If Temple is able to maneuver out of the MAC, it will fill an immediate void in the Big East’s football schedule that was created by West Virginia’s move to the Big 12, where the Mountaineers will begin play next season. West Virginia’s move to the Big 12 and its $20 million exit fee were completed within the last month, leaving the Big East with the logistical nightmare of attempting to fill holes in its football schedule on extremely short notice.

Of course, that nightmare will now fall on the MAC.

Congratulations to Temple.  I am jealous.

The MAC should be prepared to start hearing rumors about UMass as the potential 14th Big East football team.

It's a lot easier for the MAC to fill the scheduling voids because there currently are enough teams that it can just rearrange the conference schedule a bit and every team just picks up a non-divisional foe, whereas in the Big East, every team already was playing all the others.

EDIT: Actually, I thought the other teams weren't joining until 2013. I've seen other sorces that say 2012, but unless I've missed something, the Big East should have just UConn, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville, Rutgers and South Florida next year (and now maybe Temple).

Congratulations to Temple for getting what you want, which is to ride back into the Big East like Caesar into Rome, having conquered all foes who came before him....oh wait Temple hasn't won anything. Nevermind, that simile doesn't work.

So then, I guess congratulations to the MAC for getting Temple to pay millions of dollars to leave a conference no one really ever liked them in.....oh wait no one knows how much Temple will have to pay because we're too incompetent to spell out what happens if they don't give 2 years notice, so this will wind up in court getting settled for an undisclosed sum that, after attorney fees, is much less than $2.5 million.

Really, then, I guess the winners in this are Super Conference Bros. CUSA & MWC, who gets to avoid the annoyance of Temple fans plaguing their existence, and UMASS, who probably gets to go into the Big East fairly easily without paying the MAC much in the way of exit fees.

That the MAC would now be left with gaping holes in their football schedules is a situation of their own making. When you treat your conference as as something akin to those "storage rental units" which in effect is exactly what the MAC does when it brings the UCF's, Temple's and UMASS' of the world in for "football only", you get left with empty space when the occupant decides to move-on.

As I said in another thread, I see NO benefit to these "temporary" arrangements. The Temple situation alone should make the MAC pause with the UMASS inclusion. They don't fit geographically and they too are only interested in a "short-term rental" arrangement.

How is the MAC going to be left with holes in our FB schedules? Everyone is going to play 8 conference games whether Temple is around or not. WVUs early departure left the BigEast teams with a whole in their schedules because they were already playing a round-robin.

I think the MAC should be applauded for being agressive and trying to better position itself.  Temple and UMASS are/were very good additions.

What else is the MAC going to do?  You add existing D-1 teams for football, and hope to eventually get them all sports.  And, look to add the UMASS types.  Maybe a Deleware.

The only other option is to drop football.

We are in the midst of a huge realignment of conferences, and not a single all-sports MAC team has gotten even a sniff by anyone.  That's says it all.

I'm assuming you mean Delaware for football only?

I'm wondering if they'd be willing to increase their travel and in a different direction?

Well, it's back to the unbalanced divisions. Everyone can't just add one other crossover game with 13 teams left. For instance, Akron and BG did not play each other last year and had to have an extra crossover. Does BG go back to the East?

They would be a nice replacement for Temple.  Deleware would likely lead the MAC in attendance.  And, they ahve a pile of money.  Football only is actually better for the MAC.  Don't have to send your other teams all the way over there.

But, everyone I know who's been there says they don't want to move.

Not sure where the MAC goes now for the 14th team.....

In all likelihood. They just rework the schedule from past seasons, inserting "UMass" for Temps.

I think it's ironic that, if this comes to pass, Temps rejoins the Big Least at a time when it's barely a notch above the MAC. You don't see the really solid AQ conferences bringing in teams just for football. Plus in two or three years, there likely won't be AQ conferences anymore with the plus-one playoff system.

And it'll be interesting to see whether Temps draws any better with the likes of USF, Cincy and L'ville -- once again, teams that people in Philly know little and could care less about. Remember, they still have to compete with the Eagles, the Phillies, the Sixers, the Flyers, Orleans Tech, Penn...................

I'm pretty sure the UMass deal states that if Temps leaves, MAC retains the right to say UMass is out.  That would make scheduling very easy.

I do remember that being a stipulation also but I wonder if the MAC would throw out UMass just before it was set to join?

Selfishly I would like to see UMass remain, but if Temps goes I just don't see it making sense long term.  It will take UMass 3-5 years to get competitive, so what's the point if you can go after an App State and another for all sports and get back to 14?

Cat4Ever,  I think he's in hibernation.  I believe on February 28th he comes out of his hole and if he see his shadow we have six more months of rants.

So the Big East losing WVU gave them 20 million dollars and a logistical nightmare that will be very hard to fix by this coming fall.  Give the MAC 10 million on Temple's behalf and the Big East still nets 10 million and no logistical nightmare.  MAC nets 10 million and no Temple fans.  Boom, done.
