Not wanting to blow this out of proportion but after watching 2 games special teams have not been a strength.

  • Blocked punts
  • Blocked field goal attempts
  • missed field goals
  • dropped kick off
  • offsides on kickoff
  • kicking the ball out of frustration on off sides kickoff
The offense and defense have been the winning "two out of three" that Frank talks about so far.  Marshall is gonna be tough and after us.  So far no one else mentioning this.  I think we're all happy with 2 wins and we should be as we look strong but still have some things to work on particularly on special teams.

Thoughts on my feeling here?

+1.  In the past, special teams has been needed to win games.  I think we are in a place this season where we just need them to not lose the game.  That is our definite weakness as a team right now.  I look for Frank to demand a better performance from those that play on special teams.

I will admit that Wellers two misses against Penn State had me very worried.  But I think having a new snapper and holder might have been a factor.  There were some near issues last week too.  we really need this unit to be money from 45 in and lately it seems to be more like 35 and in.

The blocked punt concerned me last week not because of a missed block, but more because our blocker got run over. Plus a low snap factored in as well.

I don't count the blocked FG against because that was such a badly blown off-sides call there was nothing we could do.  that guy was 5 yards into the backfield when it was snapped.

I really thought our kick coverage was doing great until, of course, the return TD.  Sometimes athletes make plays, though.  They returned one on us last year too.  I was mostly disappointed because it allowed them to score in the 20s instead of us keeping them in the teens, where they so rightfully belong.

I think we have a new Special Teams coach as well. A lot of new on the ST squads outside of Weller.

I'm concerned about our FG protection. Granted the one gunner did appear to leave early on the blocked FG, but we seem to be under a ton of pressure this season by the time Weller strikes the ball. I don't know if it's a slow snap, a slow hold, a slow approach to the ball, or we're not blocking well, or some combination. But it is nerve-wracking watching our kick unit right now.

Penn State would tell you their their special teams are "Ficken Horrible"!  Also do not understand having a linebacker return punts and kickoff for two weeks.  They are not that shorthanded.

And despite all this, Weller was named the MAC East special teams player of the week for his 3-4 FGs and 6-6 PATs.

Lets remember also that when you put up 51 points, you're doing a LOT of kicking off. More chances at returns, more chances to break one.

72, you saved me starting this string. If you are Meatloaf, two out of three ain't bad. But the fact is, it football season, not a song. And unless the special teams buffoonery is correctible -- and corrected -- that aspect of the game will be our proverbial Achilles heel.

The announcers on the ESPN3 webcast said that our long snapper was taken from the wrestling team.  Does anyone know if that is correct, and if so why wouldn't we just use our normal center for these snaps instead?
