I figured this needed its own thread. I mean, our best defensive player and punt returner might be gone for the season for crying out loud! Does anyone have the inside scoop on this?

Deep breath. The key is for Travis to get the care he needs for the injury. In 2010 the team lost their best player from each side, LB and NK. My hope is that he recovers well to 100%. The team will be fine, not as good as a Travis led unit but injuries happen. Get well Travis.

I disagree. The time to panic is NOW. Here's another question: has the team sought the help of any alternative healers? Perhaps the healing powers of crystals or a bit of reiki could be just what the doctor ordered.

The secondary isn't as good without him, but we still have a solid corps there. I'd rather he take the time to mend properly instead of blowing a year of eligibility playing at 50%.

In all seriousness, if Travis can't go we now are without both starting corners from last year. Who will be the starters? Bass? Fischer? Denton? Shaw? Granted we are stacked at safety...still this is a cause for concern. All those guys are relatively inexperienced and untested.

How is it possible that the only information we have is:

1.) Hurt shoulder
2.) Out indefinitely

Only our reporters (I should say "reporter" because there is currently only one) and fans would settle for an explanation that is so needlessly opaque. Our best defensive player may be out for the season...would OSU settle for the two measly scraps of info that Arkley has so unceremoniously dumped into our trough?

Carrie is done for the year..this is a recurring injury in that shoulder and the only sensible way to go is request the medical redshirt from the NCAA. I hear that a former starter at CB still has a shot at rejoining the team for this season so maybe things are not all dire. Either way the young CB's will have to step up but with GMoore and XHughes out there I like their chances of playing well.

Carrie's value to to the team goes beyond his ability to contribute on the field. You can tell that he is also a leader. You can also tell that he understands what the defense is supposed to be doing, so even if he is out because of surgery/injury, he can still help the team.

As for requesting a 6th year, I would think he would get it, but, having graduated, he would be well into graduate school. That's not a bad thing, just a little different than the usual situation. It also possible that he might forgo a 6th year, even if he gets it, in order to move into the draft, but I'm not sure he's high enough profile to get drafted without playing this year.

As for Omar possibly being able to rejoin the team, that would probably help the team with Carrie out. I'm not sure how that works, or at what point in the season he would be able to rejoin, so I'll just wait and see what develops.

Did this most recent episode with his shoulder come as a result of something in fall camp or is a chronic problem?
Any chance that he may play this year if he sits for a few games and has treatment? Is this the (re-) injury that he sustained last year at Rutgers? If the season is lost for Travis will the injured shoulder be repaired surgically?

Well, good luck to him on the surgery and rehab. He can still help the team by being on the sidelines, and working with the younger players this season. I'm sure we'll find out in time if he will return for a 6th season next year, or if he will try to go the NFL route.

Ok, I have a question, Why is it that every year we lose a player or players to shoulder surgery or some variation thereof. What kind of conditioning are these kids going through to keep getting the same 'types' of injuries year in & year out? Inquiring minds want to know.

Virtually daily the Akron Beacon Journal has been citing players - many of them key starters - from other schools lost to season-ending injuries during practice sessions.

Tough to condition yourself against a broken bone. More Milk? These are just injuries, accidents, freak events. Every team at every level deals with them this time of year.
The injury to Carrie is one he has a history with. Very unfortunate the kid has been a warrior since he has been here. Hopefully he can return next season. He leaves a huge void not only in the secondary but the return game.

I feel bad for Travis but know he will still make a contribution to this year's team with his leadership. I hope he is able to return next year.

Penn State is (like any team) has had their share of injuries in camp.
