I actually kind of like the idea. Send the wife shopping at one of the Columbus mega malls while the men head to the game. I would think Central Ohio alums would turn out.

Not if it's at the expense of a game in Peden.

Isn't that weekend also the new A&M / UM (or other season ending Big 12) game now?  Between that and Black Friday, it's going to be tough to garner much attention to OU.

In years when the O$U-Michigone game is at Ann Arbor, then it might work.  It's better than having 3,000 show up in Peden for a post-T'day game.  And as long Senior Day/Night is the last game at Peden.  I'm a supporter of having Senior Day/Night being the last home game before Christmas break so the seniors can have a good-sized crowd on hand for their final home game.  Having a "friends & family" crowd is pretty demeaning.

No...this was done back in 1982(?) We played at the Horseshoe versus the Richmond Spiders. 3,000 in attendance and had the smell and feel of a HS exhibition game.

I think I want to see how the semesters switch goes before scheduling anything. If we were still on quarters, I think it makes some sense, because there would probably be more students home in Columbus than hanging around Athens. With semesters, though......ehhhh I don't know.

But I don't hate the idea. Personally, I think it works better for me because, as was mentioned, it's less likely that my wife will complain about me going to a football game if I can pitch it to her as a shopping trip.

Regardless of calendar, students won't be on campus the day after Thanksgiving under any circumstances.

I disagree. Given the choice to come back for a long weekend with my friends, I think a lot of us would, because we had the most fun when no one was around. At the end of fall quarter, you MUST get out of the dorms, so we never had that choice. I think it would be like Memorial Day...and there is a reason my friends waited until Memorial Day weekend for our shuffle (and continue to set Memorial Day weekend aside for reunions).

I'm all for it if it a road game. I'd much rather play at Crew stadium (or heck, a mall parking lot) than another black friday game at Kent.

I understand the hesitation but I feel that Ohio football has come a long way since 1982. Plus, I would never be in favor of playing a "Home" game at the Horse stall. What if Ohio and Miami agreed to a 2 year deal to play the game in Columbus? A Friday game the day after Thanksgiving in Athens is a challenge. Like I said it's just an idea.

I would be fine if it wasn't a big rival, ie no fiami and no stupid cow. But rather play in Columbus (or even Cleveland) for the thanksgiving when students are on break.

If Penn is away that weekend we should play a home game at Franklin Field. Think about it... Harvard on the Hocking, the first university in the Northwest Territory, playing at the oldest stadium in college football!

Ok. I have to admit this is a horrible idea.... just trying to get a game close to home

This would make a lot of sense for Miami's home games against us if they continue to stay around Thanksgiving.  They can barely draw at home anyway, so at least this way they could get their alums out to the game and of course it would also bring out more OHIO alums without costing us a home game.

I was at this game, and as I recall the announced attendance was around 20,000, which still looked like a mostly empty stadium.  Maybe Alan Swank can tell us the actual, exact attendance.

I just vomited in my mouth at the thought of a home game at the horseshoe. The only thing that would feel right about it is the actual name of the stadium.

I doubt Ohio would want to give up a home game for this, and I doubt that Miami (or Kent) would, either. It would probably have to be a 2 year deal, with each school giving up a home game. Also, another post might be right that it would only work well in years the Michigone-Ohio A&M game was in Ann Arbor, so maybe those two games would have to be a year apart, on a four year rotation with game at Ohio, game in Columbus, game at Miami, game in Columbus. It might be an interesting way to test if Ohio's increased success on the field is leading to more widespread interest regionally.

Ohio State game in Columbus might help attendance; football-hungry fans might go on a Friday just because there's a game.

I guess I'm assuming this would be treated like Spring break and you'd be kicked out anyway.  Would like to know for sure.  I'm betting campus will be pretty closed up (no dining halls, etc.), which would make staying pretty uninviting to those in dorms anyways.  People who live off campus have always had the option to stick around for the game, and not very many did.

I see semesters affecting basketball attendance (still unsure whether it will be positive or negative), not so much with football.

Was there too. I was the student rep on the University's Intercollegiate Athletic Committee and I recall Hal McElhaney and Frank Morgan being deeply disappointed with the turnout. The NCAA, which was at odds with the CFA and trying to keep the big schools in the fold, was threatening divisional downgrades if schools like Ohio were not able to increase both attendance and seating capacity. The hastily constructed wings at Peden are one result of such pressure. I might be wrong on the 3,000, but pretty certain it was less than 10K.

Paging Alan Swank . . . Mr. Alan Swank, please tell us what the attendance was.  Were you in the house that day?  My memory is that it was closer to 20,000 than even 10,000, but I think they were expecting a much bigger crowd (40K or so), and were greatly disappointed.  I do remember that Jody's father was there.  Probably the last time he attended a Bobcat athletic event in his life.  I'm not sure about that but he wasn't a regular at our athletic events, even though he was, as we all know, an alumnus.

Yes, the attendance at the Richmond game was in the 20,000 range. Not bad at all. The negatives were that Richmond was not an opponent to get football fans interested in coming to a game for, and the Columbus media fell all over themselves promoting the fact that there was a college football game at the stadium and there wasn't 90,000 people at the game. To Columbus that was the funniest thing to happen in town since who knows when. The media was very sarcastic about the game.

Another major sideline about the game was how the Athens merchants hollered and screamed about losing a home game from Athens. I don't know if anyone up there says the same thing today when home games are moved to weeknights now to please ESPN. That would have the same effect on Athens' merchants.

Another major point is that this was only the first time out of the box, and was against an opponent that wouldn't draw anyway. Most events take time to build up a following. There was no attempt to make this game a regular event.

If they could set up an annual game between OHIO and Kent State for Black Friday in Columbus Crew stadium I think it would be a winner. Ohio has 30,000 alumni in metro Columbus, double the amount than what they have in all the counties that comprise Southeast Ohio. A huge local alumni presence, close enough for the local Athens fan base to drive up and do some Christmas shopping and more convenient for most of our alumni across the state to attend then making a game down in Athens. No issues about hotels if you want to stay the night in Columbus. Alcohol served in the stadium. It sounds like a great way to juice up the season ticket packages. As long as the game sells at least 12,500 its better than what sales would be on either Ohio or Kent's campus. Kent is a huge school that could bring a nice crowd, so realistically 8,000 to 10,000 Bobcat fans would be enough interest to make this happen. ESPN might want to bump this up to a game on the deuce instead of ESPNU with it being played in large market Columbus. I wouldn't move the game with Miami off campus but with Kent it makes perfect sense. Then Ohio fans would have a third major regular season series to look forward to beyond Miami and Marshall.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

I just don't see this working at all.

How about the MAC takes Thanksgiving week off and finishes the following weekend?
