ESPN has changed its programming and will no longer air college football games live on ESPN3.com

You can still watch games if your service provider has ESPNWatch, which many don't. I think the article said 70 million some have access to ESPN3.com vs. 40 million or so for ESPNWatch.

Bogus. I can't tell you how excited I was that nearly every game was going to be accessible for me via some form of watching. Now, to drop this bomb days before the season starts.

Living in West Virginia, I'll be able to watch @ Penn State on ESPN, but now no TV for N. Mexico St. (formerly carried on ESPN3.com), and attend the game @ Marshall.

Beyond that, it might be November before I can see the 'Cats play on TV again.

Is anyone else fired up about this? I guess if you live in Ohio maybe it doesn't affect you as much because you have FSN Ohio, STO, etc.

I may be in a unique position here, but I'm just so upset about this on the eve of college football season. I feel like I waited so long to have an opportunity to watch Ohio play. Now, they were set to play so many games on ESPN3.com, and it's been taken away.

I remember the days of following games via a picture of a football on a hash mark on Gametracker. This blows.

Yes, this seems to defy all logic, except the real possibility that ESPN is mounting a marketing "pull" campaign that impels their viewers to put pressure on their service providers to add WatchESPN.

Time Warner is my service provider and they don't carry ESPN3, so I've had to rely on T-H-E R-A-D-I-O feed for games that aren't on the satellite.

Thats not actually what it says. The article says

"The Worldwide Leader has elected to end the simulcast [emphasis mine] of sporting events shown on ESPN's cable nets [ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU] to ESPN3—a service available to 73 million cable subscribers—and instead restrict those online feeds to viewers whose cable provider subscribes to the WatchESPN service (which reaches about half as many viewers)."

I read that to mean that you'll no longer to watch games that are airing on ESPN via the internet. You'll still be able to watch them on your TV (if you have cable/satellite). Indeed, just in week 1 there are 19 games identified as ESPN3, as is our week2 game against NMSU. If you log into watchespn.com (I tried going to espn3.com and was redirected to watchespn.com) and look at the future programming options, there are literally dozens of college football games listed over the next month. I think all that this change means is that the ESPN3 games are going to be limited to ones that are not being carried on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU.

For the record, my time warner cable does offer watchespn, so maybe it varies by region? That may explain why I'm not seeing a difference, but it has been some time now that espn3.com and watchespn.com redirect to the same portal.

Pataskala - If you get cable TV from TW and it includes ESPN in the package you should be able to get ESPN3.

If you only have Road Runner you will not be able to access it.

I agree in your interpretation.  As long as the game was going to be on one of the ESPN TV stations it won't be simulcast, which shouldn't be a problem for most of us.  Just watch on your own TV or at a bar, this would only affect people sneaking it at work or something on the internet.  If a game was only going to be on televised on ESPN3 then it would still be televised live on ESPN3.

Your emphasis is correct.  This affects the simulcast of games already carried on the linear cable networks.  If you had access to ESPN3, you still have access to ESPN3, and their exclusive content, as well as the simulcasts of the entire ESPN GamePlan package (SEC Network, ACC Network, MAC Game of the Week, etc.).  What they're doing appears to be separating the TV Anywhere service (WatchESPN; simulcast of cable networks) from the non-linear digital network (ESPN3; exclusive events and simulcasts of GamePlan games, etc.).  It also appears the number of exclusive college football games on ESPN3 has increased dramatically again this year as it did last -- it's looking like every MAC contracted game that isn't televised may well end up there.

So, if you would've been able to watch the 'Cats against New Mexico State, you still can.  If you wanted to stream the Penn State game on a laptop or mobile device, you may be out of luck if your cable provider doesn't provide access to WatchESPN.

As mentioned, TWC does offer ESPN3, but they don't offer it to internet-only customers, just those who have TV & internet.

This still stinks.  I'm an AT&T Uverse internet customer and have been using my computer as my TV, for Bobcat games and general ESPN watching.

Even if I was willing to pay the exhorbitant rate for subscription television, there's no way anyone could install it on such short notice before kickoff in 23 hours.

I'll go to a bar to support OU Saturday (here in Kansas), but ESPN just lost a regular simulcast internet viewer here.  Hope the bean counters did their math correctly.

@Steven you may want to check http://espn.go.com/watchespn/blackout?id=559795 and see what it says to you, but I believe you actually could see our Penn State game being in Kansas per their FAQ.

If they're with TWC, you should have access to any networks you receive with your cable package.

I apologize for the panic-induced message. Thank you to everyone for making this clear. I have stepped away from the ledge.

What I understand now is I'll still be able to watch games like New Mexico State on my computer, because it's not going to be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. However, say if I wanted to watch Ohio-Penn State on my computer because I'm at work, I'll be SOL because it's being broadcast on ESPN and my provider doesn't support ESPN Watch.

That is correct.  However, as any rollout like this tends to have bugs, I would recommend testing an ESPN3 exclusive game tomorrow night just to be sure all is in order (check my listings for several options -- including the first MAC showdown of the year, Eastern Michigan and Ball State [blech]).

I noticed this last night. I usually watch SportsCenter/Baseball Tonight on my laptop before bed, but they weren't available.

If I'm understanding the release and everyone's comments correctly, this should only affect our mid-week games (11/1 EMU, 11/7 BG and 11/14 @Ball State). Looks like we'll still have full ability to watch ESPN/2/U online all day Saturday.

Sounds like if the game begins before noon local time on weekends, or before 6pm local time on weekdays, you should be able to watch the entire game, even if the game crosses that line.

So, for Penn State, this should only affect ESPN3-only users in the eastern time zone.

I used to be able to view live and replayed streams on ESPN3, but on this new watchESPN site, everything is locked with a little key icon next to it.  I have time warner for tv and internet, so I can't figure out why I can't view anything.  Anyone run into the same issue?

Try going through the authorization process again if you can, try clearing out browser cache and cookies, if all else fails, try tweeting at @ESPN_FanCentral

For some reason, it didn't ask for my time warner login until about the 5th time, then it finally worked.  Good to go and it was awesome to watch the replay of today's game!
