   * To whomever does the announcing during halftime (I believe he/she is the not the same as the game announcer), Portsmouth does not rhyme with south.

     * The quality of Peden concession stands has already been discussed here, but it was obvious last night that they are not equipped for 25,000 fans. Or even 20,000. Long lines, running out of items, a worker using a calculator to determine the total cost for a box of popcorn ($3.00) and large pop ($3.50) and then the change from $10. I expect my 5th-grade students to use mental math in such a situation.

    * My 5-year-old son, a huge Reds fan who has been to 6 Cincinnati games over the past two summers, told me midway thru (sorry, SBH) the third quarter that "this is the best night of my life." This was partly due, I believe, to receiving high fives from most of the players as they headed out to the field to start the second half. Only drawback for him was not being able to throw and catch his Bobcat football on Victory Hill due to the crowd and wet and muddy grass.

    * Speaking of Reds games, my wife wasn't sure why we can bring bottles of water and bags of peanuts into Great American Ballpark, but not into Peden.

    * Finally, anyone know what the status is for Derek Roback? Really liked what I saw of him at the end of last year and it looks like he is fourth team TE, at best, behind Thompson, Hill and Knight. Not a bad problem to have, I guess.

For what it's worth, maybe try the student entrances in the future? They allow unopened bottles of water in, with the fact they have water bottles and pop in the student park on the practice field...

When I was a student the concession stands often had church/civic groups working.  Are they still doing this?  It is a nice gesture but can affect the quality of the service.  How much could it realistically cost to overhaul the stands?  A few hundred thousand dollars?  Are we too remotely located to have an Aramark etc.?  Why not approach some of the local staples about setting up shop?  Goodfella's, O'Betty's etc.

It seems like a few hundred gallons of paint and elbow grease would go a long way around Peden.

Interesting thought. I questioned the young man about the necessity of using a calculator and he told me that he was in Algebra II. I was unable to determine which area high school he attends.

As far as I remember, they used to get volunteers/student managers from the various dining halls around campus to do concessions at the Convo. Not sure but I think they did the same at Peden. I doubt that would fill the need for workers on game day, so maybe church/civic groups are still used.
