I don't buy that.  Not the fact that the Cats win by three and unless you're Doc Brown there's no way of knowing but the fact that the TD was a fluke or as some might say, lucky.  Luck is nothing more than doing the things you need to do to put yourself in a position to take advantage of things that happen.  A few years  back my daughter won a luxury car in a sales contest drawing.  There were over 550 entries and she had 16 of them based on the number of new contracts that she had signed.  Was she lucky?  Not really.  What she did was sell enough business (doing the things she needed to do) to put herself in position to take advantage of her number being drawn.  Had she not signed any contracts she couldn't have been "lucky."  The same with the TD.  The receiver continued to run the route (doing the things he needed to do), continued to watch the ball, and then ran it into the end zone.  Hardly a fluke in my opinion.  More like a well prepared athlete performing well and continuing to do the things he needed to do.

It was a play that went our way. Period. So it hit off of someone's hands. Happens all the friggin' time. Credit to Ryan Clark for staying with the play and handling the carom flawlessly (unlike the manner in which the ball was handled at the very snap of the play), then making a couple of jock-separating moves to turn it into a crucial TD.

It was a significant play, but no more so than the blocked punt which shouldn't have happened and the two missed FGs -- all special-team boo-boos that need corrective action. Let's see, those boo-boos were 13 points, six we didn't get and seven Penn State did as a result of our so-called blunders.

Much has been made of the two Penn State injuries. Fact is, the Nits were getting stuffed before Bill Belton and Stephon Morris had to leave.

Look, there were predictions everywhere that they make predictions that this game had an Ohio "W" written all over it. It's just hard for many people to comprehend that "little Ohio" could actually have a football team that is "that good."

The point to me is that their defense didn't lose anyone of significance to transfer and was supposed to be the strength of the team.  21 points in the second half, tons of possession time, a majority of the yards gained against the vaunted defense in their house...............that is the story.

The Bobcats won a game;  Penn State did not lose it.

You can't pick and choose plays to take out of the game. At one extreme, suppose you leave the "fluke" in, but take out the blocked punt and the two missed field goals? Does that make it 30-7? For the other extreme, suppose you take out the "fluke", and Penn State's fumble on the opening drive, and the fumbled punt. Does that make it 14-21? Interestingly, the actual result was about half way between these two, meaning that breaks didn't determine the outcome, because half were in Ohio's favor, half in PSU's favor..

Al is right, by the way. Catching a deflected ball is not that easy. You not only have to be in the right place, you have to adapt quickly to a sudden change in the flight path, and in Smith's case, he did it while he was already airborne. Give him some credit for making it look easy.

Whenever people talk about luck, I'm reminded of this game of backgammon I once played. The opponent got a crummy roll. If he played it right, he might still win if he next rolled double 5s or double 6s. But, totally disgusted. he played it carelessly, leaving only 6-6 as the possible winner. What did he get next roll? 5-5 of course.

My point? Sure, people sometimes get lucky and beat 10-1 odds. But if they hadn't been playing things right before then, the odds would have been 10 to none.

A lot of times, winners get lucky because they have put themselves in a position where getting lucky could make a difference.

I generally agree with what Al said here.  I'll add that in the past I've usually seen these so-called "fluke plays" go against Ohio.  I was very happy to see Ohio in a position to take advantage of a funny bounce of an "almost intercepted" pass.  As Fred Taylor, the late OSU basketball coach was fond of saying, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.  Finally, TT's pass was high enough that it took a very athletic move for the PSU player to even barely touch it.  A little lower trajectory and it would have been an easy interception.  Any higher and it would have sailed into the end zone.  This fluke wasn't as flukey as it looked.
