you to attend. :)

You can spend your entire time at Ohio University without drinking a drop of alcohol and still have a blast.

My best advice is if you do end up actually deciding to come here, look into student organizations.  There's a club for practically everything: video production, swing dancing, game show appreciation, snowboarding, religion, video games... These are all activities that i personally know people that are involved, and there are many many more that I don't know on the top of my head.

I went to a small high school (153 kids grades 9-12) and 7 of my classmates went to OU.  I rarely saw any of the other six once we got to campus in the fall of my Freshamn year.  I was the only business major.  I purposely moved into a dorm where none of them were living.  I made a whole new batch of friends, many of which I am still close with.  I graduated in 1995 with a double major in Marketing and Finance.

OU is whatever you make of it.  The College of Business is highly ranked for a reason and the party school is deserved, but does not consume life.  Athens embraces the work hard, play hard mantra.  Enjoy your time there.  I cherish mine.

I am fortunate to have two grad school alma maters - law at Marshall Law at Cleveland State and business at Stanford - but consider myself very lucky to have chosen to get my bachelor's at Ohio.

Now you get to hear a story I've told all my kids, nephews and nieces as they head off to college - and many of them have gone to Ohio.

In the 60s, Ohio was on semesters and the university is now moving from quarters back to semesters.  As a high schooler, I done well without studying much.  How much harder could college be?

After 6 weeks as an Ohio freshman, I was facing my first round of exams.  My first was in geology as taught by the late Stanley Fisher.  For that test I studied three hours and said to myself, "I never studied that long for any test in high school. I must have the material nailed."

The next day Professor Fisher handed out a multi-page exam.  As I flipped through it, I knew I'd flunked before I started.

A few days later he passed out the graded exams.  On mine in red ink was the following: 47. You can do better.

I did.

Some of my freshman friends did indeed flunk out.  One drank himself out.  But some of my closest friends decades later are ones that stuck it out at Ohio and are proud and grateful to have done so.

I am a current Junior in the college of business, and I must say that I've had an amazing experience here at Ohio University. I do enjoy partying but in no way, shape, or form is my life centered around it. I am very active in multiple student organizations that occupy my time here. I have been afforded many opportunities that I wouldn't have had otherwise. This summer I have an internship in another country for one of the worlds largest companies because of my success here, you could very well do the same. The business program here is fantastic, you get a lot of respect from people when you tell them you are in the college of business. Hope to see you here next year. Go Bobcats!

If you haven't gotten the general theme here, your results are determined by where and how you invest time.

And become a fan. Your return on investment as a Bobcat fan is far more satisfying that attaching yourself to a high profile powerhouse that will never know who you are.

Ha, I get paid to answer these sorts of questions.

First of all, congratulations on your admission into Ohio University. The College of Business is one of the more selective programs the university offers, so I assume you have a very good head on your shoulders.

When people ask about the party school reputation, I always ask what images come to mind when they hear those words. Everyone says something related to alcohol. Then, I ask if they think that is something that is unique to Ohio University.

I knew people at OU who would stay in on a Saturday night to get caught up on homework. I knew people at College of Wooster who did nothing but get blackout drunk. The point is college really is what you make of it. When you want a social atmosphere, it's safe to say you can easily find it here. If you want to separate yourself from that atmosphere, your friends probably aren't going to twist your arm about it, and if anyone does, you probably don't need them in your life anyway.

The point of attending college in the first place is to earn your degree and start your career. In spite of the party school reputation, 90% of our graduates are either employed or on an active path to a higher degree within six months of earning their bachelors' degree. Our students have taken home more than 70 national and international awards, so no one should feel any modicum of shame that their degree reads Ohio University. (And for the record, I have never been asked by a job interviewer about the party school reputation).

As for your question about being an out-of-stater, don't worry about it. All 50 states in the union are represented in the student body. As long as you are a good person and bring something to the table amongst your peers, no one is going to look at you like you're different.

I always found plenty of things to do away from the bars. One or several schools, especially the arts, always has something going on. Just watch the bulletin boards.

In my experience, the folks you meet on your dorm floor freshmen year end up being very close friends throughout college.  The CoB also has a lot of group work within classes with familiar faces which also grow some tight relationships.

A Party school doesn't necessarily mean a drunken school.  I would say we are a social school that likes to have fun.  I echo JSF's sentiments that I never got drunk but was never bored.  I spent hundreds of nights up town just hanging out with my peeps.  Also, we have the best women (not just looks)...True story.

What a well spoken and grounded young man.  Enroll at Ohio, and if it is accounting you choose, contact me in 4 years for an interview at my CPA firm.

