Very interesting. I thought he'd retire before then, but apparently not. Now that the program is "built", I don't see any reason it reverses. I think it will continue to improve - after all, each year the recruiting classes get slightly better than the year before. If Solich coaches until 2017, that is 6 more seasons. That may be enough time for him to get close to, or even pass Bill Hess, for 2d most wins at Ohio. He would need 58 wins in 6 seasons to catch him, not quite 10 a year. I

I am ready to name anything except Court Street after him.  If this season goes as planned he gets Court too.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Some details of the contract. To sum it up, Frank becomes the highest paid coach in the MAC.

Barring another visit to Casa, he'll get $742,000 this year.

I can see it now.  Going Uptown to get drunk on Solich Street.  Or should it be Solich Drive? Solich Avenue? Solich Place? Solich Parkway?

Solich parkway would probably be the most factually accurate...

Having a contract doesn't mean he can't retire, just sets him and us up long term and gets him his raises.  But I wouldn't be too surprised if he retires before the last year or two of that contract is up.

The key to the continued progress of our premier programs, IMO, is to retain Jim Schaus.  Lose him and all bets are off.  Keith Dambrot recently told an Akron reporter that Schaus is easily the best AD in the league.  I agree.

A. Swank complains about Jim's duplicity vis a vis the G&W Club in 3...2...1...

No question Schaus is pulling the right strings in his coaching hires and overall leadership.  With the program on the right track and Solich on board through 2017, but potentially stepping aside earlier - who would be a logical selection to follow him?  Is there a member of the "Solich tree" that would make sense.  Not implying a coach in waiting process, but Solich will probably look to have a say in who follows him.  Names to consider?

Totally agree. Although the scheduling could use a little work in both areas, but that's more or less up to the coaches. Schaus has been huge.

OK Drew, I'll take the bait.  Yes Jim accomplished what Tom Boeh wanted to do.  The G&W club is done and as a final act, created a $45,000+ legacy scholarship fund to award annual scholarship(s) to those unpaid support students associated with athletics (managers, trainers, etc.) to further their education at OU.  Jim tried to stop us from doing that but was unsuccessful.  As Love has posted out on more than one occasion, it's time to move on and simply remember the 54 year history of the club's financial and fan support for OU athletics.

That said, things are going in a positive direction right now.  As long as $15 million in student fees continues to be available, football and basketball continue to win and a president is in place who fully supports athletics, things will be just fine.  If one of those things changes dramatically, so could the fortunes of our athletic program.

As a parent of a current Ohio student and payer of the tuition and student fees, that $15 million is OK with me.  Seems like it's money better spent than some of the other fees I'm paying.

Watching the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels buzz downtown Cleveland right now in preparation for this weekend's Air Show and they are just awesome.

This side note may be germane to our discussion on the cost of athletics. After all, the Blue Angels are effectively very powerful advertising/recruiting tools for the military. The unit costs $37 million a year to run, per Wikipedia. I daresay Ohio has gotten more bang for the buck out of its athletic expenditures in the last couple of years.

I think many people look at the $15 million in fees and think "football", but remember that the $15 million is largely spent on things other than football, though if football went, some of those other things might go as a result. For example, a large amount is spent on women's sports, and if there was no football, they would not need the women's sports for Title IX compliance. If they kept the women's sports, and added other men's sports such as swimming, wrestling, etc. instead of football, the financial picture would not be better than the current one. Also, even if all sports were discontinued, there would still be fees for facilities management.

Alan - I'm referring in general to the tuition but most specifically to room and board.  My daughter stayed at Jefferson Hall and that place hasn't seen an improvement in decades, or at least it sure seemed like it.  I thought the place was a dump, although I do have to say that after having visited other colleges lately with my youngest daughter, Michigan, Ohio State, Pitt, Syracuse etc. crappy dorm halls aren't limited to just Ohio.  What I paid in room and board just seemed to be a lot for a dorm that is in no better shape than when I was down there in the mid-80's.  One important caveat to that though-shockingly, my daughter says the dorm cafetaeria food is outstanding!

Court fees when the commies up at City Hall send out the Police to charge me with a noise ordinance.  At least it is no longer a misdemeanor leaving students with a criminal record for bumping to the latest hits too loudly.

Alan:  I hope you know that Schaus (and Boeh before him) was simply following the administration's lead. Hub Burton told me years ago that the G&W Club was a thorn in the side of administrators for many years.  Ping hated it and wanted it eliminated, as did Glidden.  They said it was nothing more than a good-ole-boys club for people like Kenny Kerr and other locals who wanted to ingratiate themselves to the coaches.  I certainly agree with the good-ole-boy part.

Interesting stuff Mark.  I'd agree on the room and board charges.  Perhaps the biggest scam ever was pulled this year on students and their parents.  The school year is 3 weeks shorter yet room and board rates went UP.  And on the food front, the renovations and improvements at Nelson have been so well received that one of OU's chefs told me Wednesday night that students have been waiting 45 minutes to get food at some of the 8 food stations there.  One day the executive chef of the university actually was manning the wok station because they were so busy.  Far cry from the food we had in 1979 when I was a dorm director.
