If this thread on our HerdFans message board is true, then I really don't know what to say other than you have a great team; go support them.  The Ohio travelling contingency has always been almost nonexistent, but with the way ya'll thumped us last year I thought it might be different this year.

That is a pretty low number but there is a reason people do not like coming to your place and it is just not OHIO. The poster on your board states the case.

This is a problem we have that no one ever addresses.  When WVU plays Pitt, thousands of Pitt fans show up. When UVA pays North Carolina, thousands of fans travel.  Outside of Virginia Tech, WVU and Kansas State, we have virtually never had visiting fans show in meaningful numbers.

WHen my son played basketball for OHIO I had to literally hold one of my friends back from taking out several idiots sitting behind our bencn. I guarantee you he would have sent 3 of them to the hospital and ended up in jail. I had an unwilling officer intervene after listening to the thngs they were saying even he was embarrassed.

You guys are not very good hosts. Maybe the visiting contingents would come were the experience not so ugly. I like the way y'all overstate the facts. Really, you (collectively) think you filled more than half of Peden the last time we played?

If you think we are not a good host, then you have never been to a Herd football game.  Sounds like an excuse to me.  I was at Peden last year and I do not agree with the 75% comment in that thread.  I do know that there were thousands of Herd fans there though.  I would guess 5,000.  Every team across the country is going to get jeered from the home fans, but you won't have any problems if you'd show up.

And what the poster is referring to about us playing teams that do not travel well is not a reflection of OUR fanbase, it is a reflection of the fanbases of the teams that we are playing against as well as the geographical location of our opponents.  The poster is saying that we need to play teams whose fans support them and will help our attendance as we do for our opponents (Ohio) when our boys hit the road.

We took a couple thousand to Penn State last week. We have travelled well to other schools, like Ohio St, Miami, Kent and Akron. Most Marshall fans that I have encountered have been fine, but there are some that act like they learned how to be a host from WVU fans. I had two grown men behave like complete a**holes sitting near us 2 years ago in the Joan. I was not thrilled about bringing my kids to that game. I'm coming back with the hopes those two are sitting somewhere else.

We just sold out Peden vs. New Mexico State. I think our fan support is just fine. There will be far more Bobcats in Huntington than 113. Count on it!

Pretty sure Ohio athletics already sent the allotment back (way too soon) which accounts for 113...  I know a ton of students going, more than ever before.  More than went to Penn State.  And it is all going through the Marshall ticket office.

I've seen crazier things happen.

The tickets are $35 for the sidelines and $25 for the end zone plus handling charges. I hope OU brings a lot of fans since all ticket revenue will go to The Herd.

Seriously, I think you will enjoy the experience at MU. The MU stadium is light years better than Peden and more fan friendly in regards to restrooms and concessions. The restrooms at Peden are out of the dark ages. I know OU ran out of concessions by halftime the last time I was there for a game. That will not be a problem at Edwards Stadium.

This was a roadie I was hoping to make at the beginning of the season, but I'm going to have to be relegated to Internets watching. Wish I could make it.

That said, Bobcat fans could travel better.  Our presence at Penn State wasn't all that impressive and our presence at Ohio State a couple years ago was kinda pathetic.  Things are getting better, though. I think people are starting to realize what makes a program.

Is there anything being done to get students down to Huntington? I know the OZone isn't taking buses, but are there any carpool efforts?

I bet many students don't realize how close Huntington is to Athens. With the 6:30 kickoff you could easily watch a noon game, leave Athens in the afternoon, stay for the whole game and still make it back in time to celebrate the win on Court Street for a few hours.

It's easily the closest roadtrip we have this season. Someone needs to make that clear to the students.

I've always been impressed with the support Marshall fans give to their football teams.  They travel very well.  We'd drive up in the early days of the Motor City Bowl to see Marshall take on Mississippi or Louisville and see Marshall car flags and fans everywhere.   We enjoyed joining Marshall fans in supporting the MAC against those teams.  I remember some Mississippi fan held up a sign saying "Randy Moss who? " and it disappeared quickly after Randy's 80 yard TD reception.  The team and it's fans act like a big time program.

The winning tradition for Marshall Football certainly helps make it worthwhile for fans to travel with the team.  However, I also think there's also less competition for the "sports dollar" in West Virginia.  There's no major league sports team and only two Division 1A football teams.   For a sports fan in West Virginia, Marshall is one of the two top options to see sports at a higher level.

