Unless I'm mistaken, when there is a high demand for limited product, prices go up.  (Economics 103)

Welcome to a program that is reaching for the big time.

I used to think it would be nice to retire in Athens.  Too many bitter ex-faculty, staff, etc. down there for me.

There are ten's of thousands of seats in Peden requiring no donation.  If he is pissed because he has to pay a donation for a premium seat, then he should stay home.

This is not hate.  This is from an elderly gentlemen who has sat in the same seat with his wife for many many years and this year had to pony up $50 a seat to get one of the new chair back seats.  Nothing more and nothing less and he clearly sees through the "donation" designation.  He would not be sending in the $100 except for the fact that he would like to continue sitting in the same pew in church.  To some that is a forced offering.  We've had this conversation many times in the past so we all know what the arguments are for and against.  The bottom line is that it is now necessary to pay to play like it or not.  Can't wait to see my AmEx bill next month.

Good point about the assimilation of donations and offerings.  There are dozens of churches in Boston that have family plaques in the pew boxes.  Most of these have names like Revere, Adams, Franklin, Kennedy and the like on them.  And I know this will come as a shock: they are the best seats in the house!  And the unnamed, open seating is in the back of the church and in the balcony.

Let's dump some tea in the Hocking!!!

And there is nothing forced about it.  He can choose to pay the donation, or not.  And Lord knows the new "O" is all of what, two sections by 30 rows?

And as for Hays' comment about the cost to student and how it relates to the original letter: the additional seat donation is due to the fact that the University required ICA to take LESS MONEY FROM STUDENTS this year.  So the fee is directly related to reducing the subsidy that Hays loathes.  Ironic, no?

I wonder if this person also complains about Ohio Athletics needing to generate more of its revenue rather that use student fees?  The mentality is changing among Ohio fans but some hold onto the past.  Its to be expected.  I try not to let it bother me to much.

I have noticed some jabs about the old Green White Club.  It was inevitable that it needed to  be replaced with a Fund Raising club and now we have the Ohio Bobcat Club.  This is how it works everywhere else for the most part.  Marshall has the Big Green, Virginia Tech has the Hokie Club, etc.  Change is tough sometimes and I think Ohio Athletics has gone above and beyond in doing as much as possible to make this transition as easy as possible.

Is it possible that we can compare Athens, OH to places like Boulder, CO and Berkely, CA? They like sports, but just not enough to care and put forth the effort and finances toward making it a consistent winner. It's weird, it's almost like its a town full of right-wing hippies, which is impossible but Athens somehow pulls it off.

You can find this same conversation going on over at HerdNation. East Side Prime I and II require a $50 Big Green donation. Chair backs on the west side require at least a $300 donation. High profile away game tickets are only made available to Big Green members and season ticket holders. Select scrimmages during the spring and fall camps are open to Big Green members only.

The packets just went out for the Vision Campaign as well. Hamrick is asking for a 5 year commitment to the campaign above what you already donate to the Big Green. Marshall needs to raise $20M of $30M privately to complete a new soccer stadium, multi-use indoor practice facility, Hall of Fame, academic center and sports medicine translational research facility. We have raised a little more than half of the $20M needed during the silent phase of the campaign. Bids are going out on the soccer stadium this month and on the IPF this winter.

We're also adding a third level to the press box at Joan C Edwards Stadium that will contain 4 new suites, new bathrooms, etc. Those are already sold and construction is set to begin right after this season in time for them to be ready by the start of the 2013 season.

Herd fans are slowly realizing you can't build and grow and not expect to be asked to make more of a commitment to the program. That's probably going to make some people upset but such is progress.

My wife had the same seats at UVA for 20 years including some really bad years with Sonny Randle.  If you think $50 per seat is tough to swallow try a new $1,500 fee per seat.

Does anyone else think it is odd that a person who complains about athletics being partially funded by student fees would complain when the athletics tries to get money from non-fee sources? It would seem more logically consistent if he favored this as a way to get money without getting it from fees.

Curmdugeons curmudge.

But, cut Alan Boyd some slack.  Appears he's a long time fan.

Steve Hays.  Jeesh, wonder what windmills he's attack if athletics didn't exist.

I don't understand how people are so upset about a donation.  It is the same thing as if ticket prices go up.  However, the department is doing it's season ticket holders a service by increasing it in the form of donation as opposed to ticket price.  With donation, you get additional benefits and it is tax deductible.  With just raising ticket price, you get nothing.

What product price does not increase with an increase in quality or demand?  This letter to the editor is classic entitlement.  This guy has supported football for years because he has enjoyed it.  Now after many years, he feels that he is owed something for all the years of loyal, unwavering support he has provided.  NO!  Get over it people!

How ridiculous. I bet this guy complained to McDonalds when the price of his morning coffee increased from .79 to .85 when using his Golden Buckeye card too.

The OBC donation is 80% tax deductible. We cannot build a bigger program by ignoring inflation and progress. I respect my elders and appreciate their support of the programs for many years before I was even born. I'll bet this same gentleman has not, however, done the math and figured out that the amount of the donation is almost exactly the price of the parking that he no longer has to pay for at each game for football and basketball.

Let's get to the truth on this issue and investigate this persons statement to see if what he stated is factual.
If this story is not true end of discussion.

I do think, as I am sure many of you have also thought, that with a successful season ticket prices, fees, or concession prices will increase next year. I have no problem with this. If you put a better product on the field people will pay to watch.

There are only 2 kinds of people in this world....those that love athletics and those that hate athletics....if you're apathetic then you belong to the haters.

Totally agree. This sort of seat licensing is the most efficient and fair way of paying for college athletics. And if Ohio keeps winning a lot of games, it will become a significant source of revenue. I guess people just don't like the term "donation" when they feel its built into the cost of the seat. They should just call it what it is: a PSL.

Disagree. Apathetic people tend not to stand in the way. They're on the sideline while the haters are putting up roadblocks. "The haters" could say the apathetics belong to the supporters, couldn't they? Because they don't help the hate cause.
