this weekend and looking for:

Cincinnati over Louisville
Kent State over Rutgers

That should ensure we move ahead of all Big East teams in the BCS rankings and one step closer to a BCS bid.

Then I would like:

Nebraska over Michigan
Michigan State over Wisconsin

These things happen and all we would need is top16.

There is only one scoreboard that matters this weekend, and it's in Oxford.

I get the cliche!  Luckily, I am a fan and not a player and can look at and talk about every scoreboard.

Voice of Reason. Really not cliche. The ditch is right over there. The team has really not put any distance between.  The talk about BCS bowls is presumptuous.  The team has been taking steps up year after year and the big one this year is the MAC Championsip.  After that who knows.  JMHO, to date, this team has done nothing to rate BCS bowl discusion. Now check me in five weeks, if they continue winning, I will be leading the parade.

We're not playing. We can scoreboard watch.

Penn State over Ohio State would give us a huge bump in the computers.  Purdue's choke job may prove to be the biggest thing to ever happen at Ohio State.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I can't reiterate this point enough.  Anyone who thinks that as fans it matters what scoreboard we focus on is totally insane and needs to get off their high horse.

It doesn't matter if I focus on "the ditch" when I'm not driving the car. In fact, I am free to look at all the beautiful surroundings and have all my trust in the driver to be paying attention to staying on the road.

I don't view it so much a matter of affecting the outcome of the game as it is a matter of controling my own expectations and level of trashtalking/depression, depending on outcome.

EDIT: Anyone else is free to scoreboard watch/hypothesize as much as they like, I'm just explaining why I personally do not like to do so (not that it really stops me)

Thank you, JSF and DG!  If I were with the team I would certainly be saying there is only one scoreboard that matters.  However, I am on a FAN board.  I believe it is actually a requirement for me to scoreboard watch when it may or, and it is very well possible, may not end up mattering.  What kind of fan are you if you don't conjure up dream scenarios in which everything plays out the way you need it to and your team ends up in the BCS or National Championship hunt.  Dream a little people.  I promise you it won't have any shred of impact on the outcome of our game or any other game.

No kidding! Any talk about any bowl is presumptuous.  Also, I am very pro you are entitled to your opinion, but in this case your opinion is wrong.  This team has done A LOT to warrant BCS bowl discussion.  Here are a few of those things...

1. Beat Penn State in Happy Valley (and in case he have not noticed Penn State is putting a pretty darn good season together.)
2. Beat New Mexico State
3. Beat Marshall
4. Beat Norfolk State
5. Beat UMass
6. Beat Buffalo
7. Beat Akron
8. Ranked in the Top 25 of the AP Poll
9. Ranked in the Top 25 of the AP Poll, Coaches Poll and BCS
10. Ranked 2 spots behind Michigan and 1 spot ahead of Wisconsin (Jump Michigan and Boise and make it to Top 16, completely realistic given remaining schedule, and you are in a BCS bowl.  Also, the Big East could open a door at some point too.)

There are certainly a lot of things left to do for this to happen, but the conversation is more than warranted!  I am a fan. This is what fans do. I am going to continue to do it. If you don't want to do it, don't read it!

And to poke the Bear some more, I see a scenario of MAC Championship (Regular and Post Season) and Final Four in Men's Hoops.  Of course, the only score that really matters is Mercyhurst.  Or can I look ahead to Portland?

I respect this!  Trust me, I have been let down in a big way because I get my hopes up.  I am ok with it though.

I respect it too, although I find I am much happier riding the ups then coasting through occasional disappointment with the hopes of more good to come.

Spoken like a true Ohio resident though not wanting to get excited for the expectation of eventual disappointment. haha

Thank you for noting this. I've never seen a fan board with so many "fans" who feel they MUST tamper down everyone's excitement with every post. I think the next post I make I will preface with a subject line like "Do Not Read If You Feel You Must Temper Your Expectations."

Jeeze. Let a guy dream a little bit, please?

If we are not suppose to scoreboard watch, how come at the Panther game yesterday they kept updating NFL scores with a focus on the New Orleans Tampa game (not that the Panthers are going anywhere).

Come Saturday, there are only two teams in the country whose fans can ignore the scores of all other games - Alabama and Florida.

Personally, I think if we win out (including MACC) we get a BCS ranking higher than 16 and ahead the Big Ten/Big East.

I'm hoping it happens, but realize that every game is here out is both winnable and losable.

But if I'm dreaming and scoreboard watching:

1) OHIO goes undefeated
2) Nebraska wins the Big Ten
3) Oregon wins Pac-12 and makes National Championship Game
4) Rose Bowl uses Pac-12 opening to invite Ohio to play Nebraska

...That would be a Hollywood Story!

P.S. Ed Harris would make a good Frank Solich in the movie! :)

On the surface, that is true. The only problem is that one is being naive if they think no one from the team reads this, and also if they think that the same distractions aren't affecting the players. Even if they don't read this, they will probably hear these things around campus, too.

Your ditch analogy reminds me of a time when I was driving in the mountains of Colorado, up to a high mountain pass on a dirt road with no railings. I wasn't driving, and I was looking at the incredible view, and I said "Wow. Would you look at that amazing view!", which I immediately followed with "NO! Don't look at the view!" The problem is that distractions affect everyone, and the more people are looking at the view, the more tempted the driver is to take a peek, too, which could lead to potentially disasterous results.

You mean to tell me that these players will read into the comments of (mostly) nameless message board posters over a man who has coached at THE highest level of college football and has resurrected one of the worst D-1 football programs in the nation?

The players are smart enough to take our comments with a grain of salt.  If they're looking past an opponent, I promise you it wasn't because they read Bobcatattack.

Far be it for me to tell anyone what they can or can't talk or think about. I was just reminding people that the thoughts and ideas expressed here are not just found here, but all over campus.

Yes, the coaches are continually reminding the players not to look ahead, but they have hopes and dreams, too, and they aren't immune to these thoughts. No coach ever fails to remind their players not to look ahead, yet time and time again it happens.

Other than at Oxford, the most important scoreboards include MAC schools.  The probability of Ohio winning out is still small and a better shot at a MAC East Title if certain teams lose is probably a lot more important in the long run than what happens elsewhere.
