That video is 17 years old.  Kind of reminds me of the local high school band here.  Boring and too high brow for my taste.  Give me some gold old marching like Fairfield Union, Johnstown or Jackson any day of the week and certainly the 110

Here is a more recent performance by the Marching Minutemen -- at The Big House in September 2010 ... the day after the band's long-time (33 years) director, George N. Parks, died of a heart attack in Cuyahoga Falls following a Friday night performance at a H.S. football game (en route to Ann Arbor).

Here is a story about the director's death.

What I will say about this band is that they are very, very different from the 110 ... and a welcome addition to the MAC!

The only thing that is a fact is that nothing is a fact.
If this statement is true, it is also false.

Never had much respect for bands that use xylophones...

I've seen crazier things happen.

UMass has one of the best college marching bands in the country, the difference is they are a drum corps style band which values technical difficulty and precision whereas the 110 is a show style band which values entertainment value with a looser presentation style.

Don't fall into the trap of trying to compare one to the other though, both styles have their own merits and are exciting to watch.

Agreed.  Show bands and corps style = apples and oranges.

Since we are still 13 days without football, I'll fall into the trap.  If the corps style is the same home show for 5-6 weeks without much variation--can you say BORING.  Not to mention the corps style loss of learning opportunities for each member as well as leadership opportunities for the squad and section leaders like helping members learn new songs, marching routines and the excitement of something new that 110 members experience in preparing for each new home game.  If the corps style is putting on multiple shows with new variations during the season than that can be very exciting .

Motivated marchers are the ones who enjoy their activity and that translates to pride in their effort and a quality show on the field.  Here's how to compare who is having more fun as members even though both styles likely have members working their backsides off:  what percentage of the marchers return for junior, senior and super senior seasons?  If UMass has lots of students who remain members every season before receiving their diploma than I tip my hat to them and give them respect for many hours of personal time they dedicate to their school.  If there are few who make it four or five years of marching than imo the members simply don't have fun, get bored and find other ways to recreate.  Picking on the Red Hawks band, they are corps and when Ohio last traveled to Oxford it was their homecoming--the announcer celebrated the band's senior members.  The band had one senior trombonist and not many instruments had multiple members--that says very loudly: No fun to be a member!

I was just messing with you. Of course the 110 is the best band in the MAC and the nation. I just love to get Bobcat's riled up - it's funny. Congratulations to the new 110 members, and kick ass this year! GO OHIO!

I say any qualitative ratings should be over-ruled by the number of YouTube hits registered.

The Few, The Proud, The Bobcats!

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

Yikes! I'd hate to see this method used to rule which is a better song: "Friday" by Rebecca Black  to "Rain" by the Beatles...

But I guess that's the way of the world now...

I don't endorse the furry lifestyle, but when the Bobkitten is involved things can change mighty quickly...

Well said. Nice to see another marching band in the conference who excels at what they do.

Sony, they used that tidbit about the 110 in a "poll" from my freshman year in the band (2007).  Looks like it's just recycled from a few years ago, haha.
