A well written article about how some of the premier coaches keep two fingers on the pulse of college football and copy at will.

It reminds me that Frank and his staff have modeled OUr hurry up offense after the men of Troy's. That was of course after getting run out of the building in the New Orleans Bowl.

Not too many years ago, Albin, etc. were spending time with Rodriquez, too, when he was still at WV, and implementing some of that into Ohio's system. The system also has roots in the old Nebraska offense, obviously. Thanks to adding Coach Dixon, some of Spurrier's ideas are also part of the offense.

The offense has been evolving for a long time, and now it finally seems to be coming together as a complete system, dubbed by some the "frankenstein" offense. When you take bits from here, and bits from there, that's all good. It's when you combine all the pieces, and end up with an entire system that works, that you really have something. You need plays to probe the defense, and set things up, and plays to take advantage of what you find. You need plays to move the ball, and plays for bigger chunks when you need that. You need plays to wear down the defense, and plays to keep them off balance. You need plays that work against read and react defenses, and plays that work against aggressive ones.

For a long time, Ohio had a lot of plays in the book, but they worked better sometimes than others. Finally the whole playbook seems to be coming together into a complete system, and I feel like they have a plan to react to and deal with whatever the defense is doing. It's when you finally have that complete system that you really have something unique, and that's when others start copying you, instead of the other way around.

I remember reading somewhere that after Solich left Nebraska he studied a passing system somewhere.  I would love a rematch with Troy now.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I still chuckle everytime I watch Nebraska play. Because essentially the reason Frank was fired was because they said he couldn't or wouldn't evolve the offense away from the option. Yet the Cornhuskers are still unable to either discover or recruit a QB who can throw a legit forward pass. But man, Taylor Martinez is a heck of a runner aint he!!!
