In their first game, against Sacramento State, the play selection was 40 runs, 22 passes, but on the 14 completions, they gained 367 yards and 3 TDs. That is an average of over 26 yards a catch, and 16.7 yards per attempt. His passing efficiency rating is surely leading the country, or close, at 248. I'm guessing he likes to throw down field, as opposed to the short passing game PSU used.

Could be.  Or it could be that Sac St is just a poor tackling team.  They were 4-7 last year, so they don't appear to be even mediocre.

  Whoa.

NMSU didn't have a lot of success running the ball at all, 2.5 yards per rush in those 40 attempts.  Sac State may been betting incorrectly that their DBs could guard NMSU man-to-man.  I'm not sure.  Regardless, if Ohio's D comes to play I think holding NMSU well below the 49 points they had yesterday is possible.

Another note, NMSU benefited from 3-0 turnover margin yesterday, just like Ohio did vs. PSU.

Sounds doable to me. I'm hoping there will be plenty of PT for guys like Vick, etc that we haven't seem much of, yet.

Not much to be found on their message boards. My first instinct is to be concerned about our secondary and their potential passing attack. Penn State never really tried  to go deep on us; in my mind we remain untested in that regard. Our secondary went from a strength to probably our biggest weakness. I'm certainly skeptical of a 21 point spread.

My  prediction is a win. This team has had plenty of let-down games over the recent years; I don't believe this will be one of them. However, I'm not ready to predict Frank giving us an extensive look at the depth chart. I'd love to see Vick get some PT but I'm not so sure the game will be that comfortable.

I only recall 2-3 deep pass attempts by Penn St. In both cases they were dropped balls/uncatchable. Throughout the first half, it looked like we were content to get beat under, to keep Penn State from beating us deep/getting behind the coverage after a catch...a strategy that proved quite effective. I still haven't seen any NMSU footage, so I'm not sure if their ridiculous passing numbers (~25 yds/completion and ~16 yds/attempt) were a result of bombing away or a result of HUGH yards after the catch following a short passing/screen game.

This week will provide the ideal test for the eyepatch metaphor. On the heels of an important victory, and with a traditional rival the following week, it could be all too easy for the players to either bask in last week, or start thinking about next week. Meanwhile, some toughs from NMSU see the eyepatch, and have other plans; they want to see just how tough Ohio is.

Will Ohio end up in the ditch this week?

Arkley mentioned on Twitter a short time ago that Xavier Hughes has been cleared by Solich to play, so that should be a big boost for the secondary.

That's a shocking opener to be sure but speaks volumes about our D, I think.  24-3 doesn't sound unreasonable at all, does it?  But I expect much more offense than that.

That plea again - please stay for the second half, kids, no matter what the score is.  This is a team worth watching and as a 40+ year fan, believe me that these are heady days.

NMSU's current QB came into the game late (due to injury of the starter) last year in Las Cruces.  He shredded our secondary in the fourth quarter on two consecutive drives, as I recall.  He was really good.

Agree with SBH. Not sure how we are a 21 point favorite. I saw some of the NMSU Game on Altitude and they are much better without question. Also watched NIU, Toledo and BGSU. We cannot afford to lose focus on any of the teams we play. We catch a break in not seeing NIU and Toledo during the regular season but the BG Game will be a battle.

21 points is doable.  I have little doubt that we're going to be able to move the ball on their defense.  Running game will have a big day.

Their passing game worries me.  We need to get pressure on the quarterback and stick the recievers.  Do that and we'll coast.

Herd fan here.  This guy's very right.  I distinctly remember as a student at MU in the 1990's leaving at 1/2 time.  Our "rule" was that if we were up by 28 points or more, at the half, we did not return after halftime.  Now, after 8 years of humiliating blowouts and crushing close calls, I yearn for the days of a "boring" game where we were winning by a million at the 1/2.  The dark days will return...they always do, sooner or later, for everyone.  Enjoy this OU team now...because they are damned good.

Like I said the other day.  Visit HerdFans.com and look around.  Just about everyone there has the entire MU season hinging upon the 9/15 game in Huntington.  Y'all should too...beat MU and 13-0 is a very real possibliity.  Has OU ever been Top 10, by the way?   Just curious.

New Mexico State is FBS level and we played them last year. They improved a lot as the season went on last year. This isn't an FCS cupcake. They got FBS talent on their roster.   How do we handle success and the coming off an emotional win.

Two words:  Focus and intensity.  Think back to the Marshall game last year.  I was in the "tunnel" of students and when you looked at our players you could see a look in their eyes that said they were going to absolutely obliterate anything that stood in their way of a W.

I want to see that Saturday night... and every week until the season is over.

Isn't our defensive line coach a former NMSU coach? I may be mistaken, but if he is I'm sure he can offer some insight into the NMSU squad. Also I'd bet he would have the defensive line and co. focused because I'm sure he wouldn't want to lose to his former team. I'm not trying to sound over confident but rather I have faith that the team won't look ahead. When Tettleton was interviewed after the PSU game he was almost instantly focused on the Aggies. In Relentless, Carrie was also a charismatic captain to the DBs and the rest of the Defense. So at the end of the day, I'm positive they, the other captains/seniors, and the coaches will all keep this team focused whether if they are playing  PSU, NMSU, Norfolk, or Miami.

This needs to become the new slogan around campus among the student body. Someone just start posting flyers all over the place, spraypainting walls, writing with sidewalk chalk, make t-shirts...I don't care. Enough people are going to start asking what it means and then figure it out and show up.

Like PSU, NMSU has some external distractions. With their conference folding after this year, they currently don't have any good options, so what happens to their football program is up in the air.

Here is a link to their coach's weekly Press Conference.

If Steinbrecher is in town Saturday huddled up with NMSU's AD in the press box, we can expect an announcement Monday morning.

As I predicted, the NMSU QB sits atop the national rankings for passing efficiency. The NMSU coach said that "he likes to throw it deep, but he's good at it". That will pose very different challenges for the Ohio defense this week. Notably we'll need to see some pass rush, to take some of the pressure off the young corners.  Speaking of corners, I wonder if Shaw will be back?

The NMSU coach is concerned about TT, and plans to try to keep him in the pocket. When specifically asked about Ohio's offensive line, and if about how physical they are he says "No question, but it's not like we're playing against USC's offensive line, either. These guys are mid-level offensive linemen...."

As far as the Ohio win at Penn State, he says "that Penn State team is not the Penn State when Coach Paterno had all those great teams so but you have to give them credit. They went in and beat a Big Ten team. So did we last year." (They beat Minnesota the week after losing to Ohio)

As relates to their offensive line versus Ohio's defense, he talks about how his Oline is 300+, and Ohio's defensive line is only about 250 "so from a physical standpoint, we're going to challenge them to be able to run the ball. Last year they held us to 6 yards rushing, and our offensive line and our running backs are tired of hearing it.....We're not going to back down, We're going to try to bring some physical this week".
