Here is the link:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/conferences/standings/_/id/15/year/2002/mid-american-conference

If you do not want to do the adding here are the bottom feeders (if my math is not fuzzy) based on MAC play ONLY:

BUFF:21-59
EMU:22-57
KENT:30-51
AKRON:31-49

The leaders are NIU and TOLEDO with 57 and 51 wins in league play.  Everyone else is in the 40s with wins (between 41-44).

It really is pretty amazing to see the parity and the ebb and flow of each school over 10 years but those two that haven't gotten out of the 20s...what have they really add to the conference in football?  Probably makes us as strong/strongerthan  CUSA if they are not around!  Why can't we get a better TV package?  These schools, for all they can offer are too close geographically, not the flagship institutions in their state and in relatively small markets.

If you did that for OUr fine institution what sort of numbers do you get?

In other words, what were our totals for 1992 - 2001?

1982 - 1991?

Let's remember that when you talk about Akron, or those "other 20s", we're living in a glass house...

And following that theme, even though we've been on the cusp of a MAC championship lately, all four of those teams have won a MAC championship since we have and two of those in the last seven years.

Ohio is at 43-38.  BG, MU, WMU, BSU and CMU are the others between 41-44 wins.  I did not include Temple since it was only in the conference since 2006.  In that time, though, they have 25 Conference wins!

Look, you have to use some time frame and some objective criteria.  This discussion is NOW and I am not sure the discussion was even ongoing then.  So, I used the figures that were available on that site for the last 10 years.  I think that is a long enough time frame to see if you belong. This is, however, just ONE criteria.  It could be combinedt with others, attendance, graduation numbers, resources spent, etc..  The bottom line is: the powers at be with this conference should use some objective criteria and give notice to the bottom feeders that they need to get with the program or not be surprised if they are shown the door.  Also please note, these are two of those "add ons at the bottom" that I always use as examples of the WRONG way for a conference to expand.

My final comment: love the status quo people who would do NOTHING to improve the current mediocrity and lack of respect of this Conference.  It can be made better by adding at the top or subtracting at the bottom.  My mother always said "you are judged by the company you keep".

I've been saying for a while that we should dump EMU and one of either Kent or Akron. Probably Kent given Akron's new commitment to football.

IMHO, we'd be doing Kent a favor. They could join the Horizon and focus on basketball instead of half-a$$ing it as a D-1 football school. And Akron would get a boost by their departure.

Didn't the MAC try to boot KSU and EMU for football attendance reasons back in the mid-1980s only to be blocked by an EMU lawsuit? Can we just drop a school given our league bylaws, etc.?

Casper71,  I agree with the thrust of your statements, but I must point out that the State of New York has only three schools that play FBS football -- and SUNY-Buffalo is the only state school in the FBS ranks.  The other two are Syracuse, a private school, and the USMA, a federally run institution.  Given that Buffalo is the largest and academically most prestigious of the SUNY campuses I think betting on Buffalo to be able to eventually become a higher profile school athletically was a decent gamble on the part of the MAC Daddies.

SBH, I think you are right on the EMU suit.  I have some vague memory of this attempt to trim the conference.  I also agree that there must be a way to do it today.

As for UB...didn't they basically revive football from the dead.  So, after 10 years, the success they had decades earlier and a "new tradition" appear difficult for them to consistently achieve.

Everyone seems to agree on EMU.

Didn't we kick Marshall out in the 70s?  Wasn't Temple kicked out of the big East?  There has to be a way to show the door to those that don't contribute.

Marshall was booted for 60-70 NCAA recruiting violations, which I am sure is covered by MAC bylaws.  Not sure consistent suckitude is a violation.

WARNING: A SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC RANT FOLLOWS

This was justified. What was not justified was the rebuff Marshall received a few years later (post crash) when they attempted to re-join the MAC and were voted down after being given every indication that their request was going to be honored.  This slap in the face is the major reason some Herd fans have such a disdain for the MAC, at least those who are 55+ in age.  Many in that age group consider their departure to C-USA "pay back."  Though my Ohio green is my dominant strain, my Marshall green understands this at a gut level.  Yes, it was a gut wrenching period to live through.  It was like a sucker punch to the solar plexus just as you are trying to stand up after recovering from a knock-out blow.  That's not a great analogy, but it's the best that I can do at the moment.  Somewhere I have the results of a survey we conducted shortly after this rebuff that was published in the student newspaper (The Parthenon).  The raw emotions revealed were not at all surprising given the circumstances.  Ohio, unfortunately, played a key role in the negative vote to prevent Marshall 's return at that time.  It was very shameful.

I don't know too much about the post-crash application for reinstatement by the MAC, but do know that the violations pre-crash (Perry Moss regime) were pretty outrageous and there was a pervasive culture of cheating that was fueled in part by funds provided by some rogue boosters.  Why should the MAC have been compelled to accept Marshall back after such an embarrassing episode?  The crash was a horrific tragedy, but is that why they should have been re-admitted? Perhaps other MAC presidents were concerned the school was going to take shortcuts again to rebuild the program?  Not trying to inflame you at all; just don't know how the MAC in some way mishandled the situation.

Being around OHIO in 1971 I remeber some of this. No matter what the reasons, Marshall was asked to leave the MAC and did not get acceptance at some point in time.  Bottom line is this is 2012 and that was all about 40 years ago.  None of those decision mnakers are around now and people should be looking at what is best for their institution(s) today and not at pay backs!

SBH, the point is that Marshall was asked to apply for re-admission and it was reported at the time that the MAC would look very favorably on the request.  Perhaps I wasn't explicit enough in my rant above.  It was a sucker punch.  I actually know a little more detail about this that I would be glad to PM you on, if interested.   Publicly, I'll just say that when the Council of Presidents convened to vote on the re-admission application there were initially enough votes to readmit but when the dust settled a few hours later some votes had changed and Marshall was denied admittance.  In the post-crash atmosphere in Huntington this was viewed as getting kicked in the head when you're already down on the mat.

Casper, you're right about what the attitude should be today, and for the most part that's what it is.  However, there are still a few who carry a grudge about this incident.  That's really all that I was trying to say.  Also, it was somewhat cathartic for me to write about it in my rant.  Every now and then I just need to that for my psychological health.
