Kudos to their fans for being gracious hosts. We were welcomed and thanked for coming to visit their stadium by several different people. During the game, they cheered for their team without badmouthing ours. Even in defeat, they were not rude or mean on the way out of Happy Valley. Obviously it was a great day to be a Bobcat fan, but the tone of our trip was set well before kickoff. I'd go back to Happy Valley in a heartbeat.

Same here.  Very polite folks.  I was most impressed by their crowd during te game. They were absolutely silent when PSU was on offense.  It was like a tennis match.  I thought it was impressive.

I would have to echo the remarks here about the sportsmanship of the PSU fans.  We had one couple come up to us before the game and ask if we had been welcomed yet to State College.    We said no, and they gave us a warm hand shake and welcomed us to their campus and said that they hoped that we would have a good time there.  This couple, even older than my wife and I, were wearing some kind of buttons that said something like "Official Welcome Volunteers."  (That's not exactly the wording, but that was the meaning.)  After my encounter Friday (see a previous post) in the Wal-Mart parking lot near where we were staying, I was a little bit worried, but as it turned out needlessly so.  The PSU fans we saw were very sportsmanlike, even in defeat.  My wife and I were impressed.

+1 Can't tell you how many people around campus after the game and into the evening stopped to congratulate us, tell us what a good team we have and wish us an undefeated season.  Pure class all the way.  Thank you Penn Staters for a memorable experience.

Nicest group of opposing fans I've ever encountered. Can't say enough good things about State College and Penn State fans. They were classy even after the win.

+1 here and to all posts above. Their fans were so gracious and friendly I was amazed. I found myself wondering if they were going to extra lengths to be welcoming and friendly. Even in the congested traffic and roads into and out of State College and the parking lots - which "congested" puts it very mildly. I have had more issues w/our own fans at our games when it comes to getting in and out of lots than I had there!

Pretty stark contrast to the message board troglodytes.

But I've never said anything on this board that comes close to what I read on the PSU board this week.

Cruel, but good word usage.

I was listening to Colin Cowherd the other day, and he pretty much called the Penn State fanbase delusional.  I wasn't at the game and have had very few encounters with PSU fans (all enjoyable.)  But their message boards... delusional.  For the most part.

Message board fans are not representative of the entire base, and tend to be more rabid, and yes, delusional. That's what makes bobcatattack special. The fans here, though rabid, are reasonable, and come off online as nice as in person. Only a couple that I can think of come off the other way.

The PSU message boards before/after the game reminded me very much of the Nebraska message boards after Callahan was hired before/after his first few games. Before his games, the message board fans were all talking about how, thank goodness, the old ways were gone, that now there would be a modern offense, that they were at last unfettered from the bad coaching of the past. Once the team actually started playing, reality interrupted that idyllic dream, and those that had touted him the most loudly often quickly became the harshest detractors.

Football is, in the end about blocking, and tackling, and fundamentals as much as it is about x's and o's. Coaching, and leadership, and organization, and ability to motivate players and build team cohesiveness still count. Delusional is thinking that any quick-fix is going to change things instantly. O'Brien may or may not turn out to be a good head coach, but his career success or failure will be built over a term of years, not weeks. PSU fans for the most part agree that he was out-coached this week, but is it surprising that he was? Solich is a very good coach, and to be honest, a much better head coach today than he was back in 1998. I hope for O'Brien's sake that he comes across better in person than he does in his press conferences or he may have a difficult time motivating his players, and building team cohesiveness. That's more of a threat to his long term success than the x's and o's, where I'm sure he'll be fine.

I would definitely consider myself delusional.  My twitter feed has been promising an undefeated season for months.

Otherwise though, I consider myself a pretty nice individual.

This is true, and Ohio athletics has made me look very smart lately.  The term "golden age" fits well here.

Really glad to hear all these positive experiences with the Penn State fans.  This is one of the reasons I don't think O'Brien is the long term solution there.  He doesn't fit in general much less when you're trying to emerge from under sensitive circumstances like these.

Between his comments during the prep meetings caught on camera, the way he handled commenting on the transfers and the way he handled the post game handshake and presser, I really don't think he's the face Penn State needs...

Woke up earlier this morning to this text  from a Penn State grad who's family was and is close personal friends with the Paterno family as well as the former Penn State administrators:

"Just got home.  Great win for your Bobcats.  That is a tough, quick football team.  I thought we had you handled but you guys kept your poise.  The better team won.  Your fans were great too."

Have gone to many stadiums for college football and have never been impressed and treated  with the courtesy, politeness,  friendlinessand respect  from  fans  as we were at Penn State.
Wewere welcomed by many - many fans for coming to Beaver Stadium (youngand older).
We were asked by many fans:  Do you need any help?  Is everybody treating you nice?  Do you need any directions?  Wife was hugged by a PSU fan for being there - they were  just plain nice!  A group of students asked us if they could help us with anything.  Upon leaving - fans were polite and heaped praise on our team and band.
Wish PSU and their fans  the very best!!!  Hope they can  overcome the penalties imposed by the NCAA..

I felt kind of bad for Penn State fans until I started reading their message boards the last couple of weeks.  Jaw-dropping is the best term I can use.

I read LC's narrative and, while it's directly about football, to me it's about business in general and life itself.

Not only were the PSU fans hospitable, by all accounts, but what other road venue plays a Bobcat growl on the PA system between plays? Now that's a gracious host.

The visiting fan experience was like no other place I've been. Absolutely nothing like I might have thought if I went based on the message boards.

Marshall fans have been pretty nice to us. I'm looking forward to the trip to Huntington. I'll take my wife and boys and be surprised if we encounter any problems.
