Notre Dame announces they will join the ACC for all sports with the exception of football but will play 5 ACC conference games per season.

Looks like a small step towards full membership eventually...

Hey! Lake Michigan connects to the Atlantic coast....eventually....via Canada.......

Boise's waterways most certainly do not., though......unless you count the Straights of Magellan.....or unless global warming finally makes the 16th century dream of a Northwest Passage viable!

Also........imagine this scenario: ACC now has 15 basketball schools and needs to add another. UConn is a perfect fit for basketball, but football........not so much. If ACC says to UConn, "We'll take you, but not your football," the MAC wets itself trying to bring them on board, right?

Not sure we're ready for that Prime Time Play yet....

On the other hand........this really hurts the Big 10.
With the Big 12 TV deal, and now Notre Dame, quality options are becoming more scarce.

Well, I hear you but it doesn't matter.  TV market share matters.

The ACC says they're not taking any more teams. But I do hope that Schaus calls the Big East commissioner. We need a way to turn this recent stretch of success into something that provides a long-term positive impact. The only way to move the needle of Ohio Athletics is to get out of the MAC. We're probably not at the top of their list or maybe even in the middle. But we resemble their membership now more than we did in the past.

Given that this is Marshall Week, how about Ohio and MU to the BE as a package deal?

UConn wanted to join when Pitt and Cuse got invites but I heard BC blocked them.  UConn would be the natural fit though.

Ted you almost sound like The Optimist in this post, but I totally agree. What has the MAC done for Ohio lately? The time is now to get gone and leave the others in the dust. At the very least it will be an immediate boost in revenue to help with facility upgrades.

I agree as well.  While you may argue that we are not too good for the MAC, who cares?  With the game of conference musical chairs at the pace it is currently, it seems to matter more what you have done in the last five years more than fifty.  We would see an almost immediate impact across the board in our athletic department, ranging from fan turn out to the quality of our student athletes (merely speaking from a talent standpoint as we already have some outstanding human beings).

If we were able to receive an invitation I think our TV exposure would help its self pretty quickly.  While Rutgers or UCF are not USC or Texas, they are EMU or 'kron either.

There was a time when UC FB wasn't good enough for the Big East.  Look what a commitment, a few coaches and that move has done for their FB program.  I'd say make the call and let the chips fall where they may.  Worst thing is to do nothing.

Casper............I was going to use them as an example in my post......exactly my thoughts.

I wonder if Schaus has drafted a letter to the Big East commish or others to express our interest in joining their conference?

In honor of Marshall week I am reminded of the scene when Coach Jack L. was speaking with the president about petitioning the NCAA about the waiver to let freshmen play.  Drive to Kansas City (or Providence, RI) Jim!

Though it makes good "Hollywood," to the best of my knowledge the scene in Kansas City never really took place.  The real coach Jack was a very mild-mannered man, nothing like the man portrayed in the movie.  Of that I can personally attest.  Despite all this, I concur with your general sentiment.  It's time for action at the upper levels of the administration.

My point would be this:  If not now, when?  Things are looking mighty green for Ohio athletics.  I hope we are in even better shape in 5 years, but there is a very real chance that we peak in 2012.  We've been successful for years in our 2 major sports, and now we have 2 teams that look improved off last year but have a ton of Seniors and probably won't reach the same levels next year.  Whether it pays of or not, we have nothing to lose.  I think Schaus and McDavis have built these programs to continue to succeed with great coaching hires, but you have to capitalize on success while you can playing the pessimist role and assuming they will not continue to succeed at this level.

We aren't in a great TV market.  We know that and need to play on our other strengths, keying especially on a strong program.  Well, this looks like a strong program right now.

I've seen crazier things happen.

TV Markets are a big part of it, but I think the Big East is probably looking for corporate sponsorship more than anything else. That is something that will kill our chances in the long run. Unless some major stride are taken in getting as much sponsorship as possible. With our alumni network throughout the state, we're going to have to start looking elsewhere outside of SE Ohio. And if an announcement was made the Ohio went to the Big East, you could almost guarantee a boost in new donors. That could lead to further sponsorship also.

There really is nothing that wouldn't be good about the move other than with higher revenues comes higher expenses, especially travel in Ohio's case.

It would be pretty exciting to hear about getting an invite to the Big East in the coming weeks, but it's safe to say that I'm not holding my breath for anything.

I don't know how much of a hurry I'd be in to join the Big East anymore.

The sports wrtiers out here are saying that the loss of ND and the fact that ND is going to play 5 ACC schools in football every year shows how weak the Big Least (their word not mine) has become.

Some of the other comments from sprots writers:

                        A sinking ship
A shadow of its former self

Rutgers fans are besdies themselves for not getting out of the BE and with the loss of ND being out of options to leave.

Dreaming a little here, but what if we did win out and go 13-0 and then get the invite to a BCS Bowl. How attractive would we look being able to say that our men's b-ball team made it to the Sweet 16 and our football team just competed in a BCS bowl?  I know that is a long way off, but what if?

We could provide a regional rival for Cincinnati in football, and with Frank here for five more years, there's guaranteed stability with our program. Why NOT be a part of the new Big East? As someone mentioned, we fit the profile of the league now more than ever, and we could be an important part of the rebuilding of the conference.  Heck, we'd be a model university, with strong academics and a stable athletic program.

I feel like we have a long way to go to get into the Big (L)East...program strength alone doesn't buy your way into a new conference, and as much as we protest, that's not going to change the fact. TV Market Share and Sponsorship has a lot to do with it all, and being in a small town in the middle of nowhere doesn't help our chances.

That being said, I would love to see Ohio move out of the MAC. We DO have a strong program right now, and we need to capitalize on that. I just don't see Schaus making that move for another 3-4 years.
