There has been a lot of chatter on the board about how Marshall fans treat visiting fans and I was interested in getting some feedback.

My experience tonight was fine. I did hear a Marshall fan thank a couple Ohio fans for making the trip which I thought was very classy. The only negative experience was the guy that kept yelling "here kitty kitty"! The guy was obviously wasted but sobered up enough to stop it when Ohio took the lead in the 2nd quarter.

For those that did not make the trip due to past experiences, you missed a great game!

I had a great time, and the Marshall fans were very pleasant.  I was surrounded by them on three sides and didn't get one dirty look or negative comment.  I might as well have been sitting next to Ohio fans (minus the cheering for our team).  I will be going back to Huntington again!

No complaints here. Fans here weren't nearly as talkative/welcoming as they were at Penn State, but I didn't hear anything negative.  We went to the chili cookoff on 3rd Ave before the game and had a nice conversation with one of the cooks. He was at the game last season, but said he left at halftime to explore campus. Said he loved Baker, and he was in Athens once for Halloween and had a blast.

Other than him nobody approached us.  Unlike at Penn State when before the game nearly every tailgate offered us drinks and welcomed us to Happy Valley and some even congratulated us after the game.

Mrs. Oldcat and I found the MArshall fans very nice just as we did two years ago. We had no issues at all even at Fat Patty's where Ohio fnas were few and far between. I was curious as to why some Marshall fans chose to sit on the fringe of our section at the very end of the stadium which were obviously the worst seats in the house but they caused no problems. It was a great scene at the conclusion of the game. TT throws the game ball into the stands which I took as a sign of how he appreciated our efforts in cheering them on. It was fiting that the game ended in front of us. The 110 played Light Up and Long Train for us before dispersing and we walked to the parking garage without incident. It was a great evening. We talked all the way home about the highlights of the game, the big plays, the times the defense stiffened and turned the Herd away at a time when our backs were against the endzone. Defense got pushed around but they still won the game. I was rather curious as to why we took the delay of game penalty at the field goal asa we had three timeouts in out pocket. Maybe it was decided the angle was better five yards further out but it appared to me that we just kind of blew it. Fortunately it didn't phase Mr. Weller. Lots of good memories from this one. Those of you that were there, and we were fairly well represented, saw a great contest.

For the most part everyone was really nice. We sat endzone with all the marshall fans. In the first quarter i stood up on a big defensive 3rd down and the man behind me grabbed my shirt and pulled me to the ground and sad i shouldnt be standing. He later apologized and said " i should not of done that". Other than that We were treated fine and had a 20 minute convo with a herd fan as we were leaving the stadium.

I live here in WV, but it's not like anyone would know that seeing me in my Bobcat gear to treat me like a local. No one acknowledged me negatively. I pre-gamed at Fat Patty's with my wife, decked in her Marshall gear -- a Marshall grad. We had two extra seats and the table of Marshall fans next to us asked if we could spare them. We obliged and when the man recognized me in hunter green and her in kelly, he said "A house divided huh?"

I sat in section 113 surrounded by Herd fans. No one said anything to me when I cheered appropriately during our cheerful moments.

The one negative I would say was a man, obviously intoxicated, about 10 rows back, who yelled "cheaters" several times at Ohio during penalties. At one point, he yelled it thinking there was a personal foul on Ohio, but it was on Marshall. At that point, I turned around and said "Who's cheating now?" only to get a couple laughs from surrounding Marshall fans, because they knew the guy was drunk too.

Honestly, I felt invisible wearing my Ohio gear. No one batted an eye or gave me one bit of disrespect.

I will say, the most joyous moment of the evening was walking out of the Joan and it was silent as could be. It was the quietest exiting of 30,000 people ever.

Very happy to see these positive reports of Marshall fan behavior because they are in line with my own personal experiences.  I don't discount those who posted pre-game about their negative experiences, but I think the posts today reinforce my perception that those with negative personal experiences as an opposing fan at previous Marshall games represent a distinct -- if somewhat vocal -- minority.

Hope everyone that came to the game had a good time and were treated very well.  Your Bobcats are a helluva team, your coach even better.  Had the privilege of talking w/ several OU fans about town/in restaurants and your team was well represented, knowledgeable fans and good people.  The best team won, and love the style/discipline your team plays with.  GL the rest of the way, will be rooting for OU to win out!  Great game, both teams  played very well, your D and Tettleton were just too much for the Herd, again.  Win the MAC and more Bobcats, you're loaded and ready.