For Ohio University, few Ohio Alumni stay in Athens after graduation.  I think the town's population when college is shutdown is under 5,000.  The largest contingent go back to Cincinnati, Columbus or Cleveland.  There you have a combination of six major league sports teams (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA) and (unfortunately) OSU football/basketball.  There are also an overload of Division 1 colleges, including 6 from the MAC.  Combine the number of outlets for other high level sports within a small drive of their home and the fact that winning Ohio Football didn't exist for nearly 40 years and you'll find the average Ohio alum hasn't had a whole lot of reason to travel to see Ohio play.

Ohio fans will travel though when there's reason to see a marquee opponent and expectations for the team to compete.  Ohio had the largest and most vocal fan base in Nashville (by far) for the NCAA basketball tournament this year.  We were the only team out of the eight teams in that region to sell out our allotment of tickets.  In the Sweet Sixteen game in St. Louis, only Kansas had more fans than Ohio.

The football culture is changing. They had 2,000 travel to Penn State last week.  They set a record for home game attendance last night.  Only a couple years ago, few of my friends paid any attention to Ohio football.  Last night, I saw quite a few tracking Ohio's game on FB and watching the game on ESPN3.

For Marshall, I think it's a combination of "you can't get there from here" and not viewed as a marquee opponent.  It's 3 hours each way from Cincinnati and Columbus.  It's five hours from Cleveland.  Marshall's not the top 25 program they used to be or from a BCS conference.  It's just not appealing enough to make the effort.  And, as others have mentioned, there are a few Marshall fans who are a little overzealous.  Those fans are kind of like overzealous high school parents who never had an opportunity to leave the town they grew up in, so then their whole world becomes living vicariously through their children playing high school sports.  They become so classless that they'll do things like the Marshall fan at the 2009 Little Ceasars Pizza Bowl who kept making "whistle" noises that sounded very close to a referee whistle during Ohio offensive plays.

TWO YEARS AGO I HAD TWO CAR FLAGS RIPPED OFF AND MY CAR KEYED.  MARSHALL/HUNTINGTON POLICE SAID SORRY WE HAVE NO SUSPECTS.  SO IT COST ME $200.00 PLUS TRAVEL AND TICKET.  I WILL NEVER SET MY FEET ON HUNINGTON SOIL.  I WILL SUPPORT THE BOBCATS FROM AFAR!!

I HAVE BEEN TO MANY STADIUMS OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS AS I TRAVEL TO EVERY AWAY GAME AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS EXCEPT IN HUNTINGTON AND THIS INCLUDES BASKETBALL.  DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN THE MARSHALL ANNOUNCER SAID "THE OFFICIALS WILL GO OUT EXIT ?".   REFER TO DR. PING'S COMMENT AFTER A MARSHALL BB GAME,  "I WILL NOT ALLOW ANY FURTHER SCHEDULING WITH MARSHALL DURING MY TENURE"

MARSHALL UNIVERSITY IS NOT A GOOD HOST!!!!!!!

Too bad it does not carry over to the basketball arena, pretty horrible experience....out of 137 games I attended over the course of 4 years your fans were in the top 5 worst........ Willing to concede that I have never had the desire to head down to a football game there. Period. Irregardless of what bleacher report write Callos  says (and there is some controversy as to how many of the stadii he has actually attended if you read the comments) .....it will be interesting to hear what the folks who went to Penn State say in comparison after next week.

Well, if Bleacher Report says it, it must be true!

Like I've said before, every time I've been to Huntington, I or someone with me has been physically threatened. But please, keep talking about how well our fans travel. You certainly can't talk about having the better team, so you take what you can get, I suppose.

And more than 50% Marshall fans at Peden last year? Don't make me laugh.

Sounds like many of the Herds' fans aren't pleased with their stadium experience. From one extreme of  "drunks" , "idiots in aisles", "foul language", "open containers" and a "Dirty hair, filthy jeans guys taking tickets" to the other extreme of "security nazi's" strip searching baby carriages.

It's worth the trip if you can make it, but ONLY because it's a big game. Huntington is a poor man's Morgantown in terms of how opposing teams and their fans are treated. I've been there three or four times for football games (some in the stands, some in the press box) and I never once had a memorably positive experience. I'm not factoring game results into this, either. I'd rather hang out at the Mos Eisley cantina than make a trip to Huntington. Both can be described in similar terms. Their fans were smug jerks BEFORE they left the MAC. I can't even imagine how bad it is there now that they've been breathing in C-USA fumes for the past few years.

Keep making excuses not to drive less than 2 hours away to see your team play.

If you wanna talk like a big time program, you need to act like one... buck up and go support your teams in away games and quit whining about how the other team was mean to you.

You shouldn't have any problems in Huntington, that's all I'm gonna say.

Everyone I've ever heard from people in CUSA traveling to Marshall  has had nothing but great things to say about it.

I suppose it's your choice though.
