To be fair, I made the same observation about our tackling at times last year.

And if they're planning their game plan based on Rutgers last year, you have to figure they're going to look at what Sanu did to us.

I don't see the disrespect. The "what do they have on us?" comment was referring to the fact we have no tapes on their offense. Which we all know is true. Let's drop this inferiority complex that really shouldn't exist at this point.

You know what Frank Solich likes most about coaching in the MAC? While he gets older, his coaching competition stays the same age, man.

I don't have any problem with what he said. It's just that he was such a smug ass with his tone, granted, it's the coaches room, but he was obviously grandstanding for the cameras.

Our tackling was horrific at times last year. That has to improve and Coach Solich has said as much.

The bulletin board material is "These kids have no interest in that" has he watches the defender get blocked out.

My take is he is basically saying, that the Ohio defense is not attacking the bigger blockers to get to the ball carrier. It is up to the Ohio defense to change is mind on Sept 1.

Regardless of if he meant disrespect to us (which I'd say it's pretty obvious he did.. but I could really care less...), it's pretty dumb of him to make those comments, and provide such easy bulletin board material.  That's something you'd expect out of a freshman receiver or something.. not a head coach of a Big 10 team...

"These kids have no interest in tackling." as a declarative statement is something you would NEVER hear BB say of an opponent on tape during game week.  He is the most plain vanilla interview during game week, and usually pumps the tires of an opposing team no matter their record, so O'Brien isn't paying much homage to the Belichick way, at least in that clip.

I hope Grooms takes that quote to Fast Signs and hangs it above the locker room exit.  I'll pay the bill for the banner.

The Few, The Proud, The Bobcats!

And for the record, I hate tOSU, and Ricordati and Torgerson are DB's.

"This isn't just another walkover from the MAC." Kirk Herbstreit, another DB, on College Football Gameday

losing to a MAC team any year can be a season ender, but losing to a MAC team THIS year for Penn State? that tough guy talk for the cameras tells me he's concerned.

Yeah....I'd cut out this part of the video and rerun the same clip and make my own video..."these kids have no interest in tackling"...."these kids have no interest in tackling"......"these kids have no interest in tackling"   over and over and over again adnauseum.

Then I'd finish my clip with Ohio tackling highlights like the temple dude we drove horizontal...or tackle highlights last year from Keller and Kristoff.

The thing is, you could tell from the look on his face that he didn't really believe it. He was so smug and cocky about the fact that Ohio has no film to watch, when he says "its going to be a real battle", it doesn't have the ring of truth at all.

Clearly Ohio is going to have to make adjustments as it goes, but in the end, sound defense is sound defense. I certainly hope Ohio shows that they do have an interest in tackling, and that they can "tackle real well".

The good thing here is that Ohio does have some good players on defense, and I think they can take this critique to heart, and be a better defense for it. Hearing it from his mouth may make a lot more difference than if an Ohio defensive coach tells them they need to improve their tackling fundamentals, and that will make a difference not just this game, but all season long.  I'm willing to bet there will be some good licks put on some PSU players though.

Here's a link to a transcript of the O'Brien press conference. The sarcasm is surely dripping off in the second answer, when when he talks about how he is going to "go over ...the different things that I think this fantastic Ohio team is going to do to us...". Ummhmm. Sure, Bill. Ohio is a solid team, and they will compete, but no one has ever called them "fantastic" or implied that they are going to just "do things to you". Later in the interview he tones it down, and when he specifically talks about Ohio, and says the usual coach-speak.

We don't deserve their respect until we start beating "premier" teams.  We played poorly at Rutgers last year. If we put in the same type of effort on Saturday, Penn State will win by three touchdowns.  I hope Solich and Co. have been able to convince the team that winning a small-time bowl game is only a first step.

I don't really see the disrespect here either.  Arrogant?  Sure.  Disrespectful?  Not really.  He could have put it more "politically correct" because he was being filmed, but it's not like he's incorrect about our tackling (sans the interest part, which I'm sure is now official bulliten board material)

I don't know anything about you, but this comment is very ignorant.  Ohio did play poorly against Rutgers last year and still had an opportunity to win the game.  They lost by 12 points, far less than 3 touchdowns.  Rutgers also had a pretty good team, with a decent offense that averaged over 25 ppg.  If our sub-par performance paired with a strong offense only led to a defeat of 12, I cannot envision how an average offense (Penn State) blows us out by three touchdowns.  The defense of Penn State is their strength, not their offensive firepower.  They may win, but it will not be by three touchdowns.  That much I feel certain about.  For the record...Penn State's offense last year averaged less than 20 points per game, less than three total touchdowns.

The line before it "I know this is a grizzled, veteran team, but sometimes they don't tackle well" was harsh, and probably not politically correct, but it was to the point. That comment, as I said, hopefully the team hears, and uses as motivation for continuing improvement, in which case the there will be no lapses like last year's Ball State or Buffalo games. The "no interest" was piling on, and unnecessary.  It was arrogant, sarcastic, and disrespectful, and gives a glimpse at the kind of person he really is.

The only comment I will make in his defense is that he is no doubt used to looking at film of better quality opponents. If his Nittany Lions are playing at the same level as the Patriots, and McGloin is playing like Tom Brady, it will be long day for the Bobcats, because the Bobcats are not the New York Giants. If, on the other hand, Penn State plays like a college team, Ohio has a shot.

I'd also like to say that I am impressed with the restraint the Bobcats have shown. They have been nothing but complimentary and respectful about Penn State, and even in reply to this, Gerald Moore gave a first class response, that it was just his opinion, and that as a coach he was entitled to have one.

I hope he's ignorant enough to think that Penn State is like the Patriots.  That would be perfect.

Side note/consipiracy theory:  While the chances of this are highly unlikely, I think there's a possibility that he's being arrogant as a (small) fascade.  We're dangerous on offense.  Our defense is going to be good, going against an offense that will be down from an already mediocre offense last year.  He may be arrogant, but I doubt stupid is one of his traits.  He knows that this won't be a walk in the park.  This first game can set the tone for their season as high as emotions have been.  Win and everyone is behind you.  Lose to Ohio, a team that many of your community see as an inferior team, and you could be in trouble.  He needs to look confident to the players and community to keep some semblence of a "status quo" in State College.  I think that this is highly unlikely, but I don't think it's out of the question.

Think of the cliche "what have you done for me lately?"  We haven't beaten a big name team (like the one he's coaching) for some time.  Temple?  Beneath them.  Utah State, one of our biggest victories because of our history?  Beneath them?  Northern Illinois, Marshall, every other team you can put on our list we've beaten the past few years, beneath them.  Yeah, we played Rutgers tough.  But do you honestly think that O'Brian thinks the Big East are peers to the Big Tendozen?