"Here, kitty, kitty" sounds kind of clever to me.   It's at least on par with "Stupid Cow".

I was in section 124 surrounded by kelley green and was pretty vocal in cheering the cats on. I was pleasantly surprised that even when I was at my loudest (TD Pass on 4th and 5!) most of the Marshall fans looked at me with respect, as if they were happy I was happy. In fact, after the game several people came up to me and said "You guys have a really good team, I wish you luck this season." It was definitely a great experience and one of the best games I've been a part of in person. No complaints here.

Excellent.  We were pretty obnoxious in our section but the Herd fans didn't do anything beyond playful bickering.  After the game a guy took the time to talk to my friends and I.  Extremely nice.  Also, the atmosphere in that stadium was amazing.  Better than at Michigan or OSU.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Terrific.  Every Marshall fan we ran into we stopped and chatted with after a moment of smack at the most.  Very respectful, very polite, very funny people.  No complaints from me.

And the Optimist was right about the atmosphere.  I'd love to see Peden get to have the coherence that Marshall's has (other than the "thunderclap" after points; it fell apart after 14 points.)

This may sound a little weird to say, but it could actually be true:  Maybe they actually want us to be good?  For a long time, we've all heard the talk from Marshall fans wondering why Ohio isn't a better team, how the fans don't support the team if they're any good, etc.  In terms of fan base, the two schools are way more similar than either of us would probably like to admit.  It makes for a much better rivalry.  Obviously Miami will always be our top rival, but they've been pretty crappy for the last several years.  Those games have lost a bit of its luster.  The Marshall / Ohio rivalry has always been good, but Marshall has consistently been a better football school for a longer period of time.  OUr program has been gaining a lot of steam over the last few years, which will only make for a better rivalry as we move forward.

Actually Ohio leads the series 31-19-6, but Marshall was definitely better for most the last 40 years, during most of which Ohio was not very good. The two programs are at a comparable level at the moment, so there should be many more hard-fought games in the future.

They have been better last 25 yes but not last 40. That goes back to late 70's and early 80's and Marshall was not that good.

I will tell you this. Ohio has been better the last 2 years! ;)

When the hell did OUr fans not support us when we we're doin good?

I don't condone but I understand any fan not rooting for us when we sucked so bad.

No fan never offered non-support when we succeeded.

Only the true fans stayed when we sucked.

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the foam things being given out at the gates? I thought they were purporting them to be Thunder Sticks but they made no noise when banged together. Didn't really see them being waved during the game so I guess they were just souvenirs.

I had no issues. There wasn't the over-the-top niceness that big programs show you ( I think those fans assume their teams are going to win by 30 so they act nice to you...Tennesse fans all but offered to wash my car for me) but everyone was cordial. The sound "density" is really good there. It builds and sounds much louder than a 35K seat stadium. Plus, a Chamber of Commerce day of weather didn't hurt.

We were treated so well, my wife, Hooligan and I were placed on the front page of the Huntington Herald Dispatch this morning. We had a nice trip with our families.

I`m glad everyone had a good time and I also want to thank everyone for coming down to the game and helping to contribute to an awesome stmosphere. All the Bobcat fans I chatted with were pretty kewl and the four young men the wife and I talked to in the will call line were very nice young men. I think a couple said they were here on Bobcat attack. Good luck the rest of the season and it would be sweet to see you guys run the table 12-0.

I had a great time in Huntington and Proctorville. One of my roommates from college is now a Huntington Metro area resident and we stayed with him. We were a little late getting down town and so had a hurried dinner at Roosters (where our waitress was quite happy that the game wasn't televised, as it assured her a non-insane end to her shift). Had nothing but good experiences in and around the stadium.

I DID try to limit my standing, as there was an elderly OHIO fan sitting behind me, but he assured me that he could stand up for the big plays and that I should feel free to do so as well.

An unexpected bonus to our seats: the OHIO Women's Basketball team was sitting a few rows in front of us, and not only were most of them REALLY cute, but they were cheering their heads off for most of the game. For those of you that line in/around Athens, if their in-game involvement and cheering and shouting and school spirit and singing Stand up and cheer isn't enough of a reason to go support them this winter, just know that they're easy on the eyes too.

(I'd appologize for the objectifying comment, but its an internet sports message board, and they really did seem like great fans)