Some of my freshman friends did indeed flunk out.  One drank himself out.  But some of my closest friends decades later are ones that stuck it out at Ohio and are proud and grateful to have done so.

Now we know why Noah Keller is Mike's favorite player.

I've never looked at the "Party School" rep as a negative.   Wherever you go to school you will need to have discipline.  If you have discipline you will be successful.  The way I see it if you have the desire to party there is always going to be that opportunity.  If you want to stay sober and have fun there is plenty of opportunity to do that.  Nobody will force you to party if you don't want to but if your schedule is such that you want to party on a Tuesday you'll be able to do it.

I came to Athens from out of state (Maryland) and didn't know a soul.  The first night there I met a guy who would be my best friend for the rest of my stay in Athens.  He was also from out of state.  Within the first few days I had met a large number of guys that would be my friends throughout my years at school and many are still my friends today, 30 years down the road.  Some of those guys were from Ohio, some not.  Some of those guys had been friends with each other for years, some not.  There are just too many people who have been thrust into the exact same situation as you for you not to make friends.

So, in short, you'll love Athens.

What a well spoken and grounded young man.  Enroll at Ohio, and if it is accounting you choose, contact me in 4 years for an interview at my CPA firm.

This is one thing I have noticed about OU grads....they are always willing to help out the next batch.  I know I helped a few get interviews before I went back to school.  I would do the same now if the opportunity arose.

And if the application deadline for it hasn't passed (and you've got the grades and sat scored for it), and I don't think it has, apply to the htc. I don't think the the course requirements are much different than standard COB, but it comes with several advantages (priority scheduling chief among them)

From my time in Athens I can remember Intramural sports as big. Athens is located in the Wayne state forest with plenty of parks to explore and if you are into mountain biking plenty of trails regionally. No skiing locally though but the resorts in West Virginia that are among the best in the East are only a few hours away. There is also a lot of local festivals including the Lumberjack in Nelsonville which draws 60-70 thousand visitors. The Hocking Hills are 30 minutes away and are one of the biggest attractions in the state year round.

I just graduated in June and miss Athens tremendously.  It was the only school I visited -- it just felt like home (and indeed, after about two weeks of fall quarter, I noticed myself calling the dorm "home" more than my hometown).  I'm from a rural area in NE Ohio, and there were only a handful of students from my high school there -- only one I interacted with on a regular basis (my girlfriend).

I made a great bunch of friends, primarily through WOUB and the O Zone athletic student section (out of class activities), and found that virtually everyone on campus was friendly and helpful.  I think the number of helpful responses to this thread indicate the overall atmosphere pretty well.  The biggest difference between Ohio and many of the other schools in the state is the rural nature of the school, and the fact that, unlike Kent or Akron, for example, it doesn't lend itself well to commuting.  The remote location also keeps the vast majority of students on campus over the weekend.  I know friends at other schools where the dorms emptied out every Friday with students going home every weekend -- I didn't know anybody who did that at OU.  The vast majority of people stayed on campus every weekend, and helped to create that community feeling.

If you're looking for more urban, hang out at the mall kind of entertainment, you'll be dissapointed.  However, the number of things to do in Athens is immense: lots of local music, *free* student seats at all varsity sports that are literally the best in the house, events put on by student groups, MemAud brings in a handful of concerts and off-Broadway productions every year, intramurals galore, the list goes on and on.  And if you get bored, head out to Stroud's Run or drive up to the Hocking Hills.

Also, if you do choose Ohio, make sure to hit one of Dennis (gman)'s tailgates before a football game.  You won't leave hungry!  And, if you have any trouble navigating the bureaucracy of a large school, feel free to get in touch!

One of the great things about Ohio is that despite its size, it is a very tight-knit school.  The interaction of students across the board is immense.  You know the other students and the student athletes.  Freshmen and soph year I lived with a number of football players.  So much more fun when you know the players on the field.  Same with those that may be in a play or in the band.  Because of some work opportunities I had with the Athletic Department I got to know the basketball team.  My intramural team played them had a picnic/softball tournament against the team and coaches (they luckily stuck to basketball).  Senior year I lived with 6 other guys and we invited a number of professors over for Thanksgiving dinner the weekend before finals.  They all accepted and we had a great time (anyone who heard Eric Wagner tell his soccer story would understand why).  Ohio is what you make it.  As I've told others, if you want it to simply be a party school.  It will be.  But few define it or live it that way.  And to another post, After graduation I headed to NYC and found three job offers in two weeks.
