You have to average 15k per game once every two years?

What do we average?

More than that.  We actually have  fans show up for most of our game.  I'm not worried about Ohio meeting that requirement.

BTW, I was in attendance at that Kent game they showed in the article.  I got cold just thinking about sitting out in that weather.

This rule needs to be enforced. An easy way to improve the conference.

I've heard there are alumni groups that buy up tickets at Eastern Michigan and try to give them away so that it meets the attendance rule and that is pretty bad. But for an athletic department to actually admit it buys its own tickets and for it to be alledged that it does so after the season to meet attandance marks is really crazy.

Never waste a good crisis.....

Good opportunity for Steinbrecher and his lackeys to start cleaning this mess up.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I made the photo as well.  And I went to high school with the photographer.

That was a miserable day.

Eastern Michigan uses some money from their Foundation to fund Athletics. In the past, they've just transferred money via ticket purchases. BG has used normal sponsorship dollars to buy tickets leading to 33,000 attendance in a 25,000-seat stadium.

Put the NCAA requirements aside for a second because I think we can all see how flimsy they are. But this conference needs some sort of minimums in place for basketball and football. And I think they should be actual attendance as that will lead to actual dollars. The only way the schools in the MAC are going to improve is if they improve the support they receive from their very large student and alumni populations.

A real Commissioner would sit down with each school and examine their business plans for growing support in football and basketball. Is there any kind of "best practices" sharing? Where schools like Toledo and Ohio who have some level of support share ideas with other schools?

This is just another example of twisted minds spinning the rules to fit their predicament. The rules are never clear enough and I believe this is all by design because you're dealing with a segment of the society, ie colleges, that have government interference and regulations to deal with. If this was the private sector there would be clear requirements and none of this sloppy accounting, ie Enron stuff.
I'm not trying to play hardball here but we need to live by the rules and the rules need to be clear.

Oh, please.  You don't think that there's bad stuff in the private sector on a consistent basis?  You couldn't have worked in the private sector long and still hold such a pure view of it.  It's not like there are two different types of human beings, govt workers and private sector workers, with govt being slobs and private being wholly virtuous.  It all comes down to the individual.

Try this:  ask your private sector working friends if they think that their boss and/or their firm has significant elements of 'tone deafness.'

Not at all saying govt is pure..only that to think that private sector is much different from govt is not very sensible.

The "private sector" thing (god I hate that phrase) is malarky. I'm not sure how you can impugn all of academia based on Athletic department shenanigans.

Plus, I don't really blame these guys from KSU. They are doing their job...helping this thing limp along and not collapse entirely. Its up to the university higher-ups to tell them that maybe its time to let it go. Which is what they should do!

I've been of the opinion for a while that Kent should drop football. They just don't have enough of a community around the university to support a football team. Basketball has been great for them and they should just focus on that.

I wonder if there's any sort of exposure to criminal fraud charges given that the AD "earned" a $10,000 bonus for increased attendance.

A lot of organizations period surround themselves with yes men who get promoted by paying their dues. That is the old school way of doing things. The new school way is to apply methods and work as a team in an organization. People forget the government sector is still a business and since the managed care revolution of the early 90s has made all work beholden to period of performance and results like the private sector. The major issue in the public sector is the salaries have become way out of line with anything that is sustainable. Salaries should be 25% behind the private sector not 25% ahead of private industry as they are right now because its tax payers money we are talking here. It's going to take at least 10 years to correct the imbalance by holding public salaries flat. Raising tuition with the economy in zero growth to pay for salaries isn't responsible.
